/MEG/ Military Enlistment General

OP template
http://pastebin.com/sb5Gv1dW

Before you ask a question, check the FAQ
http://pastebin.com/Rx0nDuga

Which branch are you enlisting/enlisted/considering?
http://strawpoll.me/4671253

Ask questions, answer questions, bitch about Air Force recruiters. Just keep it contained to this general.
>>
I was thinking of enlisting after college but don't want to go infantry(pog life is best life), and was planing on going into something that has job potential when I get out like drones or something. Is there any other fields that have that kind of potential?
>>
Last thread, there were a couple people talking about how "if you're drawn towards the military, it won't go away". Since then, I've been wondering if that goes for everybody who feels that way.

I am everything this board and these threads hate: I have a liberal political ideology, I wholeheartedly believe that homosexuals should be allowed to serve in the military, I am an atheist and I don't give two shits about the "holy land" Israel and think we'd be better off letting the entire Middle East kill themselves off, etc.

Despite all of that, I feel drawn to the military. Maybe it's wanting to make something of myself, learn discipline, and more, but how far are differences accepted?
>>
>>30156666
You already went to college man. Go infrantry.
>>

>I am everything this board and these threads hate
> I don't give two shits about the "holy land" Israel and think we'd be better off letting the entire Middle East kill themselves off

You haven't been here long I take it.
>>
>>30156761
Uhh besides being ultra liberal, im you.
I am pretty much in the middle politically, dont give two shits about gays (my nextdoor neighbor in the dorms is gay) and dont care about religion or israel. Yet here I am in the air force and noone gives a shit.
>>
>>30156666
Your best route, if you are in school, would be looking into your school's ROTC program. Scholarships and officer life

>>30156761
I did my stint in the Army and my views align with yours to a degree (disagree about middle east policy, some help against ISIS is required etc). If you are under say...24, enlist or if you're in school look into ROTC programs.

Any bros know if te current height and weight standard on military.com for the Marine Corps is correct?

I'm 6'4 (76 inches) and it says the max weight is 226 pounds for that height. I weight 235 give or take but I also lift weights.. I'm able to do the pull ups and push ups and sit ups and the mile and a half in inder 13:30..
I going to have to drop to 226?

And is there anyway to secure a 0311 contract when going active? I don't want to sign as 03xx and get tossed in a mortarmen crew or other shit. I want 0331 or 0311
>>
>>30157388
Those are the weight standards once you're a fleet marine. They have looser standards for joining because they know you'll loose weight in boot camp. Ask a recruiter.

You can get guaranteed Infantry, but MOS is determined at SOI ITB. So either you'll be a 0311 rifleman, or weapons as a machine gun fag, mortar fag, or assault fag.

Source: former 0311 riflefag
>>
>>30157470
Ohhhh thank you very much bro I was worried. How was it being a riflefag? And did you go to San Diego or Pairs island
>>
How to make rank while in Navy DEP so I go in as an E2 or E3? Anything besides referrals and college credits?
>>
If you don't try to become a warrant officer pilot, before settling on enlisting. you're an idiot.
>>
>>30157388
Army here. If you are past the weight standards, you get taped. If you don't pass weight and tape standards combined you cant join. The standards are massively out of date and stupid, but they are what they are. If you are a stalky/built dude you're guaranteed to get taped your whole career.

I dont remember the standards but a google search for "Army Weigh and Tape" should find them.

>How was it being a riflefag?

It's hard to summarize 2 deployments and 4 years of your life. I also joined in 07 so the war was still going on. Garrison blows, you'll rank up slower than pogs, you'll get to shoot a lot but also clean your rifle all day. I would be willing to answer a more specific question but that is too vague.
>>

Lel that's why I'm going Marine corps breh (;
>>
>>30157804
What rank were you when you got out? Did you enjoy the time in? How was boot camp did you get smoked by the DIs a lot?
>>
is the scope of a TS clearence investigation for an 18 year old changed at all? i cant imagine them going back 7 or 10 years
>>
>>30157827
I got out as a corporal. I served as a team leader during both of my deployments.

