If I wanted to do 3-5 day trips innawoods, how does the LK35 compare to an ALICE pack? The LK is about 20 bucks cheaper than the ALICE packs I've seen that come with frames, so I'm really tempted to pick one up.

Also, innawoods gear general?

Should I buy a knife, trench tool and ax or could I just buy a knife and one of those trench tools with the serrated edges? I'm not going to be chopping down trees or anything but it would be for taking off tree limbs and such. I figure I can split wood by bayoneting the knife.

This is not recommended, it ends with you breaking the knife and cutting your own femoral artery.

If your taking off limbs a trench tool, machete, tomahawk/ hatchet or kukri would work. An axe is probably a bit much to be carrying around.

The LK35 carries significantly less than an alice large and has worse organization than both. It also has lash points on the top and bottom which is more convenient for attaching a sleeping bag and ground cover, however the alice's huge robust compression straps allow you to strap a tent, a sleeping bag, a ground cover, three rifles, and a bear can easily, it's just more annoying to actually get things out of the pack once you do.

The LK35 is a bit more comfortable as long as you don't move your arms around a lot and get pinched by the frame.

Source, I have an alice large which is my main pack, and I have two LK35s which are my loaners.

No, especially if your state has legal year round coyote popping.

Here in WA I can bring my AR innawoods and if anyone asks I'm hunting coyotes. Coyotes exist in all of washington's bio areas so it works in every forest.

Check your state's open carry laws, WA allows full open carry which helps with this.

>A hunting license is not required to hunt the following:
>Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals or fowl.

>Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.

>Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation.

>Note: All laws and regulations governing hunter education requirements still apply.

So even if the fucking thing is running rampant and I see it doing damage, I legally still have to have completed the "hunter education program" to shoot it? what kind of liberal bullshit is this?

Fuck it , open carry for long rifles is legal, It's easier to just say I'm carrying it because I fucking can than even try to rationalize it with hunting given all that bullshit.

I identify this to be fact. This is why I have modeled my gear for two purposes. the first is gear to fight with and the second is to appear non-threatening. Anything in-between will require a massive compromise.

Can't appear inconspicuous with a rifle.
Can't stay hidden without camouflage.
Can't protect your body without armor.
Etc., etc.

>TFW a typical "greyman" will be wearing non-camouflaged clothing

it's more that the alice shoulder straps and kidney pads are shitty than the pack frame or pack themselves.
find a frame, pack, and molle ii shoulder straps/kidney pad and you can have an okay pack for ~50USD if you look around funshows and swap meets, much more than that and better stuff starts to be available to you around the same price point. if you can find a reasonable priced used commercial pack they will usually be lighter and more comfortable than milsurp but anytime you're buying used inspect it thoroughly. fwiw some militaries have started moving towards beefed up commercial packs in camouflage for their rucks, the ILBE would be one example of this, iirc it's a licensed Arcteryx Bora 90 or 95 in marpat made by propper. it's a good comfortable design but supposedly sucked to wear over armor whereas the old alice did not. go figure.

Yes it will, it isnt designed for that use.
> I have $13 Moras and $150 + Benchmades, ESEE's, DPX, ect and they're still going strong after years of use from building shelters, normal task, and bushcrafting.
And yet none of those normal knife tasks you listed are batoning.
>They're tools. You don't baby them.
Babying tools is not using them for their intended purpose. The intended purpose of a knife isnt splitting wood, it just isnt so dont try to say it is. That technique is to be used in emergencies only and even then it is to be used when you have two knives that way you arent dulling your only blade on wood.

>>
>>22767393
>Ok, Lumberjack. Not everyone carries around an AX.
Firstly it is axe and secondly if you plan on actually starting a fire for something other than a twig stove you should consider it. If 3 or less pounds is too much for you then why are you even outdoors?

Not much if you espouse batoning in any situation save survival with a spare knife. You are the hipster of the outdoors.

I own one and love it, here's a bit of copy pasta I saved from another thread on which is better

The insides are roughly the same with the LK being a bit deeper. While ALICE packs have the added modularity with the ALICE clip system and external pouches; the design of the kidney belt and straps leaves much to be desired. The frame also lacks attachment points, while the frame can be detached from the ruck to carry other items (with a cargo shelf bough separately) the LK35 has one built it with the pack deataching in seconds. In comparison the LK35 lacks kidney straps (later models have them) and its current straps are very minimal with less padding than ALICE straps but it makes up for this by having a unmatched build quality.

TL;DR LK35 is a blank pallet to build off of and it's idiot proof, ALICE packs suited for those who like to make additions yet the market for upgrades has already peaked

Both require some level of upgrading to be made comfortable and suitable for long term use

I own camp hatchets and axes. If I'm building a large shelter, Ill strap them to my pack and use it. But most the time I use a kukri that I won from a bug out contest from Cold Steel. (They actually make good machetes)
Less is more for me, so if I can have a good knife that can handle every aspect of cutting, then I'll use that.

I haven't gone out much, but theoretically the okanogan wilderness looks really cool. I've done some shooting trips in that forest occasionally since I was a kid.

