The F-35 beat it senseless in a back alley a few years ago. It got too jealous about how happy it was, and needed to make it "Disappear".

Couldn't VTOL with a load. Couldn't go supersonic.

Boeing showed up with a delta wing harrier replacement that was half down. Air force wanted a smaller cheaper f-22 and Lockheed provided.

Boeing tried to sell and ugly plane to the fighter mafia, duh.
>>
-AF brass is all ex pilots
-Pilots dont like stupid looking planes
- Lockheed's prototype was miles ahead of Boeing's, mainly because they went more conventional
-The 35 was already doing full on flight testing, launching ordnance, etc, while the 32 could barely fucking fly without shit breaking.

It just got beat, and like a red headed stepchild, at that.

Boeing tried to use a fancy carbon fibre manufacturing process to make a ginormous single piece wing that stretched across the back of the plane.

Which snapped in half just before the contest was due to begin - the soviets had a similar idea in making the structural peices of the wings of their super-sonic passenger plane out of long peices of metal rather than lots of little ones, which would make the wings cheaper to manufacture in theory. In practice what happens is that any defects in the wing will now spread through the entire wing, rather than just through one small peice of it, which is catastrophic if it happens in mid-flight, and means the ENTIRE wing has to be replaced if caught during maintenance.

Carbon fibre in general tends to require a single peice construction and suffers that crucial problem that multi-peice metal parts don't - unlike the soviet thing though there's also a significant decrease in the weight of the peices involve if you use carbon fibre, so it's ALMOST a good idea. Really aerospace manufacturers need to figure out how to make smaller bits of wings and tails out of carbon fibre that can then be fixed into place without structural weakening or decreasing the weight saving, and allow it so that those peices can be swapped out if defects occur rather than going with single large peices.

Boeing then tried to improvise a shitty and more conventional multiple-peice wing+tail setup to replace the broken wing, but that left the stealthy cover on the swivel nozzle unable to open up so it could switch betwen VTOL and level flight without a bunch of engineers taking off part of the wings and then replacing it. So it couldn't switch between VTOL and level flight MID flight, which was part of the contest's criteria.

also at edwards the two teams of maintainers were on totally differnet tiers. The Boeing guys left tools in the fucking cockpit for the pilots to find, and the jet was pretty half baked.

To be fair, lockheed also had the same idea of a giant piece of skin, but it had to be stored in specific conditions or it would warp. it always warped. however lockheed already had a back up plan that involved more panels and more LO coating. STEALTH CAULK.

Main difference between Boeing and Lockheed is that LM started to do preliminary development about decade before Boeing.
>>
>>23230160
It's the other way around. The X-35 lift-fan was more radical than the X-32's lift system which is little different than the harrier's.

Boeing leadership have always been arrogant and greatly exaggerate their decision making capabilities. It's why they have to acquire to grow and struggle so much. Too much political space vs real space.
>>
>>23238427

Boeing leadership has done lots of short term profits over long term development decisions in last couple decades. Huge amount of gutting own newly bought assets and outsourcing as much as possible to overseas subcontractors on every civilian product.

Military contracts are too politicized for that to be possible.

actually boeing had a major re-evaluation of their design half way through the competition, but since they were so far along on the prototype they couldn't just scrap it because they wouldn't have the time, money, or resources to build a new one of their better design.

I meant the wings and tail , and overall layout. Lockheed went the traditional route. Boeing Went with the crazy single piece delta wing and angled tail thingys, which were not as good for the requirements.

>The X-35 lift-fan was more radical than the X-32's lift system which is little different than the harrier's.

Yeah, but the 32's system sucked. The harrier's sytem sucks for that matter, its just that it works. The 32 couldnt even attain that level of performance though.

There is a good documentary on this competition, watch it. Thats where I learned all I know about this. Like I said, the 35 was doing full on flight testing, while at the same time the 35 wasnt/was barely flight worthy.

Side note, Ive seen the X-32 in person, it looks MUCH better IRL, especially from the back. Will post a pic in a sec.
