Happy 12th birthday, Yume Nikki!
Happy omedetou, vomit-tan ^___^
>>15456009
Happy birthday
>>15456009
RIP Madotsuki. You're still alive in my dreams.
>>15456009
A day has passed only three wishes of a happy birthday, stayed dead Yume Nikki and fade into obscurity.
>>15457567
I blame myself. By the time I woke up it was already the next day in Japan and the evening for the Western hemisphere.
Believe, anon. Believe.
Sleep and dream forever my angel.
>>15456009
>12th birthday
First time i heard and played this game was two years ago. Wow, didn't realized how old it was.
Great powerful game.
Happy Birthday Madotsuki
this game made me reach happiness, and find my own personal /jp/sie.
thank you.
>>15457688
This game inspired me. I thought "Maybe I can finally kill myself too!"
I couldn't.
>>15457688
I've found my cute jaypeasy long ago, but getting close to him or even getting him to love me back seems next to impossible!
muri da!
>>15458265
Same.Pain meds and booze just made me puke everywhere. It hurt so bad.
>>15457688
I'll never find my own personal /jp/sie but good on you anon.
If I die will I be able to be united with her?
I thought we weren't allowed to draw Madotsuki with her eyes open
>>15460059
only if its crazy shit, should her eyes be closed, because shes dreaming
in regular circumstances, like vomiting, taking pills, and writing "LEAVE ME ALONE" on a piece of paper, her eyes can be open
Happy belated!
I find this game really relaxing. It can be a bit unnerving at first, but once you get used to it and understand that nothing in it can truly harm you the environments and music are really calming
How does a RPGmaker game with no clear storyline gain such a following?
>>15456009
12 years being inspiration to shitty RPG maker games. Congratulations, Madotsuki.
>>15460454
Cause it was weird and unique, and was the first of its kind back in the day.
My only regret is not learning about this game sooner, the hours I spent on it were wonderful, I wish I could relive those moments again
>>15460722
I do think it would have been nice to have played it "alongside" most others here would have been wonderful, but playing it at all was still a great experience.
>>15460722
>you will never play yume nikki for the first time ever again
>you will never walk through the spooky woods and discover pic related while you're alone and it's late at night for the first time ever again
>you will never experience UBOA for the first time ever againMy only wish is to forget, only to remember again.
My favorite "level" in the game.
It feels kind of lame to feel nostalgic about a game that I played alone, and when the internet felt obscure/cool.
>>15460751
This is what gets me playing the (not shit) fangames.
I love exploration and discovering places in games, but it's really criminally underused.
My 2nd favorite piece of art ever
>>15460972
>I love exploration and discovering places in games, but it's really criminally underused.
People that value exploration generally seem to be a minority, and from a development standpoint it takes a lot of time to build a world worth exploring.
You may be familiar with the "Killer vs. Explorer vs. Achiever" gamer type thing, but if you're not here's a wiki for it:

The original write-up is here in its 90's website glory:

