get a knife, lose the axe.

You sleeping on the forrest ground?
get a sleeping bag/tent.

Getting a tent from my grandpappy when he visits in a week. Until I get some more money, the tiny flashlight on my shotgun will have to do, along with the knife. I'll get a pack of lighters to add to the kit as well. Appreciate it.

A question, what's a good brand of knife? Preferably full tang.

Wool, throw in a few basic ones that you can wear while your wool ones dry off.

I'm building a little kit. I'm going to try bicycling into the woods and seeing if that's a viable option.

I've got an H&R Tamer in 20ga, which breaks down nice and small.
Also got my hatchet, my Mora knife, a ferrocerium rod, an 8x10 tarp, a pocketfull of cordage, and my aluminum canteen and cup.

That's generally all that I carry. I've spent enough time living in the woods to manage fine for days off this loadout.

Op. You have a good start. Get a sling for your shot gun, at least 2 days worth of comfortable clothes you can hike in. A metal water bottle, metal so you can boil creek water.get one of them space blankets, a tarp. Peanut butter and tuna packs. Multi tool, and a Cresent wrench...all that stuff can be had fairly cheep. Hat and gloves, bug spray depending on season. And lastly read a few books. Knowledge is the absolute best thing you can take innawoods
>>

Okay, but if you make civilization then how do you make other means of lighting fires? Find flint laying on the ground somewhere?

How can I make matches? Manufacture napatha with nothing but my dick and a couple chopped down trees? How about pressurized butane? Those are the modern methods of firestarting, after all.

I'd have to be able to get flint somehow

A small hand crank generator, a bit of tungsten, and a flyback transformer would make an electric arc capable of starting tinder. The tungsten arc nodes would be good for thousands of hours of continuous operation, but you'd only need a few seconds per light. You could use it all your life and hand it down to children and grandchildren if the entire assembly was of good quality and weatherproofed.

Thanks.

I'm already carrying around 5-10 spare shells, why not have one more loaded? I'd be way less than an ounce of tubing and spring to make it happen. Plus it increases the utility when using the shotgun for fun.

Please give a valid counter-argument or don't reply. Calling people names makes you look like an ass, and tripping means that image is going to follow you.
>>
>>22973790
For many years, the standard has been 5+1

That's what hunters have liked

I'm not saying you can't, I'm saying that's the justification

Again, the only people who want the extra shell are tacticools

>>
>>22973843

So if my HD shotgun happens to have an 18" barrel, contain 7 in the tube, one on the lifter, and one in the chamber, I'm a "tacticool?" You don't think it's prudent to minimize the chances of having to reload, given how abysmally slow that is for people who aren't 3-gunners?

There are these pretty nice blank firing revolvers made out of pot metal. They are nicer than ever jennings. They use .380 diameter blanks.

I'm a machinist, and I was thinking about buying a few and making chamber sleeves for them so that they'll take .25 acp.

Does anyone think that would work? I could effectively make reliable 6 shot revolvers for less than $75 a piece.

I think they would make great barter items or be good for a cache.

The chamber sleeves would allow for about a .120 thick steel chamber + the cylinder.

.25 acp is also relatively week. I could even make new hammers and maybe a reinforcing plate if needed.
>>
>>22974041

Fair enough, and I agree. If I were buying a Mossberg, it'd be the 590 -- the ghost rings and the capacity are worth it to me, since shooting slugs at stuff entertains the shit out of me and for HD purposes I think it's prudent to minimize my chances of reloading.

Had you just said that, and not called anybody who may have a good reason for wanting more rounds on the gun a dipshit, nobody would have jumped on you and you wouldn't have to pretend you're being misunderstood.

Yeah no, you aren't getting away with that. Consider your audience: Is anyone here likely to take being called tacticool-anything personally? I'd hope close to 100% would, considering legitimate tacticool is the cancer that is killing taste in modern arms.

