First thing's first, I think this riddle is multi part with every paragraph being a new clue or next part of the riddle.

I think there's something to do with the fact that the image is comic sans(which I'm assuming is the key) with the only words starting with C and S in the first paragraph being 'carefully split sacrifices'.
So I'm guessing that I'm supposed to split sacrifices in to sacri fices.(just a guess supported by the heaven and hell paragraph) but that's where my imagination stops. No idea about anything past that.
>>
>>15347756
I thought it might have something to do with traveling along the keyboard, with the "lock" meaning the caps lock key.
>>
>>15348250
I like the caps lock key thing so I tried it out but got stuck.

If we interpret the lock as the caps lock and we know that the lock is "next up" then the "key" given would be the shift key. If we interpret the two roads as the two shifts then those roads are all of the the keys that you can press while holding down that shift with your other hand. (It can't be rows since they share a row and it can't be columns because both of those columns on the keyboard contain mostly functional keys) So if we decide to take the road that's "left", then while pressing the left shift, we would press all of the keys of rails travel segvkeb with our right hand. This results in ikll, an anagram for kill. That's all I've got. Since I don't know where to go from here, I'm inclined to think that this path may have been wrong from the start.

I read Umineko when it came out but never really searched for the truth. I was a goat, thinking the truth would be handed to me on a platter. I'm still not entirely sure about the truth to be honest.
Is it possible for me to solve it on a re-read? Is there even an absolute truth?
>>
>>15350296
There is. I recommend reading the manga for a re-read. The later episodes are much more explicit about the answers.

Same here! And that's the beauty of it.
Ryukishi has stated that mystery is a battle of wits between the author and the audience. So it also depends on if it's regarded as 'true' mystery or not. I guess it's all what you make of it. Like Ange learning to appreciate Maria's happiness when she first only thought of it as a pitiful escape from her mother's abuse. As long as you take something away from Umineko and enjoyed, that is the true answer.
I may be projecting a tiny bit[/spoiler.
>>
>>15350348
Thanks, but if it's possible to ascertain the truth from the original works, I'd rather work from there. I'm gonna sit down and read through the entire thing again, making notes.

>>15350370
This is why I love this series so much. A love letter from author to reader, the quintessential murder mystery. A battle of wits between Ryu-chan and me.
>>
Let's all just pretend Ryukishi makes another great WTC.
Higurashi was a psychological mystery.
Umineko was a deconstruction of a murder mystery.
Which animal will be crying for this next series that will probably never happen, and what kind of mystery/genre will it be?
>>
>>15350476
Higurashi was set in a secluded village. Umineko was set on an island. If I know Ryu-chan, any possible future WTC will borrow from some sort of Christie setting. A cruise perhaps, or a train journey, maybe an aeroplane. Maybe ......in space
>>
>>15350476
Isn't Hotarubi kind of a new When They Cry? Or maybe it doesn't count since it's When They Burn this time?
>>
Seacats threads are always good.
Now are there any mystery buffs here who can tell me whether a deconstruction of the mystery genre like Umineko was done before or since Umineko?
I'd always thought that Umineko was quite original with its writing and ideas, but I'm just wondering if something of the sort was ever done before or since.

It obviously borrows heavily from And Then There Were None, but books like The Mystery of the Yellow Room, The Hollow Man, and Rim of the Pit are also obvious muses here.

The discussion starts a bit acid, but both users settle down later on:

Rose Guns Days is unexpectedly good. Why is Featherine such a good writer?
>>
Why are Lambda and Bern weaker than Featherine if the former two are readers and the latter a writer? Readers have far more influence over a work than writers when it comes to things such as acquiring the material and, ultimately, interpretation of the material? Is Umineko just R07's way of lashing out against concepts like death of the author?
>>
>>15353249

The two are mere characters created by Featherine. They're also existences way lower than a reader even if they're capable of reading. I'm still unsure if Featherine is capable of reducing readers into mere characters of stories.

Ideally, readers hold zero influence to a writer no matter how much potential material they possess. You can't be a reader.if there's nothing to read, interpret and written in the first place.

By the heavens, Higurashi still sells a lot of blu-rays for a series that got 3 BD editions so far.