Happy late birthday, Madotsuki!
You are cute and so are your dream friends!
>>15461156
Sabitsuki a cute.
A CUTE.
>>15461158
>>15461166
Best fangame. Still haven't played 2kki, though.
>>15461177
In a nutshell, 2kki is "Yume Nikki, but more of it." A LOT more of it. Probably over three times more.
The game is still being updated every now and then and I still find new things every time I go exploring. I really cannot properly convey just how enormous 2kki is.
If you ever feel like getting lost in dreamland for a few hours, 2kki is the game.I love it to death.
>>15461210
Yeah, I'm interested. Honestly, the only reason I haven't played it yet is because a while back I desperately tried to get it running properly to no avail, and I got frustrated.
I think I know the fix now though, so I will give it another go soon.
Happy birthday my love. I know my heart grows cold but you were always there for me, even when I wasn't there for youI am sorry.
I've always loved this game because of how sincere it felt, it wasn't trying to be dark horror or tryhard surrealism yet still managed to invoke both while feeling incredibly melancholy most of the time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M0bjfoNdfM
Happy birthday!!
>>15461033
This is interesting as fuck, thank you. I have no idea which category I fit into though, the test says explorer which I think is fair but I have an obsession in multiplayer games for winning.
12 years? Madotsuki would have been a beautiful young woman at this point. ;_;
>>15461638It's better this way.
>>15460059
[Dang it, didn't mean to bump with a short post, guess I need to add more now]
The pic in OP is the mall roof. The black cat is a dead giveaway.
Are there any other games that made you feel a similar way that YN did for the first time? Not counting the fan games, of course.
>>15462425
LSD Dream Emulator, Kairo, Gyossait
>gyossait
Oh shit I thought I was the only one that remembered that game. That spritework, man.
Never heard of Kairo though. What's it about?
>>15462583
Also The Void
>>15462591
Screenshots convey almost exactly what it is, a 3D surreal puzzle/explorer thing. More abstract than dream-like though.
>>15462425
The Mother/Earthbound series. Especially 1 and the end of 2.
I never got into the game, I just played it a few times, three times if I recall correctly and in each of them I didn't pass the five minute mark.
I didn't get it.
>>15462646
If you're not into games that are heavily focused on exploration and not much else, it can be quite hard to get into.
What I always tell people who are trying to get into YN but are having a hard time is to play it when they are tired, specifically in that stage of sleep deprivation where you feel kind of drunk, as it enhances the experience. In addition, make sure to play it when you are alone and it's dark in your room.
Oh, and get the bike effect as soon as possible. Makes things a lot less tedious.
>>15462646
Perhaps look at the beginning of a guide to get you started. A lot of it's bewildering at first, but after a few effects and some basic memorization of the levels, it gets better. At least it did for me.
>>15462654
>>15462688
I'll try that, thanks bros
Happy birthday Madotsuki
Obligatory.

I wish I could go back to my yume nikki days, i'd argue that they were my prime
>>15462800
The first time I played Yume Nikki was during some of the best years of my life. I wish I could go back too.
>>15462795
>Obligatory.
No, it's shit.
>>15462806
You're are a shit dude.

I love fan art in this ( >>15462789 >>15462838 >>15462654 ) style.
>>15462848
Me too, I'm a sucker for bright and abstract art.
What do you guys think of weird western RPGM games like Middens?
>>15456009
Why do cute girls have to suffer?
This is one of my most favourite illustrations.
>>15462879
Art that captures the scenes of the game is god-tier.
>>15462874
Makes them cuter.
I'll see you later /jp/.
>>15462891
>tfw no ryona doujins on panda
I miss Yume Nikki. Wonder what became of the creator.
>>15462926
Almost all of this dude's entire gallery is dedicated to ryona, if that brings any comfort.
>>15462937
I'm pretty sure he's alive and well, considering he occasionally endorses fan-made YN stuff, and there is an official website where he sells merch.
What I find more mysterious is whatever happened to LcdDem's creator. That shit was weird. But it does kinda makes the game more enjoyable for me.
I hope I'll be able to finish my dream exploration game someday. I think you would like it, /jp/. It's just taking a very, very long time to make as I'm trying to use as much dream content as I can while making the areas feel natural and not empty while minimizing the amount of filler, non-dream content.
>>15462986
Cool. Got a link or a name so I can keep track of it?
>>15463001
Sorry anon but not yet, it's still in its very early stages. Right now I'm making rough sketches of the areas so I have something to work from later on and it's taking a very long time making them. It's weird, I can visualize most of them without issues but it's a little hard translating the memories into physical illustrations.
>>15463057
I see. Well, here's hoping it'll be good.
>>15463097
Thank you, I'll try my best.
>>15462869
Middens and Gingiva were great. The creator's collage art is pretty good too.
>>15462986
Just remember to take it easy. /jp/ projects are volatile and burn up pretty fast.
I kind of hope for some sort of community-wide project to appear one day, but I don't know what could be done. This goes for anything, not just a YN-like game.
With the power of /jp/s NEET energy we could rule the world.
I like playing Yume Nikki because I never remember my dreams, and when I do they're fucking retarded, so it's kind of like dreaming by proxy
>>15464215
You too, eh?
Yume nikki was so cool back then. I remember posting theories and stuff back on uboachan. Happy late birthday, yume nikki.
Keep being mysterious.
>>15462949
Wasn't his website inactive for 8 years then deleted?
Why was Yume Nikki kill?
>>15464215
I find it easier to remember my dreams if I simply tell myself I WILL remember my dreams right before I go to sleep. Also, writing them down as soon as I wake up helps a ton and makes me dream much more often, for some reason.
>>15465439only way to escape
>>15464906
Kikiyama's? It's was still up last time I checked.
The website for LcdDem's creator was deleted right after he uploaded that strange message, though. I wonder what was the deal with that?
I guess we'll never know.
>>15465458
I want to believe the theory thatit was a dream within a dream, which is why the bloodstain was surrounded by those two jellyfish things.
>>15465683
But that would mean Madotsuki was never able to escape her horrible dreamworld.
Do you want her to suffer that much, anon?
http://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/ゆめにっき派生
Neat, this is still around. Posting just in case someone doesn't know about it yet feels like playing the fangames.
>>15462949
It's such a shame too, the main character in that game was adorable.