I want the hunting license because I actually intend to take any coyote that I see, and then make Korean soup out of them when I make camp.

I've been preparing for a wilderness coyote hunt for a while now, almost got all the gear together.

It would make it a much simpler conversation with cops though.

I was camping recently and handled all the firewood chopping, cutting quartered pine/maple logs down to chopstick sized bits with a Estwing hatchet. They're cheap and they work but are heavy so something pricier will serve you even better. For wood processing you want a dedicated tool. Saw wise you shouldn't be cutting wood off of trees anyways, its green and wont burn well/ at all, Buy a folding pruning saw if you need to cut dead wood to length.

Kukris are the best tool for light delimbing, even small chainsaws got nothing on them.

Grey man doesn't apply to innawoods. In an actual SHTF situation you won't be trying to blend in with other people innawoods you'll just be avoiding them, and camo helps there.

Thats why I have "high profile" gear that is camo, and "low profile" gear that will blend in with other people, I can keep the high profile gear in the trunk of my car or something as I'm bugging out.

Get the special plastic alice frame, lighter and actually designed to work with molle straps.

I priced out a hellcat last week for 160 dollars with all new components except the actual straps which I can't find new, including a new camo alice med, all camo, and with the plastic frame.

I would build that but I already have an alice large and 2 swedes and I think I want a eberlestock G2

good but not lightweight by any means. comfortable and MODULAR*BUZZWORDâ„¢ but very heavy for what it is. you can find commercial bags rated below freezing that are very light for reasonable prices but if you can find a MSS for (much) cheaper than that and don't expect it to compliment your ultralight bag you won't be disappointed. do bear in mind you have to have the bivy, patrol bag and sleeping bag layered for it to meet the -40 rating it boasts and do compare to commercial bags on the market before you buy. milsurp tends to be cheap durable and heavy but never the best nor is it light.
>>
>>22768303
Under the lid or on the front either way.

I once had a sleeping bag, a ground cover, and a bear can lashed to the front of my Alice large.

Would it be reasonable to put a normal sized sleeping bag on the bottom and a ground cover on the top like a normal pack?

I still can't decide between a plastic frame alice medium hellcat in all woodland and a eberlestock G2 in multicam.

I like my alice large for it's capacity and organization, so if I got the G2 I would put molle pouches all over the outside in the same pattern that an ALICE's pockets are to replicate my current user experience. That would make it even more expensive vs the hellcat that is only 160.

But it also has built in hydration support and the rifle carrier. I don't know if I can bring myself to open carry in the woods without the rifle carrier to make me seem non threatening. Maybe I"m just a pussy and I need to just get my permit to hunt coyotes and use that as my excuse.

The rest of my stuff, fire starting kit, stove, water purifier, poncho with bungie cords, canteen with secondary stove and canteen cup, I would buy molle pouches for and put on the outside of the pack.

it's just a camo goretex bivy in the most basic sense. if you can sleep without the tent's illusion of shelter it's just like every other bivy that doesn't have a face piece / net shelter. iirc the whole set up is cut the the same pattern as a mummy bag, without draw strings on the bivy.
>>22768585
you can camp with just the bivy or not. the only reason you'd explicitly need anything more than a sleeping bag and maybe a tarp to stop rain is purely psychological. whether local fauna possibly getting cozy bothers you or not is on you and you alone.

What I do for more space on the outside is strap a fanny-pack to either side, straps are longs enough to weave through the frame and the plastic buckle make it easy to remove or move around.

fuck yes! all of my camping is in national forests!
>>22763194
>Do they give two shits what you bring?

depends on your state hunting laws. For instance, in my state, I can use the "coyote hunting" excuse to carry a rifle innawoods, but I have to be smart to the facts of:
>need to have a hunting license to hunt coyote even though there's no bag limit
>can't carry guns during deer gun seasons without deer permits

so make sure you verify that shit with your state hunting laws.

Also: national forests prohibit "target shooting"...you're only allowed to discharge firearms for hunting and defense.

>>

For what I paid for it (nothing), fucking excellent.
>green (light) bag is good to ~45 degrees
>black (thick) bag is good to ~30 degrees
>goretex bivvy bag is actually waterproof

I've not used it when it was cold enough to use both bags together, I've got a good 0deg North Face bag for that that's smaller/lighter than the 2 combined.

Gripes about it:
>the snaps are obnoxious and you WILL end up laying on at least some of them
>the zipper is fuckhuge and obnoxious and digs in if you lay on it
>the draft tube is vestigial on the black bag, the green bag doesn't have one: both bags leak air out the zipper like mad
>the bivvy bag has neither a full-cover hood nor mosquito netting so you still need at least some cover for your face

I've got two sets, both I was told to keep when the army switched to UCP (a woodland and a desert 3-pat one). I've also got a spare UCP bivvy bag I acquired by accident somewhere (literally digging through my gear and went WTF where'd this come from?).

I modded the woodland bivvy to include mosquito netting by chopping up an old Boy Scout mosquito net and sewing velcro to it and the bag. Works pretty good.

Eberlestock is one of the Top 3. It's the heaviest but most feature-rich.

