Spyderco Caly 3.5 in ZDP-189 is my newest piece.

Thinned out the primary grind using a Norton Crystolon coarse.

Re-profiled the edge-bevel to ~7 degrees per side using s DMT XXC

Edge-bevel polished freehand using Sigma Power Select II stones to a 13,000 grit finish.

Micro-bevel using Spyderco F rods.
>>
>>27938805
7 degrees??

I am assuming this is just a pocket razor and has been sharpened this way because you have the skills/tools to do it and not for any practical purpose?

From an EDC perspective it seems like a waste of steel and a sure fire way to chip your edge.
>>
>>27938906

My EDC knives are typically used for food prep, cardboard breakdown and double layer clam-shell packaging.

I've never had any issues running my edge-bevels at ~7 degrees per side with a 15 degree per side micro-bevel. Besides that, technically it is thickness behind the edge that matters, not angles, and my knives are mostly around ~0.010" thick at 1/32" behind the edge.

Most modern production folders come with stock geometries that are designed around minimizing warranty claims from clueless users and looking "tough". I know people who run their *choppers* at 15 dps and ~0.025"-0.035" thick behind the edge, which is comparable to most production folders now.

I got some new stuff the other day.
Condor Nessmuk
Condor Jungle Bowie 2
Cold Steel Smatchet & Chinese War Sword machete
Sog Gambit
(and a police baton)

Nothing special, just for fun. Going to be using the nessmuk for edc alongside my usual leatherman. Its got a good shape to its blade and handle. And I like that there's no snap on the sheath for easy in & out lol.

The Nessmuk is an interesting choice. Scandi grinds are great for being easy to sharpen, but I prefer kydex sheaths for EDC fixed blades so I can wear them in-pocket.

Heavier but it's a mean slicer
>>
>>27940274
The Nilakka would be my first venture into a high-end EDC knife, been fucking around with mid tier Kershaw and Spyderco

I have a lansky kit, and will proably get a Spydero Sharp macer

As I understand it, the full flat grind is fairly fragile, but also very easy sharpen as there is no bevel, just a single plane from edge to spine, and with no faggot ken onion recuvre to sharpen

mostly to cut boxes and slice paper edge testing while I am bored

Y/N? apology foor poor english 8 beers for typing does not one good make
>>
>>27940238

https://www.ltwrightknives.com/next-gen.html
>>
>>27940236

Really, the choice between those models depends on what you want the knife to be good at.

The PM2 and Manix are both fairly robust designs that will handle some fairly hard use, the Nilakka is a much thinner grind behind the edge than those two and lacks any sort of hand or finger guard.

The Caly 3.5 in VG-10 is a good value and much easier to sharpen to a highly polished edge (or thin out for that matter), but I would avoid the ZDP-189 version unless you have the sharpening equipment to handle it.
>>
>>27940330

I'm impressed, 1/8" at the spine and FFG is actually quite reasonable.

I was thinking about the bushcrafter hc (1075 hc steel) - it's 3/32'' at the spine, and a bit longer. Not that I regret going with the next gen, it's a great fit.

I particularly like full flat grinds, though I have to say, my Benchmade Bone Collector in d2 is one of the better cutting knives I own.

I don't have the tools to measure exactly how thin it is behind the edge, but it's sharpened at 20 degrees per side (1000 grit ceramic rod, because of the recurve).
>>
>>27939673
None. Because my knives can be easily sharpened, can hold an edge fairly well, thick enough to be used as pry bars when needed, overly built handles, they also have pocket clips for easier access and most importantly can be opened and closed faster than the opinel can say "hon hon hon"

>>27940471

Yeah, I really prefer to use benchstone so I usually avoid knives with recurves. I sharpened one for a friend and I got quite annoyed at how long it took to sharpen on my Sharpmaker set, which I usually only use for micro-bevels.

I bought a cheap micrometer at an auto parts store to take measurements on my knives.