What do you mean? If it's just one big dream then she wouldn't be stuck anywhere and would just wake up.
But, it's just wishful thinking. I just want it to be the case.
>>15456009
Holy shit time flies by, I only discovered it about 6 years ago. I really wish he had made more stuff after that. Same for the demonphobia guy.
>>15467157
thanks!
>>15469310
Demonophobia guy actually made a sequel called Xenophobia. Haven't played it yet though, so I don't know if it's any good.
>>15468960
I really am curious as to why he did that. Was it because he was ashamed of the game? Maybe because he drew inspiration for it from a traumatic event in his life? Or perhaps he just wanted to make a weird little publicity stunt?
The world may never now.
>>15469236
I mean that even after attempting to kill herself by falling from a high building (which as we've seen before does indeed wake her up back into the "base" dream world, as shown in the mall rooftop event) those strange jellyfish creatures are still present, which would mean that not even death would allow her to escape the world she clearly doesn't want to be in. She's still stuck in her never-ending dreamland.
Poor Mado.
Sudden urge to play this again, any particular place to download? Its been years.
>>15469871
Just go to the official Yume Nikki Wiki, that place has all the stuff you need.
And after you are done with YN, go to the YN fan game Wiki and explore the literal dozens of different fan games.
It's a wild ride.
>>15469893
Wiki's got the links? Great.
I dunno about all the fangames though, last time I tried to play the one about the painting girl it felt a little too forced.
>>15469902
You mean Ib? That's not exactly a fan game, but it certainly drew inspiration from YN. Did you play it all the way through? Most people think it's quite good, myself included.
If you are looking for good, actual YN fangames, then you should try the top 3: .flow, Yume 2kki, and LcdDem.
>>15469793
I honestly doubt it's the publicity stunt thing. This wasn't the first time he seemed dissatisfied, or even ashamed of his works to the point of simply erasing them without more. Even so, this situation has been the worst one so far.I hope he's okay.
>>15469932
It makes the game more enjoyable for me to play, to be honest. Spices it up a little with some spooky real-life mystery.
>>15469776
it's not finished, he's dead or something, I'm not kidding
>>15471479
Wait, really? First time I've heard of this. What happened?
>>15469902
Start with .flow and Yume 2kki, which are the most well-known ones. I can't really give opinions on the other ones because the only I've ever played was LcdDem, but RIP.
>>15462800
Same. I was ~19 then (30 now), I used to be so full of hope for the future. The years have really flown by.