In no specific order,
>Kitanica (ultralight featureless)
>eberlestock (heavyweight full-feature)
>Mystery Ranch (midweight, interesting innovations)

I've got a couple of their packs. I've got a McMillan (coyote tan), a Firefly (Realtree Max), and a Phantom (MC). They're heavy but have pockets everywhere and are made out of heavyweight cordura and good zippers.

For most people, I'd recommend going with Mystery Ranch. They're expensive but oh so worth it.

it's fine, but honestly far too large and bulky to carry for more than a few miles.

read the specs carefully. the temp ratings are for soldiers wearing their uniforms, boots, and for the low temperatures, several layers of winter clothing. you will not be able to sleep comfortably at the rated temperatures in your pajamas.

td,dr: get the kelty cosmic down 20 and save the money you would waste by putting the MSS in storage and buying a nicer bag down the line.

Muh nigga. I tend to keep all essential supplies in an outer bag (ie med kit, half shelter, light sleeping bag, spare fire supplies ect.) though I've never thought of a backpack to put in there, seems the run into >>22770964 's problem of 'if it can't fit in there you probably don't need it'
>>
>>22770539
Surely that waste's a huge amount of space with the straps and padding taking up so much space. I can see your reason for it, but are you really that likely to have to drop your ruck?

The ruck holds extra clothes/uniforms and a big medical bag. Also more food/water etc

>>22771026
The inside of the ruck is huge. And I don't know if I'll ever have to drop my ruck or not. I'd rather be able to still have supplies should I end up in a situation where I have to evade but the weight of a full ruck would slow me down.

How is the Marine ILBE? I see one on CL for 65 bucks right now. Good price? I know it's like over 200 new.

It's an okay deal, you can't really go wrong with it but I always found that it fit my manlet frame kind of awkwardly.

It's the best milsurp going.

It's an Arc'teryx bag, which means it's quality (assuming it isn't beat to shit and back).

It's better than most Kelty commercials, about on par with mid-level commercial bags.

It's heavy for a hiking backpack, but light-ish as far as milsurp goes.

Depends on what skills you have. The biggest problem I see with it is that most people will want to bring a tent with them, or a sleeping bag, and there is honestly no reasonable way to attach that kind of shit to an ILBE assault pack.

However, if you're open to hammock camping, that could be more feasible. You can get a fancy-pants hammock that comes with a rain fly (but let's be honest, if you're trying to innawoods with just an ILBE assault pack, you're probably not spending the money on that), or you can bring a tarp with you and set that up over the hammock. you'll still need padding/insulation below you to stay anywhere near warm though.

I actually wanted one of those hard when I first started getting into the whole "tactical equipment" thing, but I decided against wearing all Flecktarn and now I'm going for solid, flat colours.

They do make Flecktarn backpack covers, so you can go full stealth.

HAHAHA, holy shit, I cannot stop laughing. if you want treated goose down 400 dollars is the cost at wholesale of 24 oz of it. Jesus, I know I am on /k/ but still people should have some idea of worth.
>>
Have you guys ever done a minimalistic "survival" expedition? Or at least fuck around with it when you're innawoods? I'm going camping in November I want to try my hand at building a wigwam. Since it's my first time trying I'll obviously bring a tent in case, but it'd be cool to build and sleep in my own shelter.

Tell me about it, man. The start up costs for real outdoorsing are crazy. And you can sink so much fucking money into cars, guns, video games, etc.

At least my legos have partially funded my outdoors gear and gun purchases recently..Yes I have been selling some of the rarer ones.

I am the person who paid that, I do not regret it because I know the costs of the materials involved, which is something others seem to have issues with.

>modular sleep system for camping?

For camping I use a Cabelas Alaskan Guide 6-man tent, (with wall-to-wall carpeting)
a Cabelas Lounge cot and either my old mid-weight Boy Scout nylon/flannel sleeping
bag or a heavy canvas/flannel bag (I've pinned both together with safety pins for deer
hunting in Michigan during Nov).

I see no point in being uncomfortable when camping.

For a bug-out bag on the other hand, the military modular system can be doable and it's
good down to below freezing and will keep you dry, though it is also heavy and bulky.

If you're willing to accept the weight & bulk, you might as well add a Thermarest self-inflating
sleeping pad inside the bivy bag for comfort and added insulation.
>>
>>22774198
I have a very light sleeping bag I paid not much for, and an old one that has been in the house for years so is basically free for me.
If I decide I want something more, I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I'm not one to knock people for their spending habits, but at least I don't waste my money on booze and smoking.
>Hey anon, is your family rich or something, you always go on vacations
No we just aren't fucking retards with our money.

I was in the same boat, my wife and I were using old bags my parents didnt use anymore. We got sick of lugging the bags around, even with a nice compression bag they were still 20L. I did a lot of research and for two people we decided that in terms of money spent and weight that a two person sleeping quilt is the way to go.
>>
>>22768758

>>
>>22774210
You would be surprised at the number of backpackers who realize that sleeping is more important than saving grams. The one thing to not skimp on is sleeping equipment. If you arent well rested you dont have as much energy and it wont matter how light your pack is then.
