lol @ flowers being delayed. Turns out making a fully functional engine from scratch might actually be a little time consuming!

What the hell was up with that idiot throwing a tantrum about shills in the last thread?
>>

JAST is so weird about setting dates that they cannot possibly meet. I want to say they should just pick a date way in the future so that if they get it done before then they'll look better for it and they won't have to keep delaying games past the date they set. But then I think, setting dates like this is probably what keeps them going. They have to keep delaying things and it motivates them to keep working because they've got a date set, even if they cannot possibly reach it. If they set it too far ahead they'd probably laze about more and get even less done.
>>
http://store.steampowered.com/app/251290/

The longest VN ever written is now available in English for the very reasonable price of $30.
>>
>>14296670
Too bad it's not voiced at all, while the Japs just got a remake of it that's fully voiced.

>>14296477
Why do they need a new engine anyway? I know Doddler did one for KnS 2 but that's because it had some interactive parts to it. Still seemed like overkill though.

It's a shame that MG didn't do it themselves, seems like the translator for KnS 2 and Yuri Ghosts really likes yuri.
>>
>>14296747
Apparently there's no actual way to get the engine to work in english system locale.
>>
>>14296337
>Koichoco - Going through finishing touches

Haha. My "Update: no updates" actually prompted them to do a real update. Guess I made the right decision. You're all quite welcome for that. I am, in fact, the savior of visual novels.
>>
>>14296766
Can't they just make a wrapper around the game that opens it with applocale?
>>
>half of /vn/ is about KnS 2 crack
>>
>>14296747
Not voiced at all isn't quite correct. It has battle voices. They did a cool thing too, there's an unofficial patch for the Japanese voices on the internet and when you apply it, it actually becomes an option in the game. So they intended for people to do that even though they couldn't do it "officially."
>>
>>14296772
applocale is often pretty buggy and doesn't work properly for many games.
>>
>>14296785
Battle voices don't really count. I mean, there's a shitload of dialog in the game and none of them are voiced.
>>
>>14296791
The voices probably would have been ridiculously expensive to license and there's no way the game would have been profitable for them if they decided to do that. Anyone who cares is going to get the voice patch anyways.
>>
>>14296794
The voice patch is still battle voices only though, he's talking about full voice acting for story scenes.
>>
>>14296794
Remakes for FC and SC were released in Japan with fully voiced story dialog. They probably won't be patched in though.

And they can't get the license to other Falcom works either, which is unfortunate.
>>
>>14296806
What do you mean by other Falcom works? I was under the impression that XSEED has had very little problem with that, aside from Gurumin which Mastiff still seems to own. They're even doing Xanadu Next.
>>
>>14296820
I meant Japanese voice licenses. Their Sen no Kiseki is forced dub.
>>
The way I see it, there is no point to learning Japanese once the Horizon light novels are fully translated.
>>
>Hear about remake
>Look it up

Damn, wonder if XSEED might ponder porting the remakes too. At least on the bright side they wont have to translate all of the text again assuming the script is the same

Well, at least if I ever get a PSVITA and got that, I already will understand what is happening
>>
>>14296878
good thing that will never happen
>>
>>14296884
It's only impossible at the moment because the series is not yet finished. However, the translation is being worked on actively, so it is a guarantee that it will happen. Don't fucking underestimate light novel translations.
>>
>>14296670
It's a fine game but is no more a visual novel than Dragon Quest. I've played through it back in the day and I didn't notice it having that much more text than other JRPGs.

Most of that text must be item descriptions or something.

Every time someone pirates one of their games, money disappears from MG's bank account. It's no wonder they can't afford to have any marketing budget whatsoever.

Yesterday I was looking at various sources of VN news. I found out the following:
- Fruitbat Factory got the LB and Tomoyo After licenses.
- Eiyuu Senki to be released in less than two weeks.
- Sound of Drop was released.
- I saw a bunch of status updates for other Sekai stuff.
- Muv-Luv KS is still doing well.
- Zero Escape 3 got a name.
- A bunch of VNs are on sale on Steam.