Seriously though, if you have something that's not a handgun or food/water gear and it only has one use, ditch it. Everything you carry should be multipurpose, things with an innumerable amount of uses are best
>replace the 1st aid kit with one meant for trauma, not scraped knees and bee stings

Get yourself a LifeStraw or something sometime too. Those water purification tablets kill off most stuff but they taste like shit and they're only meant to be used supplementary to normal purified water.

In what way? If it doesn't have more accessories than gun, then you're probably safe. Tacticool comes from the idea that having more shit hanging off your gun somehow makes it more effective when oper8tin' operationally. Roughly-
Food
Water
Shelter
Medical
Security
Hygiene

Those are your categories. Sleeping gear and spare clothes go in the shelter category. You want multipurpose items that can work in more than 1 category. Example: trash bags can be used for all manner of shelter-related things. They can also be used to transport, store, and treat water. Bam! Multi function.

Lurk this and all the other BOB threads to get an idea of the basics you want in each category. Tailor your loadout to your situation.

Lose the alcohol, replace with vodka or everclear. Lose the hatchet, replace with an Estwing roofing hatchet. Strip the first aid kit down to a boo boo kit, add more bandaids and medical tape. And a tube of Neosporin. Then get some basic supplies for dealing with trauma- ace wraps, kerlix, tourniquets, and so on. Avoid quikclot unless you've had the training. Add benadryl, pseudoephedrine HCL, immodium, pepcid, sunscreen, chapstick, tweezers, scissors, forceps, a magnifying glass, and a small very sharp blade.

Add peanut butter and honey. About 20 hard candies. Some tuna or chicken packs. Basic mess gear, at the very least something to boil water in.

Add water carrying capacity until you have at least 3 liters worth, in 2 or 3 separate containers. A gallon of capacity is better. Water purification and filtration equipment and supplies.

A half dozen contractor trash bags and some duct tape. TP and baby wipes. DEET. Nylon twine. Flashlight and headlamp that share a battery size. A normal, easily found battery size. None of this special snowflake lithium battery shit. Then get rechargeable batteries and a solar charger. Download a topo map app to your smartphone. Get a crankradio with a light and usb port for charging stuff. Spaceblanket. Socks and underwear, 4 and 2 sets respectively.

Have been posting this in a handful of threads, gathering opinions on some issues.

1. Would a 10.5-12.5" barrel for 556 be suitable for an urban conflict?

2. What's the maximum effective range of such a barrel?

3. Taking into consideration that fragmentation is lost around 50-70m, could an enemy combatant still drop at 300m? 200m?

4. Would you feel confident in engaging one other person who is also actively trying to kill you at 200m with an 10-12" barrel length?

5. Is there a muzzle device that can be added to an SBR that would increase its effectiveness at longer engagements, essentially mimicking a longer barrel?

Thank you, /k/, for everything.

I'd love a 12.5" AR upper, but when you lose the usefulness of the 5.56 (its explosive fragmentation) why even use it?
Personally, I think a 7.62x39 PDW would be optimal for CQC (or 300 Blackout), and leave the 5.56 to close-mid (DMR nigga).

I stated that the knives were overkill. Basically I keep my lmfII in my go bag and my SOG in my car.. I swap out the folders daily. Pretty much I'll pick up whatever two are available at any given notice. The trauma kit I have now is just the Israeli, and the tourniquet. I will get better rope too. I've also been looking to buy some wool socks. Thanks anon.

I have a plastic jar 3/4 full of this and a small package of steak jerky stuffed into it that rides under my back seat. This combo is my go-to pack food for any sort of adventure.
>>
The things you indefinitely need to survive are food, water, shelter, and protection. How much water and food needs to be in your bag depends on where you live and what your exact plans are. What kind of shelter and weapons you need is also dependent on you location and plans. Some places, you're not going to make it to safety with a big pack full of gear and a nice rifle, you'll be shot by tyrone and his friends while trying to escape the city. Some places you'll need to move on foot to a more secluded or safe area. Then, you would be wise to be well prepared and armed, as you'll be the only target of anyone who you cross paths with. No bug out bag is universal.

