What does your stockpile of mags look like, /k/?
What do you recommend people stock up on and why?
Lancer for metal lip? Steel because it's beefy? Gen 2 PMAGs because they are ubiquitous? Any reason to choose a color other than black?
>>
a couple PMAGs i don't use cause my lower doesn't like them, 10 aluminum GI mags, and 2 10 rounds LAR pistol mags, because canada.
>>
ATF pls go
>>
>>30585454
its arbitrary but i think 10 magazines per each regularly used semi auto rifle and pistol is good. its a nice even number and you have enough to use, replace, store away, sell, or whatever.
what to stock up on? usually its OEM magazines, or whatever works best. a shitty unreliable magazine is about half a step above no magazine at all.
as far as ar15 magazines go, im partial to pmags. theyve always worked consistently well for me, theyre affordable and easy to find.
lancers are good as well as plain old aluminum GI mags. note that some gi mag brands can be hit or miss.
>>
>>30585454
>10 aluminum GI mags
What's a good source for these? I was looking at the milspec ones from Brownell's but I'd prefer the real thing.
>>
Are the gen 3 worth the extra money? I know they can be used in other platforms, but they are also looser in an AR and allow for more rattle, even the rounds inside from what I've read.

>>30585490

WTF lower is that?
>>
>>30585550

its more the fact that the either the lower is out of spec, or my bolt catch is out of spec, because the combination of the two causes PMAGs, both gen2 and gen3, to rock excessively back and forth and makes the bolt catch get stuck behind the follower, so the mags don't drop free and bolt stops halfway into battery and slams home when i yank the mag out.

its a canadian made NEA lower.
>>
>>30585523

mine were from a wholesaler up here, i think they are NMHTG or OKAY.
>>
>>30585550
>>30585595
its tolerance stacking, it happens. one component is slightly larger or smaller but still within specifications, another component can be the same way. add the two together and you run into small compatibility issues like this.

Leaving a mag loaded doesn't degrade the spring you retarded shitlord.
>>
>>30585678
That isn't true, though. Springs eventually lose their temper by being flexed repeatedly, not by being compressed. You can leave a mag loaded for years and it'll function just fine.

I think I will buy lancer, USGI and Gen 3 magpul to cover my bases, probably 10 of each and all of them black.

Dude. Ew.
>>
>>30585645
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion man. Not everyone is waiting for their homestead to be besieged. I stockpile mags simply for when the law changes and i can no longer buy them. I keep them in the original packaging too.
And your analogy is flawed, cardboard food packages literally are garbage, unloaded magazines have value, they're sold unloaded.

Is there any reason to choose aluminum mags over pmags/lancers?

I'd imagine polymer is better solely on being far more resistant to accidentally crushing it and blocking the follower or anything
>>
>>30588359
Price. Usually you can find USGI mags on sale somewhere around 7 to 8 dollars each.
>>
>>30585454
How long do you leave your mags loaded?
How long do you reckon a loaded mag is good for?

Top row are my "user" mags, mix of okay usgi, pmags, and lancers that I bring to the range. I have about 30 usgi and 50 additional pmags stashed away in ammo cans, some in my car, a couple in my bug out bag, etc.
>>
>>30588359

Both have their pros/cons. Polymer can crack if dropped at very low temperatures. USGI mags are a bit more narrow and shorter by about a half inch and are sleaker so they work better in double mag pouches vs pmags.
>>
>>30588359
If you keep your pmags loaded the feed lips can sometimes crack, necessitating the use of the dust cover.
>>
>>30588379

>metal feed lips
indefinitely
>polymer feed lips
slightly less indefinitely

also learn how springs work
>>
>>30588472
i know how a spring works. i'm not a scientist though. i know spring creep is a thing but nobody says "don't keep them loaded for x years".
>>
>>30588463
magpul has made them stronger, they no longer include dust covers (they havent for a few years now).
in anycase, i dont think its a bad idea to diversify which AR mags you have. after all, even magpul has only been around since the 90s, aluminum mags have been around since 50s and 60s.
not knocking magpul, but who knows how pmags or lancers will stand the test of time

The Gen M2 PMags don't come with dust covers ...

... but you can still get them separately.
>>
>>30588886
the bullets keep the dust out just fine. you don't need a "dust cover".

These are replacements
>>
>>30587206
Both. Gen 2 or 3 whichever you can find cheaper.
>>
>>30585454
I've got 7 30 round PMAGS because thats how much I can carry in my chest rig and my rifle at a time, an old 30 round GI mag that my uncle gave me. I've also got 2 20 round and 1 10 round PMAGS that my parents got me for Christmas. Planning on getting more 30 round mags, but I always end up spending my extra money on ammo. I don't believe I have enough of either, but its a lot cheaper and easier to reload magazines than it it to reload casings.
>>
had some major problems with pmags on my .300BLK, the GI mags work fine, and I have some Lancers and the new DD mag in the mail. Wish me luck.

problems?

Its always good to have unopened mags to resell or know you have mags without a round count.
>>
>>30589106
pmags dont always work with 300, the front lip catches the fatter round.
>>
>>30589168
> all my reloads have been pointed bullets

I use my hexmags for 300 BLK. I get less binding, but it's never been horrible with my PMags either
>>
I've got 8 USGI mags that work flawlessly, and I've got 10 Gen 3 Pmags that I've opened exactly 2 of. All 30 rounders.
I want to order more but it's a little more difficult for me to get them than the average Kommando...
I might order some after my next paycheck if I split 20 or so with my cousin.
