Hey /k/,
Looking to build my first AR. Just bought pic related and am looking to keep this build as economical as possible as I'm a poorfag college student. Was planning on ordering a complete lower parts build kit from PSA tomorrow then an upper, bcg when I can afford it. Really want to get this shit done before the election. Think PSA is a good choice?
>>
PSA is fine for a budget build. If you are going with them for the upper assembly, more so the barrel than receiver, I've heard it's really worth the extra money to go with their premium parts. If not I recommend AR15performance.com for affordable, quality barrels. You can usually pick up a 16" chambered in .223 Wylde (accepts .223 and 5.56) for about $150, $135 on sale right now, and the owner seems to really know his shit.

I understand the consensus is to largely avoid PTAC, but that most everything else will be fine. Customer service is excellent, use it if you have an issue. Their "blemished" stuff really isn't blemished, so get yourself some good deals. Sign up for their emails and watch the Daily Deals. Also, be aware that something on sale for a big holiday may have had a bigger sale earlier, or have a bigger sale later.

You really can build a good rifle from them for cheap. Just read reviews from other sites and watch the price history.

Yeah I'm going for a barrelled upper assembly. Mil spec everything. Thanks for the barrel recommendation though. Maybe on the next build.

Well, if you're up for ordering in the next 2 hours or so (deals expire noon EST), you can get a pretty good deal on Magpul furniture at the moment.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/moe-lower-parts-kit-black.html
LPK has free shipping there, but you do pay shipping on the stock.

Compare to
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-ar15-moe-sl-lower-build-kit-black.html

And compare to
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-ept-classic-lower-build-kit.html

Basically, you can get Magpul furniture for Mil-Spec price (just slightly less, considering shipping) right now. I lurk their site very regularly, but only purchase rarely (the frequency of marital sex is inversely proportional to the frequency of high dollar frivolous purchases, and I have my priorities), so I have a good read on their pricing.

Also, be sure to compare prices THOROUGHLY around their site. For example, a package containing both the $50 LPK and $30 UPK is $100. The LPK frequently geta a Daily Deal of Free Shipping, and the UPK commonly goes on sale for $30.

Looks like the weekend deals are going up. A bunch of dailys are still up, but it says right on the pic that the deal is expired. 2 to note:

$90 and Free Shipping for your mil-spec lower, non PTAC
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-freedom-lower-build-kit.html. I'd buy one myself, except I like wood furniture, which usually wants an A2 stock.

$90 for BCG and CH. No free shipping. To me in NH they're quoting $8.50.
http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-freedom-5-56-full-auto-bcg-with-psa-ar15-m16-charging-handle.html

Lowest the BCGs usually go is $70, and the CHs are usually $20, so it's a fair deal, but you may see better in the near future; thinking 4th of July.
>>
Might consider saving your dollars and hoping for some July 4th sales online.

Unless time is an issue.

At work at the moment but made good tips (restaurant) so will probably be buying the parts kit today after I go to the bank in a few hours. Pretty set on the PSA LPK for 90.

Palmetto has a $389 shipped M4 kit

says 449 when i looked

You just missed the Memorial Day sale. Might want to wait for the fourth of july sale.

Hello, anon. I build a lot of ARs, so here's a hint: until you're spending $400 on a nice Noveske or $250 on a Geissele you're paying for the name.

Buy an Anderson lower for $40. They're absolutely fine, about a year ago they had one batch with short 3/4" grip screws but even those were easy to deal with.
an $80 generic 5.56 or 300BLK barrel
an $80 BCG, Toolcraft > PSA
a $15 armorers wrench
an $80 lower build kit or a $45 LPK
a $50 stripped upper with brass deflector, dust cover, and forward assist
a $15 upper parts kit with dust cover and forward assist
a $12 charging handle
a couple more bucks for a barrel nut, gas tube, and gas block. Now would be a good time to suggest a floated handguard.

You'll also really want a set of punches, Brownells has an okay set for about $50. Do not get brass punches.

The biggest pain in the ass building a lower is the trigger guard pin. The bolt catch pin pales in comparison. You can skip that headache with a fixed trigger guard.

Use your punches when installing the two pins and be very careful with the detent springs. If you're careless they will expand and the detents will fly across the room.

If you have any friends/family that shoot ar's they will have a box of parts that will never be used again. This is as cheap as these will get, remember its a election year.
