Kurgabinsk Edition

> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.

No sooner had the BMP-1P been rolled out than the GBTU commissioned further efforts in improving the glaring inadequacies of the IFV that had been painfully explicated in the Middle East. In 1974, two parallel ventures, Object 675/681 and Object 768/769 (probably from teams at Chelyabinsk and Kurgan) were undertaken, with all four prototype designs incorporating a two man turret, a rectification of the drawbacks of the one-man turret in the BMP-1, with the commander being relocated to the turret. This movement of the commander’s station removed the infrared searchlight protruding from the hull, allowing a non-obstructed 360 degree view and weapon traverse. However, a bigger turret meant less room in the transport compartment, which the Object 768/769 series attempted to deal with via an elongated hull. In 1972, weaponry was selected, an improved 73 mm, the Zarnitsa, fixed much of the range drop-off apparent with the Grom, and was installed on the Object 681 and 768, while the 30 mm 2A42 autocannon was trialed on the 675 and 769. All vehicles also retained a 9Sh119 with a Fagot or Konkurs missile, with an interior firing position. The 675 emerged as the winning “BMP-2” in 1977, with the longer hulls requiring factory retooling. Its 30 mm also had far superior range (2-4 km), which made dealing with helicopter threats and dispersed infantry more realistic, and more importantly, made the BMP a viable fire support vehicle for leading tank groups. Later upgrades included lead-impregnated applique armour and command modules in the BMP-2K.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
Much like the BMP-1, the BMP-2 would see extensive use in the Middle East, this time in the rugged foothills of Afghanistan. It is now well known that the comprehensive elevation and traverse offered by the BMP-2 was greatly prized in fighting in high altitudes, and certainly the 2A42 had a substantial amount of effectiveness against infantry positions. However, its side armour was not adequate against concentrated enemy heavy machinegun fire, which prompted immediate depot rebuilds, dubbed the BMP-2D, with an extra 10 mm of spaced applique armour, and an extra panel added to the rear of the turret, perhaps a lesson learnt from the Israeli conflicts. The cramped configuration of the BMP-2 also proved to be problematic, as extended operations and patrols typically ended up stowing all excess equipment and supplies on the exterior of the vehicle, making it vulnerable to loss from either mundane falling off or in combat. The interior was not much better than the BMP-1 in crew comfort either, as it would get very hot in Afghan conditions, exacerbated by a low silhouette. However, in anecdotal terms, it appeared to be a lot more successful than its predecessor in Afghanistan.
Interesting thing I read while ago about the Soviets in Afghanistan, throughout their occupation, they established hundreds of “zastavas” or small checkpoints and holdouts for soldiers on patrol. From 1979-89, according to the Soviets, not a single zastava fell to the mujahedin, which, if true, is an intriguing insight into Soviet base communications and tenacity in the field.

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links.

Exercise Anakonda has commenced in Poland with a multinational involvement including a significant US military presence, comprising 31,000 soldiers from 24 countries. The activities in the proceedings include a mock air assault operation, live fire drills, field training and cyber and electronic warfare exercises, among others. Unfortunately, it appears that one Polish civilian has been killed in a collision with a military convoy.
Raytheon’s Mission Support and Modernization business core competency is currently examining stockpiles of M60 Patton tanks worldwide, and in concert with the US Army to compile upgrade packages to sustain their combat viability into the future. Upgrades include comprehensive armour improvements, as well as gun and engine changes, and some other features like Jordan’s FCS upgrades.
Around 1536 companies have confirmed their attendance at Eurosatory in Paris next week, with the US continuing to be a dominating foreign presence, booking 136 companies. A notable increase in Latin American involvement has been seen, with a debut by Colombia as well as record attendances by other countries such as Brazil and Argentina.
Brazil has received a total of 50 armoured vehicles from the US Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program. This includes 12 M113A2 APCs, 34 M577A2 command vehicles and 4 M88A1 ARVs.
Portugal has had its final Pandur II vehicles delivered from GDELS this week. 14 vehicles was delivered, completing a final batch of 22, of a totally contracted 188 Pandur IIs of varying patterns.
The Republic of Korea Army plans to deploy 600 K806 and K808 armoured vehicles from 2016 to 2020. The two vehicles form Hyundai Rotem’s bid for the DAPA’s wheeled AFV project, in response to a shortage of all-terrain vehicles to transport infantry.

