For shame /k/.

Post AKs. Talk about AKs. Ask what you should get for your first AK and get predictable responses.

Wish there was a way to get bakelite furniture on yugos, specifically the M92 PAP. Anyone know a particular wood stain color that somewhat matches bakelite?
>>
I bought my first AK, an M&M M10, a few weeks ago and the bolt carrier keeps getting hung up on something when I rack it back. I think it might be the hammer. Like, it'll cycle and everything but if I pull it back to a certain point it'll just stay there. What do?

Apologies for the shit quality, but it's 11PM. I just got done staining the furniture to make it match the AK-47 grip I used to replace the black TAPCO one. The Draco finally has a bakelite grip.
>>
>>22389737
Almost all AK's do that. If it really bothers you then just file/sand/polish the hammer until it's slick with a constant curve. Otherwise, just don't ease the BCG forward. If you let it drop, it should never get hung up. If it still gets hung up even when you release the charging handle (don't guide it forward) that's when you have problems.

Dry fire it whilst holding down trigger, if it still catches enough to hold the bolt open during slow manual cycle then you need to polish the hammer or take a bastard file to it

During normal fire the hammer is held down by the disconnect which holds the hammer down lower than normal

AK newbie here, i'm about to buy my first AK.

What should I take into consideration when choosing between 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm, and 5.56x45mm?

Is there any reason to choose one over the other for personal preference?

If you're gonna get an ak or just one ak period, get one in 7.62x39. A good home defense ak would be 5.45x39 compared to 7.62x39. It's also worth noting that 5.45 shoots flatter than 7.62
>>
>>22389944

you could put some modern crap over it, but it's fine as long as you don't, like, dunk it into the river for an hour, or wrap it up in damp towels and forget about it. basically once it's done you just put another coat on every 3-12 months.

With the Toth tool mag he dropped it while it was in the rifle just a few times on a steel target. It only hit good once. The other times it just glanced off and wouldn't have damaged even the shittiest promag. He's fallen into the trend of producting quantity over quality and his reviews feel like they were filmed the same day he received the product.
>>
>>22390238

This.

If you just want an AK because you want an AK, get a new production WASR. They're actually pretty good quality, it's the old ones that sucked. Look for the triangle stamp on the receiver, means it was built on an actual military receiver, tend to have better QC than civilian made ones.

A new production WASR will eat everything you feed it and function flawlessly. It won't look pretty (can be changed with some TLC), but it does the job.

If you want something that looks and performs amazingly because you want to oper8 or some shit, then yeah, save and get an arsenal.

NPAPs are a little more expensive than WASRs but better made and definitely less expensive than arsenals. Their main downside is less of an aftermarket, but that's about it.

It's a great gun. I hold 2 MOA consistently, although that's with off the shelf ammo. It's round count is still <100 and I haven't had any chances to put reloads through it yet.

Cons though, are that you have to use the Molot top mount, which has some issues (like the stupid quick release, notice I removed it) is the only way to mount a scope.

Also the muzzle blast is directed back at the shooter (and everyone within 10 feet). Having said that, adding the POSP has removed this effect, which is nice.

I am ecstatic with the gun though. It is gorgeous in person and extremely comfortable. I plan on keeping it for a long, long time.

Next step though, is getting the stock bedded, and hopefully get it shooting MOA or sub MOA.

Red Army Standard and Hot Shot both have factories in Romania. If there is money to be made, I guarantee they will make 5.45x39 in countries without import bans. 5.45x39 may dip for a bit, but it's going to remain a strong contender for AKs.

Wait, I mean, yes! 5.45 is kill. Don't buy any. Save it for me.

>New Romanian military receiver
>implying they don't use magazine dimples

This is why I hate you wasr fags. I don't hate you because you're poor, that's fine, lots of people are. I hate you because you tell straight up lies about the quality of your guns and what they're capable of.
>HURR ITS WHAT I BOUGHT SO THAT MEANS ITS GOOD

So it's not a greasy, runny hot pocket shit anymore, but it's still shit, and nothing you should be proud of.

>>
>>22393664

Enlighten me as to where I said "new" reciever.

WASRs with the stamp are built on old recievers. However, they are still military and therefore less likely to have historic WASR issues like poorly done rivets and crooked trunnions.

Nobody is trying to say they are just as good as arsenals or whatever. Shitting on something because it isn't what you have screams buyers remorse. Enjoy your arsenal or whatever, that's cool dude, nobody is saying it sucks. But the "WASR is shit" viewpoint is outdated. Modern WASRs are capable weapons, not pretty, but they go bang every time and can handle a lot of abuse. Overall a decent deal for only 500 bucks.
>>
>>22390786
Ah I did not realize that. Very cool.
>>
>>22393785
You go right ahead and find me one 7.62x39 stamped reciever AK variant that the romanian military EVER used that didn't have magazine dimples. Don't worry fuckface, I'll wait.

