Long range precision shooting general thread.

What is the best round past 1000yds?

What rifles do you guys run?

Any tips for a beginner? I want to win 1000yd matches and get into sniper school.
>>
>>30108158
Consider anything in 6.5 or 7mm

7mm Fuck you fan myself
>>
Generally, the bigger the round, the higher the BC and velocity, and the farther out you can accurately hit things.

I think the best you're going to get is 14.9 SOP.

If you don't want a 70 pound rifle, use 20/50 Anzio.

If you don't want a 50 pound rifle, use .375 Chey Tac.

If you don't want to spend 30 dollars a round on a meme caliber from a shit company, buy something in .50 BMG and enjoy your relatively cheap milspec ammo.

If that's still too heavy for you, .338 Lap Mag.

From there you don't really need specialized long distance shooting rounds.

.338 Lapua Magnum is big enough to hunt any animal on the North American continent and it's more than enough for competition at a thousand yards.
I think that makes it an excellent recommendation.
Of course .50 BMG is fun like a frolicking midget.
>>
>>30108300
Needless to say, OP will be unable to fully use any kind of rifle without practice.

Most rifles will outshoot you for a long, long time.

But yeah, I want to hunt deer from three or four miles away with a 14.9 SOP rifle with a state of the art computerized fire control system.
>>
>>30108324
>practice
Is shooting at a shorter range with a cheaper cartridge (or an air rifle) good practice, or is shooting long range with bigger cartridges a whole other ballgame?
>>
>>30108300

You know, if you have a barrel with a midget in it, and the midget runs out of the barrel to the target, wouldn't that be the most precise/accurate firearm in existence?

Midget-guided ballistics
>>
>>30108366
.22 will teach you the fundamentals without any risk of developing a flinch.

It's unobtanium now though. I think it still helps when you move on to bigger calibers, but at 1000 yard kind of ranges, you need to be able to estimate bullet drop and windage.
>>
>>30108366

you'd be better off spending the money on a quality long range marksman course
>>
>>30108366
Shooting is easy
Ballistic calculations make bullet drop predictable

I'm in central Pennsylvania, where do I find one of these without going .mil right away? I'm willing to travel a bit.

Any good reading materials on this?
>>
>>30108438
Ballistic calculations are easy, you can do them at hornady's website.
All you need is to know:
Elevation
Temp
Humidity
Bullet weight
Ballistic coefficient
Speed at muzzle (yes you need a chronograph)
Zero range distance eg: 100yrds
Maximum range
Prevailing wind info & average speed

>>
>>30112818
Say for an average shooter.
>>
>>30114325
"Penetration" is a weird thing, are we talking armor or concrete? or just bodies? different rounds do different things, and then whether its frangible or armor piercing adds a whole new mix. 5.7 is 'supposed' to be able to pierce armour and thats basically a .22 mag. and a regular .50 bmg taps out at 3/4in mild steel

Using felt recoil as a measure of penetration is retarded, in other words.
>>
>>30111982
Hard cast hand loaded 45-70
>>
>>30114735
A 50 bmg will blow holes right through 3/4 mild steel plate.
>>
>>30108390
wait up i think youre on to something.
What if we make the firing pin like a shot of adrenaline, so that the midget runs super fast and we cover them in like knives or legos or something that hurts when they impact

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dXvetFDX3A

Ball ammo isnt rated for anywhere NEAR 3/4 mild steel, even AP .50 bmg is only rated for 1in mild steel. Eat shit Gaylord. Do some research next time you go online.
>>
>>30114325
prolly bout .308 or if youre really used to strong recoil .300WM or WSM

How about Anti-Tank rifles. here is a 14.5mm Soviet anti-Tank Rifle. I assume it would do well at far ranges, because you do not shoot a fucking tank point blank.
>>
>>30118393
That was actually the idea, 100-300 yards was pretty much the max for this and even the it was used for APCS more than anything.