And that’s all for now.

So the Kikes did this. Good idea?

http://defense-update.com/20160608_ironvision.html

>Elbit will unveil next week at Eurosatory the IronVision, the first Helmet Mounted Display (HMS) designed for crewmembers of combat vehicles. Part of the company’s See-Through Armor (STA) architecture, IronVision is a 360-degree panoramic situational awareness system that enables tank and infantry crewmen to ‘see-through’ their vehicle’s armor in real-time, creating a complete and clear visualization of the battlefield, even under close hatches.

>IronVision’s 360-degree, high-resolution imagery is projected in full color and zero latency to the wearer’s visor, offering a bright and vivid display of the surroundings in both day and night and all types of weather.

>The helmet support system collects information from different digital sources within and around the vehicle, displays and tracks the positions of various features of interest ranging from a single person standing or crawling several meters near the vehicle to a moving vehicle located 150–300 meters away. By using the helmet, the wearer obtains the complete freedom of movement and can shorten the sensor-to-shooter cycle, all while remaining protected, under closed hatches.

>The IronVision fits all types of Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) and Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs).

>The new HMS is based on the proven sensors and system architecture that is already integrated with thousands of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft HMSs, systems that are being used by most modern air forces worldwide. IronVision incorporates advanced See-Through Armor (STA) technology that lets wearers ‘see through’ the armor of their vehicle to obtain full, real-time, Situational Awareness (SA) through which they can locate, identify and track enemy forces or capabilities.

T-55 on T-64?

I wouldn't have thought they'd still have any T-55s in service in Ukraine.

On a related note, how does the T-55/T-62 work in regard to loading? Did the gunner/commander just have to load, or did they cram a third guy in there?

Yep, fourth guy is the loader.

On other note upgraded T-55s and T-62s are my favourites.

The had loader, but one could say that T-62 had an automatic ejector, the same principle that is used on the T-72.

And one more thing, when the gun on the T-62 lowered because of the ejecting procedure, the gunner completely lost the visual on his target (the sight wasn't independent, so basically he could not ID the hit:

Smart of Elbit to leverage their work on the F-35 helmet for something like this. In hindsight, the shift of sensor fusion towards ground forces was inevitable.

That's because the Leclerc rénové includes parts of the UAE AZUR kit. The original AZUR kit was supposed to get rid of the base armor skirts (what we call "préblindages") and put the new modules.
Jaguar has another RWS. As far as I can tell they are going to make a dedicated RWS for the commander sight. Could have been better if they used HL-120 and built a RWS around it... That way the Leclerc could have a non obtrusive RWS...
Regarding the CAD drawing you guys saw way back then. It is just Nexter's studies. The constructors always put forward all they can achieve but the client always has the final word (it's him that pay the bill in the end...).

>>30232727
What did you expect from screening devices?
They are just smoke grenade tossed in front of the tank...
What strike me the most is that most countries use instant effect grenades. As far as I can search, Galix is the only system that launches one discharge of instant effect smoke grenades and two discharges of long effect smoke grenades... :/

>>30232784
Well it's always difficult to have a visual that is not corelated to the movements of the internal ear. Just take a panoramic sight and observe 6o clock in cross country, you'll see what I mean.
Regular training tend to reduce the motion sickness but it highly depends from person to person.

I actually went to a refresher training (kertausharjoitus) and had a change to explore the new bmp-2 deeply, even had the time to ask some questions from the panzermaster.

they got rid of all the useless shit on the inside, all the equipment are now in boxes on the outside of the ifv and all the hooks and bolt heads have been cut off.
the driver gets a thermal camera forward and a thermal reverse camera.
the gunner gets new optics (according to the panzermaster its not finalized yet, the bmp I was exploring had polish ones but they were going to be switched to ukrainian ones), thermals and new nightvision equipment. there's now padding on the left side of the gunner.
sadly no change to the feeding of the 2A42
the radios have been changed (dont remember the model or maker)
the commader also gets thermals and new nightvision equipment.
other then the new camo system they got going on nothing has been changed armor wise
>>
>>30236123
and the whole modernization project cost 30-40 million euros
>>
>>30236134
Wait the program price has gotten up. And what about the slight widening of the Bemari?

