From what I gathered, the preload becomes available on the 21st, and the content becomes accessible on the 23rd (in JST of course) so we'll see in 17 hours if Prelude and the themes get early access.
By the way, the themes' titles have officially been revealed as "Dynamic Theme F" and "Dynamic Theme T" which is good news as it was unclear if the themes would be dynamic or static. Also the filesize is just a smidgen over 25GB, which is considerably smaller than the 40GB+ estimates I was seeing, so that's cool.

It is about the size of a standard fight stick. The buttons are actually much bigger than the ones on a fight stick. It's called "mini" because Hori had also made a fullsize one, meaning, the size of the controller seen on the cabinet.
I've heard that the mini controller suffered from squishy buttons, or were at least less tactile than the full size one, although I'd imagine it's better than a PS4 controller. I haven't personally used one, and they're not cheap.

How has it worked in past games? Would completing song X unlock song Y and so on?

Songs are unlocked sequentially. Clearing a song unlocks the next one, clearing that unlocks the next, and so on. Standard on Normal unlocks, hard, Standard on Hard unlocks Extreme.
Modules are where it gets weird. 1st had unlocking criteria to meet for each module, doing both requirements unlocked the module. The requirements were usually like, get 100 combo, Clear Hard, Great Normal, clear 5 times, something like that.
Then they got rid of that and added Diva Points, which is like Miku Money. Clearing a song unlocked a costume, which could be bought from the store for so many DP. Some modules had other criteria like clear so many songs with a specific character, clear every song on Hard, play this song with this character in this module.
Now, I haven't played X, but it looks like they've done away with Miku getting DP and instead modules are unlocked via random drops. Also modules have "skills" and the whole system looks more complicated than it needs to be, so I'm hoping that since FT is supposed to be 1st-F2nd, they'll just use those systems instead of whatever is happening in X.

the original system where you meet the requirements to get the unlocks seems like the most rewarding implementation. if they had that, combined with diva points, so you could get specific costumes if you wanted would be cool.

Alternate is pretty much required for the more difficult extreme songs. For slower notes of the same shape I still gravitate towards right thumb but generally I alternate except for parts I know well/know that a break is coming.

For those of you who have worked with both Vocaloid and UTAU, which in your opinion sounds easier to get started with? From what I've seen on nico, well tuned UTAU sounds amazing, but most of them sound like shit, so I'm not sure if there is a lot of effort required to tune well.

As I understand it, you can get a pretty decent sound with miku and minimal tuning. A good 70% of producers that use miku probably barely touch the tuning settings. Utau on the other hand requires a lot of skill, but it's definitely doable if you just put time in it.

It looks like Colorful Tone has songs from Project Mirai, but it doesn't have all the songs from Project Mirai. Even excluding the Gumi tracks, a lot of songs from PM1, DX, and 2 aren't going to be in Future Tone, including, upsettingly, Ageage Again.