I treated my 4 year enlistment in the corps as an adventure. I was a young man and there was a war, I figured why not. So I went, learned a lot about life and myself. I have 3 or 4 friends that we still meet sometime, and the brotherhood we have from being in combat together is something that cannot be had easily. Didn't learn any job skills but I'm making my GI Bill work to my advantage.

I got smoked a few times. I would get bored during drill and fuck up, my drill hat didn't like that. Sometimes they just smoke guys randomly. I wouldn't worry about it though, if you go Infantry boot camp will be the easiest thing you do in the corps.
>>
>>30156761
I've served 8 years as an officer in the Army. I come from a very liberal town north and so my facebook feed is polarized by my friends back home and all the conservatives in the military. I believe in gay marriage, federal legalization of marijuana, etc. I've never had any problems with peers or soldiers.
>>
>>30156761
>I wholeheartedly believe that homosexuals should be allowed to serve in the military

There's not really much of a prejudice against this anymore. Especially nowadays in the Navy. Literally no one cares if you fuck chicks or dudes.
>>
>>30157540
I dunno about DEP, but once you're in boot camp you can pass a test on your DEP guide and so long as you pass the initial PRT, you get E-2.

E-3 can be awarded if you do a really good job at your recruit job or take leadership and do well.

Or just be a Nuke like me and have E-4 with less than a year in the Navy.

I currently am going to a community college for financial reasons. I was wondering if I enlisted if I could continue my education, as soon as I enlist. I live in Norfolk, Va. I want to become a Marine Officer. Obviously infantry is my first choice. My ultimate goal is to do it to try to make it to a Recon unit, MARSOC, FAST, or at the very least be a boat ho and do MEU. If you end up as an infantry officer with the Marines, is there much you can do to end up in an expeditionary unit and get stationed on a boat? Also, what is the process like for becoming an officer in Recon?

FAST sign up for 5 years instead of 4. They go through ITB trained as an 0311 instead of going to MCT. At the end they go watch nukes and play on their phones and watch Netflix for 3 years. Then they get kicked to a line platoon their last 2 years as a corporal who knows less than off than PFC schmuckatelli.

No it's not a ticket into SF, I was a line grunt and we all think they're a joke. Disregard any high speed turbo pog that tells you otherwise.

So I put in my online application to the Navy like a week ago, still haven't heard back from a recruiter.

Why are you joining the military again?

>Col. Eugene Marcus Caughey, currently assigned to Air Force Space Command at Peterson, was charged Dec.10 with rape and assault at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, after in late 2014 or early 2015 he allegedly used “unlawful force” to hold the victim “against the wall and floor” while committing a sexual act, charge sheet documents reveal. He was also charged with various acts of alleged misconduct — which includes taking photos of his genitals while in uniform — dating back to 2013, according to his charge sheet.
>Caughey, a 23-year Air Force veteran, allegedly committed six counts of adultery between 2013 and 2015, in violation of Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. One charge with two specifications in violation of Article 133 of the UCMJ, conduct unbecoming of an officer and gentleman, states that Caughey took a photo of his genitals while in uniform in his office.

Caughey has been charged with unlawfully groping women on two other occasions, according to court documents.

Caughey, formerly second in charge of the 50th Space Wing at Schriever, is a survivor of the Sept. 11 terror attack on the Pentagon, according to a Schriever release.

I'm not saying don't join, I'm saying if this is something you want to do be proactive. Don't sit and wait. Put YOURSELF out there. Talk to them face to face. This is your life, you need to take control of it. Sitting around waiting for a response to an online "application" isn't helping you achieve your goal of joining.

This is from memory some years ago, but I believe you can't earn FLPP in the Army until after AIT- for a 35M that's at DLI (humint school at Huachuca is first) and for 35P it's after Goodfellow. Also, I think there was a limit on how many languages you could get paid for. Again, I think that's how it was when I was in, the criteria could be different now.

What m8? Are you talking about is it easier for enlisted men to get into an 18 series Mos compared to an officer trying to get 18A?

The pipeline for enlisted men to get an 18 series Mos is different than officers. Not sure if the still do 18xrays (off the streets) or if it'still strictly prior/current service only. Either way for enlisted you have to be in for a while and you will be eligible to put in your packet, e4 or e5?