Yet despite all of this, I did not even notice Kara no Shoujo 2 was released/about to be released (even if you ask me now, I don't know what the release date was). The only reason I even knew it was being translated, and the reason I now know it is released, is this very thread. Outside of this thread, I very rarely heard about it at all.
>>
>>14297405
>Every time someone pirates one of their games, money disappears from MG's bank account

Yeah sure, buddy. And torrenting is no different than mugging them at gunpoint and taking money straight from their wallets in person, right?
>>
>>14297437
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm
>>
>>14297437
I'm sure that was said tongue-in-cheek, but piracy does have some of that effect. Sure, there's lots of people who would have never spent money either way, but there's also plenty of people who have the disposable income to buy it but if they can easily pirate it, they'll do that. The only reason to purchase a single-player game is if you feel some moral obligation to support the developer.
>>
>>14297405
It's pretty depressing as the IG stuff gets so little coverage. Cartagra and KnS are the best games MG has released (or at least near the very top). KnS2 seems great from what I've played so far too.

Lets hope chuuni, moe or being a nukige are not requirements for games to do well in the west.
>>
>>14297453
>but piracy does have some of that effect
No. No, it doesn't. The money they have right now is not decreased in any way by people pirating the game. It can harm their expected profits, but it can never reduce their current funds. Instead of bitching about how they're missing 'potential sales' due to piracy, they could focus on increasing sales in other ways - for example, the much, much larger number of missing potential sales because they're not freaking marketing the game at all. The only people that even know about the game are pirates (and a relatively small group of pirates at that). How can you expect to get any sales that way?
>>

>Koichoco - Going through finishing touches
This can't be real.

This is pretty much the worst vn I've ever played.
>>
>>14297508
>That doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be released this month (if we find any major issues for example), but it does mean that there will be no more major changes.
So it is sometime between this month and never.
Rest of the post sounds like they have given up on it and just want it gone.
>>
>>14297539
I dunno, I played Cartagra before KnS and liked it more. I felt like KnS was too unfocused and the mystery was practically solved 2/3 of the way into the game, it was just a matter of catching the guy. The true ending was just utterly unsatisfying as well, and it felt like a waste of time going through a second playthrough just to see it.

I actually felt more closure about Kazuna's safety than about Toko, and that was only because I had played Cartagra and was attached to her character.

I also liked how Cartagra had more comedy and it was naturally done as well. It had its flaws with the little sister solving everything herself and the infodump of the true ending, but it was a satisfying read.

You're right. MG should just abandon their current non-all-ages audience, since so many are inclined to pirate and just focus on Steam, since those people actually pay money. People who don't pay have no right to complain because you're not a potential customer.

The visual novel boom in the west might start slowing down once Steam sales have finally stabilized.
>>
>>14298209
Part of the blame should be placed on all the shit vns and oelvns that have flooded Steam and convinced people that those are representative of vns.
>>
>>14298209
Winged Cloud flooded Steam with countless low quality crap so that is what most Steam users associate VNs with. Thanks to the retards who bought their games saying it's for the community. You just shat on your hobby.
>>
>>14298220
Maybe higher quality works being released on a regular basis might help salvage the situation, but yeah, the days a vn could easily sell 20k+ copies at full price are long over.
>>
>>14297765
MangaGamer's 18+ distribution store is quite important to MangaGamer, as it gives Japanese publishers a reason to go with MangaGamer. Compare to Sekai Project where the Japanese companies have found it trivial to cut out the middle man.
>>
>>14298261
Any Japanese publisher could just throw a vn onto dlsite or create their own website. And it took Koihime Musou a year to sell 2,000 copies, which included copies from its first hard copy run, so it's not like sales numbers on their site are all that impressive. 18+ patches are also becoming expected, so people don't want to pay extra for the 18+ content.
>>
>>14298243
What days were those? No VN over 20k did its sales at price points higher than $10. People buying Sakura Spirit, Nekopara, or GoGoNippon was never representative of sales for full priced VNs.

