What would be a good idea for babby's first melee weapon? Preferably something with a gentle learning curve?

Find a good HEMA or SCA group near you and use whatever they use.

If they're a HEMA group specialising in longsword, learn that.
If they're an SCA group with a few whitebelts using swords and centre-grip shields, learn how to use that.

You'll do much better learning how to use a harder style from experts than you will trying to learn an easy style by yourself.

I want to see some sparring with a kopesh
>>
>>23180742
I've got a friend in the SCA who made a khopesh.
I've only fought against it once, but it really strange - completely different to other swords.
>>
>>23180821
what kind of shield was it and how accurate of a model?
>>
>>23181100
Well he wasn't using a shield, because he originally made the khopesh for a "single weapon only" tournament and he was just practicing for it.

I was just using a heater shield because it's what I normally use.

As for the accuracy, it was pretty much the right shape, but the curvature of the concave section was a bit deeper than you'd expect and it was a few inches shorter. It also didn't have the strongly-defined "hook" points at the first bend and the tip.
The accuracy of it probably didn't make much of a difference though, because it was the first time he'd ever used it.
>>
>>23181144
A kopesh is a really small weapon to use without a shield. That leaves you really open to attacks from longer weapons. I think if he had made it a few inches shorter it would have been too small and would have been like a dagger rather than a sword.
>>
>>23181771
Dagger in size not shape. Reproductions of what I've seen are relatively small
>>
>>23181771
It did definitely feel like I was fighting against a strangely-shaped dagger.

It definitely was more like being shanked than stabbed.
>>
>>23177980
Join a HEMA group near you. They usually have their curriculum centered around longswords but some use poleaxes in the French style.
>>
>>23181965
Well it was a bronze weapon so it couldn't be too long and the ore weapons it went against would have been a spear axe or another kopesh. Along with a large shield of stretched oxhide
>>
>>23182005
*only if they're good.
Bad HEMA groups are worse than karate McDojos.

How did your friend make his kopesh? I've been looking at making one, and beyond clamping down a stick of rattan for a year to get decent curvature, I need to figure out how to make o e and get it sturdy enough for heavy combat.
>>
>>23183253
Well I've seen a bronze one bought from Neil burrage. I assume to make one out of wood I would steam it until it it was able to be bent like how the Egyptians bent wood for chariot wheels.

Anyway, I guess since sword and boards are asleep, post polearms.

If you have poles in your line who know what they are doing, you will definitely tear the other team a bigger one than they can you if they have none.

I throw mostly stabs with mine when I'm in a line, but I'll also break shields or snipe an armored limb with a red shot here and there. When I'm running around open field I throw a lot more reds.

>>
>>23183686

Yeah, my unit tries not to get bogged down in line fights. We play the shock infantry role in most scenarios. At Rag we're the ones that blew a hole on Romes lines during the battle of Helms Deep. Not gonna hand out a name, but if you figure out who we are so be it, gonna assume you won't fuck with us.

We try to only have one or two poles per lance, most of the time we need the sword and boards to take up space more than an extra glaive.

Imagine the dozens of craftsmen it took to make that thing.

Miners, foundrymen, jewelers, bladesmiths, fitters, etc etc etc. Buying something that high-quality would have cost probably about the cost of a large freighter ship, these days. Makes sense it was owned by royalty; it was probably given as a gift.

That's actually a dagger they found buried in one of the pits surrounding his tomb along with the terracotta soldiers. There was something like 200,000 people total working on his tomb and making the things to put in it before he died so you're right, a lot of people probably worked their ass off to make that dagger.
>>
So, what kind of helmet do you guys recommend for me if I ever manage to afford a set of gothic plate?

I don't like bascinets, sallets, barbutes, or armets.
>>
>>23184087

That more or less leaves you with the greathelm, which could lead to you being beheaded, unless you have good chain on your neck, in which case they will just snap your neck with a heavy handed sword swing.
>>
>>23184152
that's what a good gorget is for, even if only to be a neck brace and prevent you from whipping your head back too hard.
>>
>>23184206

>I don't like bascinets, sallets, barbutes, or armets.

really depends on what date, and where.

for example, pre-1500, there is virtually no reference anywhere, worldwide, of gothic harness with an armet. It just wasnt done.

I assume its for shits and giggles, not for active use in jousting. Therefore my only remaining suggestion which is really practical is a kettle helm and bevor with falling buffe, in which case you're going from Gothic More towards flemish-italian Alla Tedesca type gothic armour than german Gothic, which is in turn a very different style of decoration to the besegaws, and the fine details of fluting.

Chris Dobson has done some research papers on the subject, I recall.