The officer route for 18A is at least captain promotable? To be eligible.

I knew an o3 who was talking about resigning his commission to try to gopen so and hopefully 18D. And another who was an 11 series WO and made it through the pipeline.

Yep you can have pretty much anything you want. You get quite a bit more free time and depending on your AIT and MOS you can leave base on the weekends and after 1700 when the duty day ends. What is your MOS and how long is your AIT? Depending on your length of stay you get certain extra privileges as well

Alright /k/ommandos I have a sort of shitty plan that I have no Idea if it will work out and I need help because I might be retarded.

So initially, I plan on going to the Chair force academy, don't worry about this part (I have connections) and once I get in attempt to go for pilot (prefrebly f35s or f22s) Now if for some reason I can't get a waiver for my lasik and they disqualify me I'm going into it as an academy and doing something in the intelligence sector. The only reason I am doing this is so I have a good looking college degree for the military private sector.

From here is where I'm confused

I want to go to the FFL, and after 4 years leave, reason being I only want this as experience that looks good. From here I don't know what to do but my end game goal is to make money as a private contractor.

I will do anything and everything, just throw some ideas at me.

>>

Not necessarily easier as you put it, the pipeline is just much different. Officers in SF can only be on a team for so long before they get rotated out. It's a weird system. If you want to be "doing work" (wink wink), go enlisted.
>>
>>30162022
I remember a couple of threads ago someone asked a similar question. Basically, 31k is a based mos but the slot is extremely rare. I'm talking like 5 every 18 months or so. If you really are considering it, start planning now and around the fiscal year date.

Where do I start?"

What are rates in the Navy? Basically the equivalent of an MOS?

Is not having a rate, or being needs of the Navy, basically meaning you go to where you're ordered to do basic labir and work? Like chipping paint and serving schloop in the chow hall?
>>
>>30168948
Rate is basically rank+occupation. Like an E4 who works as a radioman would have a rate of ETR3 for being an Electronics Technician (Radio) and a Petty Officer 3rd class.

If you're PACT, you can eventually get the chance to strike at a certain rating you've worked with.

Technically anyone below E4 doesn't have a rate in the Navy, but that's not really the same as being as undesignated as PACT.

At least, I think that's how it goes.

I might've believed you, until this part. ETR exists currently as one of the 4 SECF rates. It's slated for a merger with ITS in a few years, but it's still around for the moment.

ETR is pretty new, it was pulled out of ET less than a year ago along with ETN and ETV. It probably didn't exist when you were in.

And like I said, lacking a rate because you're below E4 is a technicality thing.

Contracting
Space Systems Operations
ATC

Why would you want to be separated from your family for months on end and even have the chance of dying for a false sense of pride. How can you take pride in knowing you strive to be a murderer? First decide what type of job you want, then decide on the branch. This is because the type of job you get will decide your fate far more than what branch you are stuck in. You gotta narrow it down more than that man. The military has hundreds of jobs to choose from. You don't have a degree, which means you'll be enlisted. Of course your job will suck, that's why you are enlisted.
>>
>>30181267

Enlisted with a degree, got out after four years and now making more than any of my officers who are still in.
>>
>>30181125
Please don't come at me with that bullshit.

Just a suggestion, it seemed pretty sweet from my point of view.

>Of course your job will suck, that's why you are enlisted.
This is completely untrue. Seals dont have degrees, you saying there jobs suck?
>>30181309
What bs? You mad cause it worked out great for me and you are still a huge faggot whose probably been posting here for years but is to afraid to serve?
>>
>>30181350
that does seem pretty cool

>>30181306
what did you do?
>>
anyone gotten a weed waiver recently? what would cause a waiver to be denied?
>>
>>30181415
>what did you do?

Got good at some extremely specialized intelligence work, got a Master's degree, and ended up being very marketable as a contractor. I'd like to say I planned it out from the get-go, but the truth is it just kind of fell into my lap.