Are you sure you played the right game? There are lots of Legend of Heroes games. Sora no Kiseki 2nd is renowned for its absolutely absurd length, and no, it's not item descriptions, it's actual story text. It also has very difficult Japanese to translate, like 手工業の導力化は、労働力の集約を経ずして生産性を向上させ、中世的な職人組合を企業化し、多種多様な製品を安定して市場へ供給する体制を築き上げていった。 so that makes it an even bigger undertaking. And imagine bugtesting a game of this size. They have a blog post going into depth about that as well.

Found an image about the amount of text in this series.

Because if there's one thing everyone always says about Japanese games, it's that they're not needlessly wordy enough.

All JRPGs have gotten ridiculously bloated with bullshit in recent years. This one just happens to be slightly more bloated than others and took twice as long to translate.

Oh, so you really don't know anything about the series, because they are two parts of a whole. And yet you're trying to talk shit like the shithead you are.

>>
>>14298680
And nowadays, EVERYTHING is bloated with a ridiculous amount of text; Tales, Neptunia, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, etc. It's not that much text compared to JRPGs of recent years because they've nearly all gone the way of endless parades of 30 minute cutscenes. In the half-decade that it took SC to be localized, professional translators without mental problems and with more than fucking Recettear under their belts turned out two or three that much text.

And claiming that something is good because it has a lot of words is asinine on its face. Having a lot of words does not make something special, nor is it even noteworthy anymore.
>>
>>14298702
And you go right to ad hominem. Pathetic.
>>
>>14298739
Learn the difference between invective and ad hominem, dumbass. Feel free to look up the fallacy fallacy while you're at it too because your education is clearly badly lacking.
>>
>>14298738
You are seriously underestimating the amount of text in SC just because you think "those dang Japanese anime games are just too darn long!" Certainly, there are plenty of JRPGs with a lot of text. But this goes far beyond that. Name a SINGLE, JUST ONE, JRPG that beats the amount of text in the image in >>14298572. I'll wait.

Furthermore, I'm saying it's good from experience. Trails in the Sky is the quintessential example of how to write a story that has a lot of words but doesn't feel needlessly meandering. This is a game that shows exactly why it's good for JRPGs to have so much text.
>>
>>14298759

>>
So, think they'll consider porting over the remakes of Sora no Kiseki at some point? Or at least like, port over the improvements
>>
>>14298797
Pretty depressing that there are STILL people falling for SP's Vita version lies, even after all this time. I get it happening elsewhere because people are stupid, but you'd think people in this very thread would know better.
>>
>>14298806
With the revelation that those versions aren't by Falcom, I doubt it's worth doing. HOWEVER, if the games sell well enough that XSEED decides it's profitable, I would not be surprised if they tried to negotiate something anyway. They're certainly cool with porting over improvements - for example, Ys I & II Chronicles on Steam is a combination of all the best things from the different ports of that game to make the best version possible. It even lets you choose the art and stuff, so they could probably do that with Trails.
>>
>>14298811
It's okay though since Muv-Luv is horrible.
>>
>>14298805
>I did mean SC because we're talking about translated games.
We weren't, but your argument is equally retarded then, because all you're claiming is that it's the longest translated game. That doesn't address a single thing I've said. It's not twice as long as something like Tears to Tiara 2. It just took about five times longer to be translated.
>>
>>14298851
I wasn't claiming it was the longest one, just that there are VERY few that can beat it in length, so I challenged you to name one and prove you know what you're talking about. You're right, Tears to Tiara 2 is pretty goddamn long and it's a miracle it even got translated. But cases like that are exceedingly rare. Even still, you could make the case that the Japanese in Trails SC is far more difficult.

>>
>>14298868
You could, but since it continues to have nothing to do with what I was talking about, I don't know why you would.