The upscaling is also pretty apparent in those by the way, and yet, still manages to sell more than Umineko's Blurays overall.

In any case, they only sold an opening and an ending for 12-13 volumes, so, it's kinda unfair to compare with Higurashi. If only we had an anime for Umineko...

inb4 higurashi adaptation still sucks, but at least is solid enough to pull it out.

>>
>>15350476
Fukuro No Naku Koro Ni, or, When The Owls Cry.
Set on a secluded snowy mountain, in some sort of resort. Think of all the snow/footprint mysteries it could have.

When the owls cry, no one will be left alive.
Hoo...hooo.....hoo..
>>
>>15361010
"...when I looked out the window from upstairs, I could see several footprints leading to the side of the building. Was there a window near there? The snow had filled them in enough to where I could tell they had been there a while. There were no footprints leading back from where they came."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinterkaifeck_murders
>>
>>15361010
I like this, its owls and looks like some spoopy night time mystery.

Instead of magic or humans, its more like, Supernatural (ghosts) or human?
>>
>>15361010
>>15361034
>>15361045
Exactly. Footprint in the snow is a classic mystery tool.
It could be set in a snowy resort or tiny snowy village. Owls are always great as they're quite creepy in and of themselves. There could be a legend where if you step out into the snow at night and you are spotted by a snow owl, you will be spirited away. Suddenly, people have been disappearing, their footprints ending abruptly in the snow. Their bodies turning up later in terrible conditions elsewhere. Were they spirited away by the evil spirits of the nocturnal snow owls, or is a very clever human exacting revenge and using the legend to make the people hide in terror? And if so, how did this person get the people out of the snow and murder them without being spotted, or leaving footprints or even a trace of blood?

C'mon Ryu-chan, get on this shit.
>>
>>15361207

>>
>>15361010
Banshee's Last Cry was like that.
>>
>>15361207
>>15361251
I might actually turn this into a short story now that I think about it.
It's hard writing a mystery though because you never know if the readers already have a good idea of how the mysteries work.

Can I ask, when you read about people's footsteps suddenly disappearing abruptly in the snow, and their bodies turning up somewhere completely different later on; what kinds of theories pop up in your head?
The obvious ones are that the victims never took those steps, it was simple the murderer wearing their shoes. Or perhaps if the people were spotted walking from a distance, the murderer had been wearing the victim's clothes and their face was hidden. What else can we come up with, /jp/? Let's write a murder mystery.
>>
>>15361396
a gigantic fishing pole with a people picker-upper on the end
>>
>>15361499
A pole that could lift people from the snow, handled by an ordinary human? I don't want to come across as hateful but that is very narrow-minded thinking. You'd be better off creating the fake footprint with such a device rather than fishing people out of the snow. Then again, I've never been a fan of elaborate devices being used in murder mysteries.
>>
>>15361010
This actually sounds fucking awesome. Pretty unique too.

>>15361010
Fuck, I want this to be a thing now
>>
>>15361207
Don't think and I totally disagree with the owls being related with the mystery. The cicadas or the seagulls were not related at all with the murderers.

Also the whole story theme was about being supernatural ghosts/curses or a cereal killer only. In higurashi, it was about a sort of religion curse tied with the God or Demons. In Umineko was about being a magic witch or a murderer.

I still would have loved if the space themed WtC only took place in space on a space station. I had a long time ago this huge theory about what it was about. Higurashi was straightforwards, Umineko was meta, and Ryukishi07 said he would never do another WTC. So why not do the opposite of meta, namely mesa, which means to go further into specifics about something. To go more detailed.

http://www.gwiznlp.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Whats-the-opposite-of-meta.pdf

Just think about it. Mystery detectives in space.
You can have the story become a Higurashi in space, with some people on the space station finding some ancient alien artifacts before everyone starts dying, thinking that they've woken up some old God.

I look forward to seeing what exactly Vespio is. It's by Ryukishi, so I would expect it to be a mystery of some kind, but at the ACen panel he said
>The 3rd world is a Call of Duty-like setting involving war. In reference to a previous panel, Ryukishi pointed out to the audience that “It’s not zombies, though, it’s aliens!”
so I'm not really too sure

What are the odds of this releasing as a VN.
I am not a fan of a manga format.
>>

Only the trailer chapter 0.