My newest fixed blade is this Calton Necker in 440C that is 0.070" thick at the spine and ~0.010" thick behind the edge (at my usual ~7.5 degrees per side with a 15 dps micro-bevel)
>>
>>27940542

using a lansky turnbox it's no big deal to sharpen recurves, as long as the steel isn't retarded, but it works on my s30v north fork, which has a very similar blade, just a bit smaller. Just have to be careful not to fuck up the tip.

yep. You sound like a newbie all right. The crkt m16 is ok for the money, i guess, but for low budget (say 40 bucks), my top pick would be a kershaw link - really good design, made in the us, and it shows - really well put together, and good design too.

right on, im a big fan of pocket carry myself. my wallet, flashlite, & mutlitool are all pocketclipped... if thats the sheath (in the pic) you edc, just how do you carry it if you dont mind? or are you saying you just stick it in your pocket loose like?

crummy pic i know (im on my break in my car), buts heres that nessmuk. I went with it over the bushlore as I had a hunch id like the feel of that hump against my thumb in a choked up grip. Im glad I went it, has a natural feel to it.
I had an idea I could use the condor jungle bowie 2 for edc, but its too long. Do you have a preference for blade length for edc?

>>27942274

Basically, I attached a pocket clip to the kydex sheath using a Chicago screw, this allows me to wear the sheath clipped to the inside of my jeans pocket like a folder.

When drawing the knife, I just have to make sure the top of the kydex sheath comes out above the pocket line so that I can re-sheath the knife after use without risking cutting the fabric.

It actually works quite well.

its not true FFG anymore there is a slight micro bevel and they dont have the heat treat problem anymore which was the biger issue, the friction from sharpening was fucking the heat treat at the edge, which they fixed. Steel type could be better but as you see from that picture it cut the lip of a plastic bottle in half with no edge damage.

I think you would love this knife, i fucking love mine and east cardboard and plastic.

dont really stab much with it or any edc knife i have ever had so hand slip just isnt a real issue for me

the hole is for thumb deployment and without it this one wouldnt work well

Ergos are a personal decision and it feels fine for me but you can always buy different scales

I notice the liner cut out more with a stronger grip but i dont think i will be gripping that strong for the length of time to make it matter

I only wish it had a choil

none of it matters because i got this knife because i liked the way it looks and im glad it does well enough for me for edc

I posted in the last one but only had my work knife, which is what I carry at work.

Other than that I usually have my randall knife on me.

I know it's in rough condition, but it's all a good 40 some odd years older than your average 4channer, and it has been used as a TOOL, not a decoration for every single year of it. It's been used for everything from cutting fishing line to hammering nails to prying metal apart to cutting firewood.

I've been meaning to polish it lately as I've slowed down it's usage the last couple of years just from myself not being active anymore, and do something about the horrid chips in the blade, but I rarely notice unless I'm cutting something small like string or fishing line and it slips in.

Doesn't really matter when you're hacking in to a piece of wood or rubber
>>

Yeah, once I figured out that I could carry a fixed blade that way I mostly stopped buying production folders and I mostly buy 6.5" - 7" OAL fixed blades by custom makers now.
>>
>>27946086

I use a micro-bevel on my knives because it allows a lower edge bevel angle while still being strong enough for my cutting tasks, so cutting performance is increased without making the edge too fragile.

It also makes it easy to keep the apex touched up between uses for some time, similarly to the way a loaded strop would but without the risk of rounding over the apex excessively that a strop has.

Why 7 and 15 degrees specifically? Seven because I am relying on a large amount of testing done on some forums that show that an edge-bevel between 6-8 degrees is strong enough to carve wood without damage, much less anything I would be doing with it.

15 for the micro-bevel because its the lowest setting on my Spyderco's Sharpmaker that I use to set apex micro-bevels, and because at double the edge bevel angle it is able to cut off any burr left from shaping the edge bevel, making it easier to set a clean, straight apex.