>>
>>22989184

lolno. Sugar is added and it's dried to prevent bacterial growth because it makes for a very hypertonic outside environment. That's the same reason why salting things prevents bacterial growth. It still has nutrition.

Why? Shotguns, combat rifles, fudd rifles, and .22s are all better choices

>Firestarting kit in small tin can
>Canned Kipper/Sardines/Herring
>Gold Bond/Baby powder
>Salt rehydration package

Thats everything, anon! Obviously, as stated before, I will not be taking all the knives and the shelters are whats on hand. My car is also set up for survival and these supplies often swap between my bag and my car at any given time. Thus, you'll notice some redundancy. Any other Questions?

if you've ever used one of those magnesium ferro rod combos, you'd know they wont last for years either. The magnesium might last a while but no matter if its U.S. milsurp or cheap chiniese trash the ferro rods wear out all too soon and youre just left with a chewed up un-ignitable block of magnesium to shove up your ass. Better to just carry a decent sized ferro rod and learn how to find tinder in any environment.

That's the reduced load out. Salt Shakers because you can keep a lot of salt in one and not have to worry about it. I tried paper packets but they just got messy after awhile. The pack is meant for long term sustainability. Everything food wise I can last a week on, two if I ration but if I supplement it with foraged plants and hunted game I can last a few months. I tried out a bunch of configurations last year and this is the one I came up with that works the best for all scenarios I can think of.

Yeah I am going to feel but I ain't gonna love it. I do want more Capn Jack though, I can't get enough of him.

First loadout was around 90 pounds. Second was 70, third was 60 and finally I just dropped the SKS and used the Trifecta because three guns in one. I took it camping for a week back in August and it worked just fine. But then again I did not do any long distance hiking with it, I only went in a couple miles before making a camp.
>>
A lot of people don't seem to have good concepts with their kits. They're all over the place. You're trying to achieve one of two things: light kit, where being 'innawoods' is a temporary thing lasting a week or two at most (short-term survival kit); or else long-term kit, where you're building a base isolated from everything else because everything else has gone to complete and utter shit. These are completely different concepts. In the former option, the emphasis should be on water, then food, then medicine, and then security, and comfort, hygiene, shelter and the rest follow down from that. This means carrying bottled water (in a camelbak for instance), dehydrated food, a sleeping bag, a few layers of clothing (which one can quickly peel and regain as needed), and a basic trauma kit. The overall pack doesn't need to be terribly heavy, nor should it; the emphasis is on mobility, since you're likely trying to outrun something, and hauling ass with a 15kg pack is easier than a 40kg pack. What you're not likely doing is carrying around kit for catching food or purifying water. Maybe a purifying straw and a few iodine tablets is smart as a backup in case your some of your bottles are punctured, but you don't want to weigh yourself down with kit that you probably won't need.

A long-term kit means you're going to need to carry around a either hatchet or machete or both (depends on what level of redundancy you want), more water purification, more ammunition for hunting, more fire starting material, proper bedding and the like. The implication of this sort of kit is that you carry it to a staging point, set it up, and leave the bulkiest items stationary while you lug around just your water, food, a few layers of clothes, blades/relevant tools, ammunition, and weaponry during daily activities until you have to relocate. Using this bag means some serious shit has gone down - you're not going back into the city/suburbs for more than scavenging supplies for weeks or months.

Most of the time I'm in the desert and it gets really god damned cold at night in the winter but if you build a good dakota pit fire and keep it hot to cook on then you bury it and put your hammock low over it with a couple wool blankets the radiant heat coming up keeps me warm enough for even frost covered nights.

They work brilliantly. You want to get water only mix and then make them up in the mess kit pan and put the lid on then put in the coals for about twenty minutes with coals on the bottom and coals on the top. After twenty minutes you have a cake. Nothing lifts your spirits in the woods like a chocolate chip cake.

I bought a rainbow one off ebay because it was cheap and nylon. I removed the spreader bars and its worked great for the past couple years. Comfortable and big enough for me and my SKS.