This thread was more successful than I was expecting to be. It's good to see.
If you could ask Kikiyama one question, what would it be?
it was shit desu. i didnt enjoy it one bit.
I'm late to the party, but Yume Nikki brings back such memories for me. It was comfy waking up in the morning and listening to some songs from Yume Nikki before the sun rose. Yume Nikki was an amazing experience for me, along with when i got into Osamu Sato's arts and games, along with his music. I kind of wonder how the creator of Yume is doing.
>>15469932
I never dove much into that, but he did want all of the fanart related to his game and everything gone. I knew about it because of something i saw on the Dream vs Dream project forums.
>>15479342
"If you could make any changes to Yume Nikki, what would they be?"
Or something along the lines of "exactly what inspired you to create this game?".

I think it's better if we don't know anything about the motivations behind the game.
>>15481313
"Family Life"
>>15481313
Nah. The less we know the better the game is.
The sense of "what the fuck is this and why is it here" is what got me to adore this game. Its abstract art done right.
And i typically hate modern art.
This is one of my favorite pieces of YN fanart. I know that I'm a few days late, but happy birthday, Yume Nikki!

Has anyone played while on drugs? How was it?
>>15525579
Well I haven't played it on drugs exactly, but one time I played it when I hadn't slept for like 27 hours.
It was an extremely surreal experience. Very hard to describe with words.
There were several points where I literally could not tell the difference between reality and the game anymore, and I couldn't sense if I was actually just dreaming or not. It definitely enhanced the experience for me a thousandfold.

I'm planning on it when I have the chance next week. I played yume nikki before I ever tripped on DXM, but I when I played it, it was strikingly similar to my experience with DXM.
inb4 lol coughsyrup burnout
It's cheap, accessible, and very much mind-altering in its own right. At the moment I have access to nothing else. I don't abuse it very much; once every few months. I'm working up to a DXM/LSD/DMT combo trip
>>15528253
Try mixing DXM with weed. It's dangerously loud. I dont know what youre talking about though DXM is expensive out the ass, the only plus side is you can steal it. When I have the chance I'm going to play stoned next week as well for the first time.
I'm very high right now. Name the trippiest Yume Nikki variant.
>>15528643
DXM is far cheaper than "illicit" drugs, at least relative to the rate at which I consume it. The hardest part is finding a drug store that has DXM-only pills or gels in stock; I can't stomach drinking enough cough syrup to trip anymore.
Marijuana is my go-to moderator for trips of any kind. At the moment, though, I have no way to get ahold of it, and I am a little scared of going to high doses with DXM without it. I did find a baggie full of some sort of neutered, non-addictive non-diazepine anxiolytic medication (buspirone) on the street the other day that should help me snap out of it if things go bad, though. I ate two and a half pills of it earlier while sober, and it just made me dizzy and very sleepy, so I suspect if I need to eject I can just take a few and pass out. That's not nearly as fun as smoking to relieve my nausea and continuing on while baked, though.
>>15528651
Probably the deepest areas con 2kki.
>>15462425
IB
The game is more straight forward and has a linear plot but it gave me Yume Nikki vibes and not just because it's an RPGmaker game.
>>15496605
>>15497877
Pretty much what that guy said.
It's noticeable how Madotsuki never reacts to everything. You may walk her through her dreams, but she never shows any emotions or reacts really. Like you wouldn't ask a window what it thinks about the things you see through it, same here is that the act of defining meaning is on the player alone.
On another note, I'm not even sure if Yume Nikki is a game. A game needs rules, you need to be able to win a game, or be able to lose it. But there isn't much of that here, you can't 'lose' and I don't know if the ending means you win. Not even sure the game ever says to collect all effects and then...jump. The ending is, simply the only way to end it. If you get caught by Toriningen you just get brought to a place you can't walk away from, you can just wake up and continue. It's very depressing in many ways. You discard everything you collected in your dreams and kill yourself to end it. Or you can see it as leaving behind all the memories and traumas that did weigh you down and escaping your prison. The many ways to see things is very fascinating.
As someone who is generally not depressed, I think Yume Nikki does a tremendous job at showing feelings of melancholy and depression. The music that loops like an endless moment of suspense waiting to be broken. The vastness of the areas, with few things that wont interact with you giving off a sense of lonelyness. Everything is toned down, there are no jump scares (except maybe Uboa), it's not like gut wrenching sadness or depression that feels like it will murder you in a moment. Instead it feels like something you can live with for years, slowly eating away at you. Like not being sad, just not being happy. It is a special experience indeed.