Having a script the size of a dozen plus novels is common now. Five years ago, Dragon Age made the same claim that it was a dozen novels worth. GTA5's script is 3,500 pages long. Writing and voicing is cheap, so while games, especially JRPGs of the Namco and Idea Factory variety, can't dazzle people with gameplay or writing, they pad them out with bullshit. Using length as an objective metric of any kind of quality is bullshit.
>>
You know, Little Busters h-scenes sound creepy as fuck. Riki looks like he's ten years old or something. In the anime he even has one of the girliest female voice actors out there who has literally never played a male character outside of that one. Why exactly would I want to see that little kid having sex with girls who are probably twice his age?

Well, is it being published on Sony/PSN under Sekai Project or is Degica doing it? That makes a pretty big difference in who's actually in charge of the project and port.

They're also releasing the Japanese version on Vita in a few months, so it seems like they have the console port handled.
>>
>>14298908
They made an entire game solely for fucking Kud.
>>
>>14298905
Um, okay, but you realize Kiseki games actually have really good writing, right? And while the fact that they use complicated Japanese doesn't mean much on its own, it helps to show just how much effort they put into the writing. Also, neither Dragon Age nor GTA5 are Japanese.
>>
>>14298956
Doubt you'd have made it very far, considering how you type.
>>
>>14298920
quite impossible. vita hasn't even been cracked, how would they get the audio files? and then there's the issue of inserting thousands if not tens of thousands of them.

for reference, the F/HA voice project is literally recording each line through vita audio-out, manually cutting recordings into clips, and inserting code to play each clip at the appropriate time. trails fans are not that crazy

Vita's probably the one you want to get first because until you learn Japanese, you can play all the games that are in English since there's no region lock (PSP games too, though I guess you could also just emulate those right now). 3DS, you'd have to get a Japanese one.

You misunderstood dovac. He said that translators deserve 10c per character, not that that's what he's paying. He's also said that his teams 'enthusiasm' allows them to come in much under the normally required costs for localization. Or, in more natural english, he pays them considerably less.

That's very rarely the reason people play JRPGs anyway (although there certainly are JRPGs with interesting gameplay). Trails is the kind of JRPG you play when you want to sit down, crack open a bear [sic], and read for a while. In other words, it is practically a VN, which is why it has somehow managed to be the majority of the discussion in this visual novel translation status thread.

>fixed things

Yeah, now it's just terrible instead of completely unplayable.

I gotta give XSEED credit for sticking with this franchise. I don't think the first game sold all that well. They seemed to have improved sales with Steam and GOG.

Why are you such a negative Nancy?
>>
>>14300577
Why is Compile Heart so bad at programming, optimization, and game design?
>>
>>14300575
They're a cool company. They probably realized that it was unwise to expect much from PSP sales, especially once they started putting Ys and stuff on Steam and saw how much better it did.
>>
>>14300581
Because they pour all their resources into #1 waifu Nep-Nep.
>>
>>14300585
Then why are her games so poorly programmed, optimized, and designed?
>>
>>14300582
The first game is on sale for $9.99 at both places if anybody is interested.

Because you're playing them wrong. Read this helpful guide for more information.

Remember how Disgaea's director going over meant their games would start being good? And then he made Trillion and all expectations for that disappeared.
>>
>>14300616
Lol at anyone ever expecting anything good out of NIS.
>>
I'm surprised to see the Neptunia hate. You realize we're talking about Re;Birth and not the old games, right?
>>
>>14300637
Obviously. Are you?
>>
>>14300668
Yes? Neptunia is a weird series, it kind of got more chances than it deserved to make its games good, because apparently people will buy it no matter what, but eventually it got it right. Pretty nice that they actually cared instead of continuing to phone it in.

>it kind of got more chances than it deserved to make its games good,
Yep.

>but eventually it got it right
Nope.

>instead of continuing to phone it in.
The very picture of denial.