Also Ukrainian optics, we still go with the cheapest there is, but it is still better than what we got.
>>
>>30236206
The slight widening might be because the camo system, the nets are attached to sheets of something (no idea what the material is) which in turn are attached to the armor in a way that there is a gap between the armor and the sheets.
this is suppose to screen the bmps thermal footprint. from the pictures they showed us it works, the only things showing up white hot was the roadwheels and the commanders head when he was peaking out

>>
>>30244306
Thing is, on what ground are we differentiating Afghanistan from the Middle East? There aren't clearly demarcated boundaries for one. And Afghanistan is a whole mix of cultures and religions too. Also, there's a whole heap of overlapping vocabulary, like the British referring to Iran and Afghanistan and parts of Asia as the Middle East, and the Bush Administration referring to Afghanistan as part of a Middle East sphere; on the other hand, you have some atlases that classify Afghanistan as part of a South Asian zone. Either way, I don't think anyone can be right on this one.

Is the Zarnitsa still used? I've only ever seen the Grom on BVPs.

No change on that side.
It's just the third series, with the uparmored armor block for the gunner sight...

The US should have just brought those back to be converted to target practice.

Upgraded older gear is great, perfect for a lot of countries as well. Strong enough to absorb basic anti-tank weapons and squish dissenters, though simple enough to house in a warehouse for half a decade.

I'm honest to god pleased to see that the M60 is going to see service for a little longer. God damn gorgeous vehicle, I would own one if I could find someone who'd sell it. So far only a Cheiftan and some Soviet T-55/72's.

Question: how would an M60 perform against more modern tanks like T-72s, Leopard 1A5s, and Cheiftans? Assuming the crews are more or less identical and a normal European battleground.

pic unrelated
>>
>>30251871
I know the M60A3 did fine against T-55s and T-62s in the Gulf War, but according to the Marines themselves the M60s had some shortcomings with systems like electronics, so I'm not sure how well they'd do against modernized T-72s. It's probable that the M60A3 could do well against the poorly armored Leopard 1A5 but like most things it would depend on battlefield positioning.

A matter of who shoots first.

Anything can pen a Leo 1 variant and the M60A1 RISE's that the Marines used took out the equivalent of a T-72A without any issues.

Because it was an M60A1.

This is the next major breakthrough in tanks. 360 panoramic vision from inside the vehicle thought the use of integrated CCD sensors.

I knew it was coming.

The Armata would be pretty boss if they managed to develop something similar.

They don't have the helmet based interface but they have one based on a touchscreen.

Personally I prefer something like the Merkava Talmud Vision but sitting reclined as is in the T-14 it probably would be pretty hard to look around so a touchscreen is better.
For other tanks where you are sitting upright the helmet is much better.
>>
>>30254907
Wasn't the official MoD reasoning behind that touchscreen the whole "appeal to the ipad generation"?

I like the Centauro, but I dislike how it's basically the reason why Italy won't invest in a real tank that's better than the Ariete.
>>
>>30257793
Italy could really outright just buy surplus Leopard 2s that would be better than the Ariete.

the M60 would obviously explode the instant that a T72 was sighted
>>
>>30258827

no, the T72 would explode the instant the M60 saw it
>>
>>30258827
>>30258835
I think we can conclude the one that got spotted first would get exploded.
>>
>>30258858
That tends to be how it goes, actually. US studies figured out that whoever spotted who first was likely to win.
>>
>>30258858
>the one that got spotted first would get exploded

No, the one that sees the other one first would explode.
>>
>>30228320

I'm not sure how the dual-feed cannons work as far as changing ammo types but it could facilitate rapid ammo type choice or even two types of ammo being fired at once for better effect on target

>>
>>30258996

No dude, it's a mockup of a prototype of a thing that was never built. Dual cannons are extremely rare in the real world.
>>
>>30259008
Neither would explode because they'd both either break down, miss, or run away.

Hello /k/!

Would someone be so kind to explain how the BMP-1 autoloader works?
I'm very familiar with T-72/64 autoladers so is it vertical like the T-64/80?
>>
>>30259072
both sides would bail out and run at the first sight of each other, and then they would capture the opposing sides tank