Although the term has been bashed to hell these days, this fits the genre of "art game" pretty well, and Yume Nikki was probably one of the first completely intentional examples, along with earlier works like LSD.
Its very much like exploring an interactive, animated painting, as your ability to etch upon it is actually quite limited.

Haven't been to 4chan /jp/ in 3 years.
Who the fuck are you people and fuck off with your surprise boxes.
Playing through .flow for the first time. I like it.

a dream wasted

You're worse than them now.

My main issue with .flow is that is too dark and dreary, even by Yume Nikkie standards. Also, inevitable dead-ends where you know there will be a jump-scare, but there is nothing to do about it but wait.

DXM is actually very expensive compared to a lot of drugs, namely RCs. I couldn't afford using DXM much but RC dissociatives are like 50 cents to 2 bucks per dose.
Don't take buspirone like you'd take benzos holy shit it's a 5HT1a agonist, read up on your pharmacology a bit. It's more like SSRIs than benzos.

Some parts of Wind Waker. It had a considerable amount of exploration, and sometimes had nice surprises for you if you looked around.
To this day, Wind Waker is one of my favorite triple-A games.
I haven't had any dreams about exploration lately, I should work on having some. YNesque dreams aren't bad, at all.
If you want a real life fun walking experience though, I recommend the seven mile bridge in the Florida Keys.

>Wedding ring
>>15532183
Like modern art has tons of pretentious shit, there are a lot of bad games that use the label of 'art game' that have no depth in game, story or mood. Often just there to put out a message or to popularise the maker. Yume Nikki does stand out much from those. The humble nature of the creator helped and I doubt any other game can show those feelings like Yume Nikki.

If Yume Nikki is a dream, .flow is a nightmare. Like how the weapon you get is blunt and brutal.
>>15536075
I never noticed. You, sir, are vastly superior to me.
>>15536075
who wears a wedding ring on their middle finger?
>>15536934
Yeah, let alone a plain silver one. Seems more like a generic ring than a wedding wring, especially since there's no engagement ring either.
>>15537067
>>15536934
I took the photo in germany, we don't have a big focus on fancy wedding rings (since we removed the jewish diamond menace), so it could be a wedding ring. People also tend to wear it wherever they want. Could be also just a simple ring rough.
Why does most fanart involve the knife? I like the umbrella much more, maybe because it's the first effect I found.

Pretty much the only things that lets you interact with the world I guess.

I spoiler'd an actual story spoiler, dummy.

There's still a chance that someone reading the thread doesn't know what happens in the ending.

>Yume Nikki does stand out much from those.
It does. However, that doesn't mean it evades classification.
>>15541246
It gives it a more gritty appearance maybe. It's also an effect you can use on most things. Kinda like a metapher for reacting with violence to lonelyness and depression. There is also the thing of stabbing things to death in your dreams.
I think the weapons in the big yume nikki type games do in part represent the atmosphere. A kitchen knife is like the easiest and simplest weapon you would find at home, also easy to use and if I remember right these kind of knifes are often present in pop culture to either kill yourself with or perform a revenge murder or so. The steel pipe of .flow is blunt and brutal, fitting the gore and grim atmosphere. Yume 2kki has a chainsaw which is over the top and in line with the crazyness and massive scale of that game.