If I had commissioned there's no way I would have ended up where I am now at age 27. Officers don't have the opportunities to do hands-on stuff that enlisted do, but commissioning is a very safe way to a stable upper middle class life followed by a comfortable retirement.
>>
>>30181542
All of this is true. The military can set you up like you wouldnt believe. Being enlisted gets a bad rap cause there are idiots in the military just like in every other facet of life. As long as you go in with a plan you can get ahead in life pretty easily.
>>
>>30181542
did you get your Master's during or after your enlistment?
>>
>be conscript
>military tells us that our military service provides valuable experience and we will have an edge when when we apply to civilian jobs compared to those who didn't serve
>finish service, get out, try to get a job
>not a single employer gives a shit
>when i mention my service, recruiters usually express polite disinterest, they only care that i have finished my obligations and aren't dodging the draft
>use examples to show that i learnt teamwork, leadership skills, etc while in the military
>literally nobody cares
>actually had recruiters tell me they would rather hire fresh female graduates than a male graduate with military service experience because the females would be younger and wouldn't need to take time off for reservist training

Why is military service so undervalued?
>>
>>30180941
Well I did track and wrestling, now I run at least a mile to the gym, lift, then swim, then run back

>>military tells us that our military service provides valuable experience and we will have an edge when when we apply to civilian jobs compared to those who didn't serve
Being a grunt does not give you valuable experience in the civilian world. You have to do something like EOD/Combat Engineer, sniper school, shit like that and other more POG positions to actually get useful job skills.
>>
>>30181718
then why do infantry officers and NCOs find it so easy to get jobs in the civilian world?
>>
>>30181811
>why does 4+ years of managerial and leadership experience make finding jobs easier
Your average grunt was never in charge of ten or more people constantly. Officers have to have a bachelor's degree anyway (At least in the US military) so they're already fairly set.
>>
>>30181377
I'm not here to try and measure your e-dick, bud.
>>
>>30181867
>I'm not here to try and measure your e-dick, bud
Like i thought you are completely btfo and have nothing to say. Im not lying so theres no e-dick. Everything i said is true so you can keep shitposting in your late 20s pretending that someday you'll work up the courage and actually join. Protip that day is never going to come. You are always going to be a faggot. Drop dead and never come into these threads again bud.
>>
>>30181425
A waiver is just a piece of paper that tells them to deny you and nothing more.
>>
>>30181901
lmao cool it man. You're getting heated at me over 4chan.
>>
Will joining the military get me a gf and make me less of a manchild?
>>
>>30181857
Your average civilian is NEVER in charge of 10 people or more.

I was a squad leader in charge of twelve. Sometimes 30 as 1st squad leader when platoon Sgt was gone.

>>30181718
Lmao. First guy sounds as dumb as this pog.
>>
>>30181993
The problem with these threads is that most people posting and giving advice here are just like >>30181970, they pretend to give advice even though they are completely clueless, never served, and have their priorities out of whack.
>>
What bases are on your dream sheet?

Frankly, gays in the military is fucking great. It'll help break the stereotype within the gay community that if you like cock, you have to be a rainbow-unicorn-asshole-spreading-flag-waving pansy. Look at the Greeks: homosexuality =? faggotry. Sparta. Current Western gay culture is horrendously pussified. They could use some hard fatherfuckers in their midst--I can't wait to see combat-ready, open-carrying bears replacing the inferior blue-haired pacifists. Gay v. Lesbian war when?

But honestly, I'm CERTAIN psyop is at least partially behind this: they're essentially weaponizing potential anal rape. Roaming bands of heavily-armed, horny psychopathic faggots? IS would be shaking in its collective hetero-goat-fucking boots.
>>
What are the odds of getting accepted to the USAFA as an enlisted Airman? 1540 SAT (out of 1600) good physical condition, and will be taking college courses while in.

And yes, I've heard it sucks a lot of cock and balls, but I'm curious
>>
>>30182105
Who are you asking? What branch are you in cause thats kind of important.
>>
>>30182108
>Look at the Greeks: homosexuality =? faggotry. Sparta.
That isn't true. The relationship between an erastes and eromenos was more ritualized bisexuality, and the Spartans explicitly outlawed the practice.

>Current Western gay culture is horrendously pussified.
Gee. I wonder why.
