I bought Shadows of Chernobyl but I only play it every couple of days since it puts me on edge and then I can't sleep. I play it really seriously and slowly being very careful. It makes my mind not be able to settle down.
I have to go back to the first underground tunnels section for the third time now. The first time I couldn't find the Strelok's stash and the second time I didn't exit the right tunnel to fulfill the objective.

Just got to pripyat on my first playthrough of vanilla SOC. I love the atmosphere but I feel like the story is just eh. I dont know anything about the factions except that duty and freedom hate each other, monolith is a bunch of dicks and military is a bunch of bigger dicks. I've been using the ghost suit since I found it and haven't seen anything better. I have just a couple anomalies like mom's something and meat something. The only positive one and the high health one? I like playing it but I don't know, it's not very gripping for me. Am I missing something?

Have you been reading the dialog of the main quest? Have you been completing side quests? A lot of the games greatness is gained through random events because of how the A-life works, so its pretty much just your experience in stalking that brings great stories and fun times. Without trying to spoil it I want to say that there are multiple endings and the 'true' ending isn't very obvious.

Progress for me as a character feels kinda halted. I have the bullpup with the grenade launcher that was rechambered in 5.45 and the ghost suit and I just haven't come across anything I can use that is substantially better. The ammo is relatively abundant (maybe not so much that I got into pripyat and am fighting the monolith more. I might make the switch to something 5.56 soon) and the damage and accuracy is good for now. The ghost suit is really good with it's healing properties and it's pretty protective. I haven't found anything that gives me really good armor and rad protection and I keep looking around for some sick ass exoskeleton armor but it's no where to be found. Anyone know if there is some way I can increase the durability of my weapon?

Cant really help you on the weapon durability but I would look around 100 rads Bar before I left for Pripyat they were selling Exo suits, also something like the SEVA suit from the scientist offer great Rad and Anomaly protection. Also you should try switching to 9x39 if it isnt too late, the ammo is hard to find but I think its worth it.

Ignore the guy, he's just spouting some buzzwords he himself doesn't even understand. Lost Alpha basically follows the Olddocumentdesignstory.pdf-era plot for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : Shadow of Chernobyl but one of the Dez0wave team members, Loxotron, who was in charge of the project for some time, decided that they should mix up the already-existing plot with some unnecessary and mindbogglingly stupid Illuminati elements. They aren't a HUGE part of the story, but the little you get is kinda obnoxious. Anyway, the biggest annoyance of Lost Alpha, in my opinion anyway, were unskippable in-game cutscenes, bad scenario design around early-to-midgame(Dead City and Army Warehouses had a bunch of stupid bullshit) and Clear Sky-tier linearity(can only go to maps when the plot calls for it) as well as the seeming lack of replay value since there's almost no surprises the A-Life of the game throws at you and many setpieces are designed to be played the same way every time and allow little room for making up your own strategies for them which,in my opinion anyway,is actively deterring playing the game ever again.

don't forget the utter insanity that is the backtracking, insanely long walking distances where NOTHING EVER HAPPENS along the way, the bullshit design that punishes you for even thinking of finding shortcuts, the awful quality loot, the stupid, hammy details like the Ringu little girl in a frame or the evil laughing skeleton that turn the zone into a cheap carnival ride, the stiff, unnatural and "quirky" dialogues and finally, the new voice acting being Call of Pripyat-tier.
it's functional and big, that's all it's got going for it. If i were in charge, i'd strip the story down, spend a year filling the zone with decent loot, AI, interesting quests and NPCs and making it less of a walk in the park.