Also, when did the Romanians issue semi auto AKs to their soldiers? These never could have been machine guns, at least not to be eligible for import to the US.
>>

I just realized that the canted crown on the brake will be horrible for lefties like myself. Are they usually adjustable?
>>
>>22393888
Slant brakes don't make enough of a difference to even notice. You'll be fine.
>>
>>22393896
What if I adjust it to 12 o'clock opening so it just compensates and pushes the muzzle down, if at all? Would that be a feasible measure if I feel like shooting from both shoulders?
>>
>>22393785
>poorfag called out for telling lies

>>
>>22393902
You can shoot it as it is from both shoulders and I swear you wouldn't know the difference. The slant brake really doesn't do much of anything.

>>
Came across a video review of the Sarco kit, uploaded last month:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8huHSKpSvk
>>
>>22393927
No problem anon. If at a later time, you decide you do want to change the muzzle device, you can drill additional locking notches in the slant brake or buy something else.
>>
>>22393933
>The receiver and barrel had to be demilled
What in the what?
>>
>>22393968
It means the barrel and receiver had to be chopped up overseas before they could be imported, then the receiver stubs and barrel pieces have to be removed from the usable parts (trunnions, gas block, front sight, et cetera)
>>
>>22393968
Yeah that tripped me up at first, but from his tone I inferred that he didn't do any machining himself.
>>
>>22393974
Thanks. I thought for some reason he meant he had to cut up his own receiver. Didn't make any sense.

What's the number of US parts required?
>>
Is there any real disadvantage of buying kits? It seems mismatching numbers and thus possible headspace problems would be the biggest concern.

Otherwise, you may be saving 200 bucks if you build your own kit.
>>
>>22393888
Like other users have said, it makes no difference. If you want a leftie version for some reason, tapco's slant brake has slots for leftie or rightie.
>>
>>22394009
You're not going to have AK headspace issues if it doesn't come with a barrel. No kits come with barrels these days, so matching numbers only matters if yofu want matching numbers.

The biggest downside with building a kit is the price of tools to do it right. If you already have those, it's pretty cheap. I can crank out an AK for a few hundred dollars cheaper than buying one, and get better quality, now that I have the tools.
>>
>>22394009
Buy your own go and no-go gauges.

The only real advantage to building your own is that you know whether or not everything was done right. I build from kits because sooner or later, we won't be able to anymore, either through regulation or scarcity of kits.
>>
>>22394025
>>22394069
If I'm looking at only one AK in my future, is it better off just to buy an NPAP for 600$?
>>
>>22394093
Might as well. Tooling for building your own is expensive.
>>
>>22393903

I don't own a WASR. However, I have handled and fired them, along with arsenals and veprs. As far as build quality goes, veprs definitely feel the most solid and rugged. Arsenals walk all over WASRs in terms of aesthetics, consistent build quality, and a degree of accuracy. But once again, WASRs are not shit. They aren't amazing guns by any stretch of the word, but my entire point was that if you just want an AK to have an AK, to hold a universal symbol of resistance while also being a firearm that goes bang every time, WASRs are a good deal. They would be irrelevant if PAPs shared the aftermarket, as they are better than WASRs in every way for only a few more dollars (and the huge paddle stocks). But until the yugo aftermarket grows, WASRs are a go-to for people wanting an AK that fires every time the trigger is pulled and can be modified in any which way.

Coming from someone who has handled pre-2005 WASRs, the new ones feel like arsenals compared to them. Still overall a cheap gun for the cheap price, but now they are worthy of the AK name. Old ones were absolute trash.

I never said any of those things, so you can kindly shove your post up your ass.
>WASRs are bottom of the barrel, shit tier AKs, always have been, always will be.
But you're wrong. There have been, and still are, AKs that are far worse than even the low-point of WASRs. Know what the WASRs weren't ever known for? Things like blowing out rear trunnions, barrel issues so profound that bullets would actually be extracted from their casings upon manual ejection, crooked trunnions etc. etc. I can name you the AKs that had these issues, and they aren't even Century products. WASRs are objectively not the nicest AKs, and anyone who says so is a fool. What they are are fantastic bang-for-your-buck rifles with a CHF chrome lined barrel that run like an AK, put .30 round in torso-sized targets at 300 with ease, and have all of the customization options in the world for an AK. Pretty much the N-PAP, except it has more aftermarket capability. It's an AK. I've ran nearly 14,000 rounds through mine over the four years I've owned it and it fits me like a glove now. Hate all you want, but at least try to base your hatred in reality and not some asspained hatred against the userbase that is so terminal you can't even fully read the posts you quotes.