It was outdated for tank killing the minute shaped charged and EFP made thier debut.

This, 6.5 CM is a pretty outstanding short action cartridge for longer ranges. I'm seriously considering a Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 CM.

Creedmore is cheaper and lighter set up, and likely will do just fine for 1000 yards.

.338 is spendy, heavy, recoils more, but has superior range and energy.
>>
>>30120370

Was posted on my phone (which has auto-correct turned off so i can search non-dictionary words)

It was a 750 amax handloaded fairly hot, at about 100 yards in my ex-bosses field.

I've got a shitty cellphone video of me shooting it, but no traces anywhere of the target. If you want to see it give me somewhere to send it.

...how well would .338 Win Mag do? I obviously have no experience with such, and wonder if anyone who does could shed some light on this.
>>
Probably best place to ask...

30-06? Yay or nay? Good and bad? experience or no? I see that it's an extremely popular caliber that's taken everything from deer to rhino, and I wonder about what it can do with modern powder and bullets.

I get that it's more than needed to drop a person, I just want to know more.

Didn't Ruger start chambering the American in 6.5 Creedmoor? If so, look into that. The only complaint I've heard about the American line is the stock feels cheap. Beyond that, they are consistently sub-moa in whatever they are chambered in, and 6.5 Creedmoor is a wonderful cartridge for long range.

I think you mean 338 win mag. Lapua Mag us special snowflake military round. 300 RUM has a flatter trajectory and is a cheaper hunting round but 338 win mag is by far the most common for long range civilian round.

I'm just thinking general cover into concealment, thinking a rifle you'd use to do slowly what a HMG would do quickly.

I don't actually know what I'm talking about, curious noob, please disabuse me of any bullshit.
>>
>>30121979
Max effective range is further with hand loads than .308. IF you understnad 30-06 better than .308 and have a decent 30-06 gun, don't bother switching, it's more about how you set up your charts and what not than performance of the rounds your using. *

* That being said, it's nice to have better bullets/ powders etc etc etc.
>>
>>30121979
There's a not-quite-proven-but-manufacturers-are-taking-it-seriously-anyway theory out there that the more "square" the casing is (the difference between the length and diameter of the casing), the more evenly the powder burns.

This was thought up as a way to explain why, during both military tests and civilian shooting competitions, .308 was consistently getting tighter groups than 30-06, even when using the same projectiles and similar propellant charges.
>>
>>30124918
That's why you get something chambered in 30-06ai it has a square shoulder. And gives a couple grains extra powder capacity. Then you just fire form from regular -06
>>
>>30125093
Not that kind of square. Nothing to do with shoulder angle memes. Overall length vs width of the cartridge.

.308's diameter is closer to its width than 30-06.

Top seems lazier (read: easier) but gives you less control over the muzzle flip than bottom.

i dont know why people care so much about muzzle flip on bolt actions, you have to cycle the bolt anyways, so youre probably not gonna stay on target perfectly anyways

Pics or it didnt happen you fuck, Ball ammo .50 BM isnt rated to go through 3/8, let alone 3/4. if you managed to get ball ammo through 3/4, while AP ROUNDS are only rated to 1 in and get stuck often, I applaud you. But first, show me proof, you lying fuck.

>>
>>30118851
One more point, I swear im only a littel autistic, you said you were shooting at harrowing discs, well I didnt know what the fuck that was, so I looked it up, generally made from 1050-1075 steel, (MIld steel is generally classified as 1005-1025) so a harder steel, and generally manufactured with disks ranging from 3.5mm to 8mm, or .137 in (A hair more than 1/8) to .314 (Lets just round up to 3/8 why not) so your anecdotal evidence of you and your friend shooting hot handloads of 750 grain amax, going through something that ISNT mild steel, and ISNT anywhere near 3/4s, totally stands up to y'know, actually shooting 3/4 mild steel with a 636 grain factory load.
