When I was a young /jp/sie I thought I would one day go to Japan to visit real deal Japanese events where I would hang out with important people rather than a bunch of losers, but at some point I realized that I was one of those losers and gave up.

I've been to a few conventions solely to meet important Japanese guests, but as a whole they seem like social events.
I've had people in cosplay(and not) even approach me out of the blue to chat up with me and become friends, but I never cared for this. I'm not here to make friends, just follow the artists, animators, and game makers I adore.
If you want to make friends, or even get laid cause shitloads of girls come regardless to events and can be social, then you can do real well with this. Even jaypees could find an ugly girl dressed as one of their favorite characters to drink with for sure.
But I just go for guests, guest panels, and rarely merchandise (most shit is basic and overpriced).
Still have a good time though. Meeting your favorite doujin artists can be a really exciting experience. Especially if they sign your games.

Man, the rural midwest is surprisingly good for the hobbyist life. Cheap costs of living; only a few people to snoop around at your hobbies, who probably don't care; shipping is the same as anywhere else in the country; and usually you are close to nature, and the towns are aesthetically pleasing in a natural sense.
But for jobs and any sort of meeting, it is almost the worst in the developed world. Well, except Northern Scandinavia.