OP youre better prepared than about 80% of the worlds population.
dont come here to expect a rational debate between the guys who are trying to squeeze themselves in and others out of the top 1% of BOB builders

you can fix this by going through your cabinets at your house right now
>rice, easy to cook pasta add water shit, tuna and chicken packets, fast food condiment packets
>multitool, knife, mess kit, canteen/water system
>candles, batteries, blanket, headlamp/flashlight, gloves,
>some kinda land nav, zip ties and duct tape

and my personal suggestion that no one seems to have ever posted about on any forum I've seen
>Sidewalk chalk

>>
>>22998147

The mind needs a challenge, and this type of material will do this especially when you try to break it down and analysis it. Having mental workouts like that and being able to think critically can be more valuable than learning about survival tactics especially if you're well seasoned. Not to say that I am extremely seasoned or educational on wildlife and plants, but enough to where if I need to bug out for a week or two I'm not going to die. Poetry also is a form of art.. And art is what gives us our humanity. Without these types of readings we would completely lose ourselves in the barren wasteland or ruins that we may one day find ourselves in.
>>
>>22998361
I hear you bro. I would strongly consider a smaller paperback book/books. Unless you have a problem with smaller font, you won't have to sacrifice length for physical size.

Not saying I agree with it, but some people can't handle a lack of creature comforts and variety. Necessity will either breed compliance or death..

Yeah, I understand. I'll have to find some lighter, more compact books. Its just what I had in my library that I threw in there. I have a bunch of other decent reading material too. Thanks man

I just keep this shit in my trunk anyways so I'm a rank amateur for not having ammo caches buried at sporadic GPS coordinate sites along the way to my bunker.

this is the most I will invest into it
3 days - most likely, powers out, at worst looting and hysteria, water cut off, fires from gas lines, traffics completely fucked in all directions
3 weeks - SHIT HAS GONE DOWN, gubberment capacity has stretched itself to its max, you and youre neighbors might start pointing guns at people, hoarding and panic sets in, most or all of societal safety nets are gone and people are feeling it.
3 months - whelp, looks like /k/ was right after all, time to pledge myself to the glorious NorthWesternFront or get in line for my fema tickets to disneyworld.

I think your timetables are a bit premature (and you appear butthurt).
A few years ago I was living in RI and my town got railed by a hurricane. I was without power for a whole week. There was no chaos, just frustrated people. The downed trees were steadily cleared, the basements pumped, and I actually enjoyed how pitch black some of the neighborhoods got at night.
Have a bit more perspective, friend.

They're probably won't be any large game left, but your forgetting the fact that over half the population is old with medical issues
>dead in a week
And 1/3 are infants and children
>dead in a month
And don't forget the city populations who will eat themselves to death in a month.

No. They're will be surplus. You'll just have to take it.

Not sure if this thread is about to keel over, but I had two more questions:
1. Where's the maps at? And on the subject, any particular vendor to check out?
2. Anyone fish? I never have, and would like to learn. Are there poles capable of being taken apart, yet maintain durability in use? I usually see people only pack line and lure..whats the deal? Hunting deer and shit sounds fun and all, but there's an abundance of fish around my neck of the woods..
>>
>>22998832
oh yeah totally agree with you man. I just mean as in you having to use items or actually buggin out.
I mean as in worst case of a bad situation most likely chimp out or crazy panic before the nat guard comes in holds shit down.

As far as maps go, I use a handheld Garmin gos specific to hiking. Downloaded a map for a 20 mile radius of the forest preserve near my house.

