I guess Id recommend Black Lagoon, as long as you accept that it runs on 80 action movie logic. Fact is, most /k/ approved anime is trash that only gets mentioned because of the dearth of quality stuff. Jormungand was shit, Gate was shit, Votoms was constantly being brought down by its bottom of the barrel protagonist. Jinroh is good for the visuals but the messages are really hamfisted. Bebop was fun.

It's about a lone wolf who's forced to join a mercenary group, their battles and climb to the top, and the twist at the end is some of the darkest scenes in anime. Quite good really. Probably goes in my number 3 spot for favorite anime of all time.

as soon as the plot diverged from the manga it went to shit very fast.
the manga was great. the first two thirds or so especially had characters dying and new ones showing up often and unexpectedly and in that way it had a sense of realism and tension. I think by the end of the series the author felt pressured to give the more popular characters plot armor. the last arc was all battles and no story/character development too. at least it didn't have an axed ending.

Freeman is like, the most Japanese potter that ever potted. He gets kidnapped in America on an Artshow, but he's Japanese as fuck.

Not exactly. Most of the better works of fiction are more focused on telling their story and leaving the audience to dig out the feels itself, rather than on repeatedly hitting a button. And even when they try hitting a button - they are subtle with it.
Unfortunately, most of the animes can only telegraph their attempts at connecting to the audience with the subtlety of a US military invasion, and GSG is no exception.

But I didn't feel sympathy towards them at all, since I saw them as a wondrous portrayal of complete monstrosities gone way beyond the boundaries of humanity, while for Balalaika I have nothing save for pure admiration and respect.
You see, that a recurring thing for many actually good works. In them, authors are subtly having a talk with the audience, carefully showing elements in different light and allowing different perspectives to be held and conclusions to be drawn, instead of dropping anvils around for the sake of pressing a particular button.

Well, to be fair - the biggest gripe with GSG for me is not even the clumsy hammering of it's every emotional point, which is still horrendous, but rather how artificial the whole tragedy is. Every element of every character and every plot point happens not as a part of a proper story, but merely as a device for driving the emotional hammering deeper. Most things happening and shown are happening and are shown for no reason other than "it's the feelsiest option", and it really shows. In that, the whole attempt appears very artificial and ingenue. I can't cry when I see that someone is desperately trying to force me to.
Le funney parallels - we are supposed to see young innocent girls being engineered into machines with the sole purpose of murder as tragic, but I can only see the irony of the story itself turning it's characters into artificial constructs built with the sole purpose of tugging on audience's heartstrings.

Full picture, man. There's a ton of trafficked snuff-children going through Roanapur, but exactly two of them managed to become mass-murderers. The whole tragedy of what happened to them is kinda made moot by how deep down the hole they went, and by how beak the whole situation in Roanapur is. It says lots about the worth of the tragedy of innocence lost in the setting when even the SYMPATHETIC MAIN CHARACTERS are totes fine with child-trafficking business.
People are dying by hundreds every day in that fucked up city, so a couple of children ending up screwed up is only noticeable in how deadly they became in that screw up.
Plus, the jaded response and it's adequacy to the jaded world is one of the major themes in the anime - you don't try coming up to Revy or Balalaika and pitying their sorry fates unless you want a bunch of extra holes made in you. And in the city that they've grown to accept as their home, it's the one valid response that allows them to carry on breathing despite how pointlessly cruel it might appear to an outsider like Rock.