Technically, sharpness is a function of how thin the very apex of the edge is, and changes in edge bevel angles only have a small influence on this because they all ultimately can terminate in an apex of similar width (pic related).

What angle can influence is thickness behind the edge, which has a significant effect on cutting ability (how much force is required to make a cut) but not sharpness per se.

Grit finish, on the other hand, mainly affects whether the knife is better at push cutting or slicing. It is possible for a 400 grit edge to be as sharp as a 13,000 grit edge, but one will push cut newsprint and the other will slice rope extremely well.

Poorfag reporting in.

Just bought this ka-bar folder for $20. I needed a new edc knife, my old one was tearing holes in my pants because of its sharp corners. It's actually really hard to find a cheap knife that doesn't have serrations or pointy corners or other gimmicky bullshit, this is the simplest there was.

Anyone know if these are any good? Does ka-bar actually make them or do they brand some chinese junk?

More importantly, a lot of those designs are aesthetically displeasing, but incredibly ergonomic and functional (Kiwi, Tuff, Kukri) built for a specific task (Civilian, Caspian Salt), or the design of a collaboration with a custom knifemaker (just about everything else pictured.) A knife can only be faulted for its looks if it's not functional as well as ugly.

I like buck style knives better too and hope to make much larger knives from some tool steel later on when I learn more but for now bolts of unknown origin and composition will have to do

here is the forge and setup that was used
>note the pipe with an air nozzle shoved into it and vice grips on the handle for air speed adjustment because there was no other way

I've been wanting to get my uncle to teach me how to beat some metal into shape but I don't seem to make time.
>>

I was bored on my day off last week, drank a few beers and watched 4 hours of blacksmithing videos on youtube and was like "fuck I need to build a forge so I can do manly shit with a hammer" so that sunday I bought/acquired the shit I needed and just decided to build the thing
>>
>>27949735
in other words nobody taught me other than the internet, just remember this one thing: the steel may look black and cold but that shit is still too fucking hot to pick up even with gloved hands

>>27949735

I don't have a decent workspace for shit like that, either. Garage is too small to accomodate it plus my car & whatnot.

yeah... even grade 8 bolts have less than .4% carbon. Your maximum hardness would be around 38-45 HRC if you were lucky enough to guess the temperature upon quenching.

a couple questions
1.what grade is the bolt I had? it just had 4 radial lines like pic related, I have looked for this and found nothing
2.what scrap materials would make good knives? I already know lawnmower blades, leaf springs and rail spikes are out of the picture

one more question: what liquid is best to quench in water, used motor oil? unicorn piss?

I've done basically the exact same thing as this, except I went stock removal rather than forging due to my tiny back yard that's shared with another house. I have a knife that'll be done tomorrow or Monday so I'll have pictures to post soon.

This depends on the steel, if you're usingg a simple tool steel like O-1, 1084 or 1095, then oil of pretty much any kind is the good stuff. Most stainless steels are air hardened, which is really best left to a company that routinely handles the stuff. Water really isn't used much with modern steels.

okay, thanks
I've just been using used motor oil from my truck, but I have thought about trying to do a sort of quench in bearing grease so I don't drip black oil all over everything. what do you think?
>>
>>27950135
Not actually totally sure about the bearing grease, but I'm sure someone on the Internet somewhere has done it. I'd think it probably wouldn't work as well as used motor oil though, because if bubbles form in the grease they'll prevent the steel from cooling quickly enough. The same thing can happen in oil but not to the same extent.

I don't think any of the Lansky systems are really designed to hit the angles a straight razor needs nor to be fine enough. I recommend you Google some straight razor forums and do some reading on recommended sharpening progressions for straight razors.

Do you really need the toughness of the thick profile and toughness focussed heat treatment in an EDC blade? Don't get me wrong, it will work, but unless you really need the robustness I'd look for something thinner run at higher hardness by a custom maker.