As far as fishing goes, yes.. They have very nice collapsable poles. People only pack line + hooks and shit because its a space saver and you can use a stick as a hobo rod. They have very small ones at Walmart for children that would fit easily on the outside of a hiking bag along with full size ones that break down into pieces. They may not be as durable, but fuck.. As long as you catch something then it shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>22999062
And this, anon, is why we bug the fuck out. No way I'm going to a govt shelter like that. I'll happily live in the woods away from disease, theft, and rape while sleeping soundly under the stars eating my dried fruit, and canned fish.
>>
>>22999112
Do you have a means of charging the garmin? Also, I'm preparing for multiple scenarios, and I think having at least one competent backup map would be a good idea.
>>
>>22999230
No, I Dont. But if used sparingly it will last weeks. It is also water and shock proof. I've used mine multiple times, in Guatemala, and mexico. Both a year apart, without changing batteries. Also, it wouldn't be difficult to find or pack extra batteries
>>
>>22999276
I'm going to look into that...I'd like to know if purchasing a couple spare batteries is viable, and whether some sort of solar/crank charger is compatible. Seems like someone could make a fair amount of coin given a garmin's application and user base.
>>
>>22999356
Absolutely. Especially when it comes to marking safe places, bunkers, and places you've hid supplies. But as you said before, go ahead and buy a physical map as a back up. You can never have enough back ups.

that's a pretty good kit. I like the paracord. Consider getting a big spool of braided fishing line, around 30 pound test or so. It's like paracord's equally useful little brother, great for tying stuff, and a big roll will last you forever.
>>
>>22996750
One piece steel indestructable piece of just fucking awesomeness. Got mine free from a construction site trash heap.
>>
>>22997504
I'm in a pretty mild climate. I have a fleece Kelty bag liner, then if necessary I can bivy sack over that with a couple of trash bags. If it's really cold, I 've got a 4'X12' space blanket that can become a really crinkly bivy shelter. Plus more trash bags that can be stuffed with marsh grass or newspaper to make a ground pad. Hobo basic, it'll work for my area.

Ramen noodles in an MRE?

MRE stands for Meal Ready to Eat. Ramen noodles are not "ready to eat" out of the package unless you are reeeeealy hungry, as I have found out. For any bugout food, I want something I can eat on the run.

Just found pic related at Walmart. 2 packs of noodles precooked, just heat up (or not). 320 calories per pack.
>>
>>23000914
>inb4 anon claiming you have to heat up some of the meals
I never wasted time heating shit up.
>>
>>23001077
Neither did I when I was in the field. It's an option but not necessary like with ramen.
>>
>>22998301
Hah! I've recommended and carry both chalk AND a big ass Sharpie. I'll have to dig because I might also have a silver Sharpie. Those are good for writing notes on things like hoods and windows. My bag is a GHB, otherwise I'm sure my silver Sharpie would be enough to displace you in the 1% lifeboat.

>>23001284
Its always best to maximize the amount of time you have to refuel...they gave us 11b's shit for time.
>>
>>22971542
I can almost see this as viable... Use a brush axe blade on a massive shaft and this might just be fedora enough to work... A walking stick that is also your main workhorse of a blade, giving it a lot of leverage.

You'll be dead before you hit the ground. No plate carrier, no Gen X NVGs, no Middle Earth camo, no milsurp AT ALL, your car probably outweighs your ammo, your selection of guns is laughably inadequate. I bet your bunker isn't even seismically reinforced.

Bro, do you even prep?

Mapwise, I have an app in my iPhone. It lets me download USGS topo maps and keep them available for offline use. I have some paper maps for backup.

Personally I don't do fishing. I'm on the west coast, fish in Humboldt Bay are already starting to show elevated Cesium levels. However, I do carry one sectional dome tent pole in my bag. One of the fiberglass ones, about 5 sections that shock cord together. Lots of uses there, I bet you could rig a fishing pole with it.

Different anon. Solar charger is your friend. Also look at getting a crank radio with a USB charging port. That would take a hellish amount of time.

>>

it's kinda a wink and a nod that manufacturers do for their resellers. if the manufacturer offered the lowest price always, then no reseller would bother to carry the items. but by marking up a bit at the "source" the consumer thinks that they're getting a great deal from the reseller. this way, the manufacturer gets to enjoy the wide distribution network and steady, large volume of demand that a large reseller provides
>>
>>23002274
I never knew it existed until you mentioned it. Right now I have a Radio Shack crank radio with USB port and flashlight function. It's kinda weighty and klunky. If this Eton dealy is more compact, it sounds like a better thing. The solar feature is a huge bonus. Just hope it's not a trendy gimmick aimed at the hipster crowd.
