Yes and no. Most early quests you can just move your friend's or stranger's over-levelled unit forward and have him tank every enemy on the board and single-handedly clear the stage for you no problem.
However they then introduce enemy units that spawn behind you when your strongest units are far ahead, as well as tiny claustrophobic maps where all the enemies are immediately within range of all your units. Of course the AI is set so that enemies will target the weakest unit within range. Also you'll reach a point where levels don't matter and it really is about strategizing with units types, weapons types, element types, terrain type, etc.
There's also more benefits to fighting with your own units like how you progress their weapon level and can use stronger weapons which means that you won't be under-levelled later in the game. If one of your units dies in the game it won't die permanently BUT there's a risk of its weapon breaking AND there's a small risk of the weapon breaking permanently when you repair it afterwards.
So yeah TL:DR; it's really in-depth for a free mobile game. I recommend it even after the Dempagumi event is over

Pink is obviously the boss of her own stages, as are all the other dempagumis, easy medium and hard. I'm not a very advanced player nor are my characters very advanced (average level 40) and even at the hardest difficulty the enemies were only level 25.

I love the backgrounds for battles which is a huge chance of scenery from the usual post-apocalyptic gloom and doom.

I'm also really glad that the units are purchasable with easy-to-get in-game currency, are are cheap as well. You got those from completing their own stages, and from PvP mini-games. So the Dempagumis are easy to get even for brand-new beginners.

Usually f2p mobile games, especially Japanese ones, will have that bullshit "summon" Gacha mechanic where you can throw hundreds if not thousands of dollars at the game and never get the units you want.
Anyways, I already got most of the Dempagumis and they're cute both in their 2D and 3D models.
They also have the real girls as their voice actors!