Of course this theory was when only TRI was announced as the next WtC without the name back in 2013 or so. To me, it made sense too. Mesa being detailed, and sci-fi is all about the future being plausible.

>>15370201
>That's not true
That was a long time ago, after he was burned out from Umineko. He said he wanted to expand and do something new and not do another WtC, joking that ''he hadn't though of an animal yet to cry'.
>>
>>15372852
It's not impossible. Higanbana was originally a manga, which he then turned into a VN. I guess we'll have to wait and see

I might be wrong, but I don't think TRT has ever been referred to as a WTC. It seems to be completely unrelated as far as I can tell

We don't exactly know if any part will be unrelated to the WtC universe. We'll just have to wait and see when it's released.

I don't know how the heck my thought process works.

So I started with looking at the "rails travel segvkeb" part. So since they're rails they I drew lines through the keys that correspond to segvkeb and whatever letters go between them (only crossing out those nearest to each other) and the 'e' in the image being where the railroad becomes an intersection (just a hunch) I erased those parts because the truth only appears when I do sacrifices or something and what was left was the Alphabet (uppercase and lowercase, excluding the numbers and signs) split in two and 'TU' being left in the space between. I did the wrongest thing I could and drew a line from the 'TU' to the 'R', and 'h' letters on the left side (letters for Truth) and then drew a line from the 'TU to the 'H', 'r' and on the right side. The line went through S also, though so I don't know what to do after. (this is probably the wrongest answer he'd get anyway)

The experience was fun at least.

What is in the Himalayas? Would it be called 'When the Alpaca's cry'?

It should take place in India. The best place to dispose of a body is the Ganges River. People dump their loved one's corpses in it when they can't afford a full cremation. Corpses floating in the water is so common that people who have no other choice bathe and brush their teeth in the same river.
Maybe that would be too easy of a solution for hiding a body. It could work as a red herring, I suppose.

Rei and Kira were OVAs with few episodes, so it's understandable that they would be better. The original anime is really bad

I doubt they'll make a remake though, since they already adapted the whole VN. It's pretty rare for complete adaptations to get remakes. At most, we might get a new OVA based on some of the extra arcs or something like that

Remember the very first episode of Umineko? Just before the typhoon hit the island. The cousins and Shannon were at the beach, talking happily and teasing each other. "hope" was playing in the background and you could hear the sounds of the waves. Everyone was smiling and having so much fun.

How about the time when everyone arrived at the rose garden? They marveled at how beautiful the roses were swaying in the wind. Even the adults who came to the island for the sole reason of splitting the inheritance were able to honestly enjoy this beautiful days.

I miss all the happy moments in Umineko. Why did the sad witch have to take them away...

Both from the younger generation looking like their counterparts, Beatrice/Kinzo relationship beginning where Beatrice and Battler's ended, Beatrice begging for Kinzo to stay with her on the island until her time comes to be sent back to Italy while he subsequently whisks her away to Niijima on a boat, Beatrice telling Battler to leave her behind on the island whilst he ignores her and takes her away by boat.

>Has anyone found anything even remotely as satisfying as When They Cry?
No. Higurashi and Umineko are honestly my standard of judging if something is good or not. Did it give me emotional satisfaction and joy like WtC? No? Then it's shit. If it's on par, then it's alright.

You should really read RGD. It's a blast. It starts off really slow and boring, to the point where you wonder why you're even reading because you don't care about any of the characters. But once the first real boss shows up, shit gets real.
It's a really good straightforward shonen story. It's as if Ryukishi07 read all the criticism about him only relying on the false narrator and created a streamlined story. RGD is absolutely worth reading for the villain. They're all unique, interesting and great.

There's a part in Last Season where you'll scream and cry as hard as you did in the ending of Umineko's ep 3.

>Did Beatrice the first actually ever love Kinzo?
It's up to you to decide.
The story offers two possible extremes. In ep 7, it's romantically shown that Beatrice and Kinzo fell in love, shit happened, and without doing a single thing, Kinzo ended up the only survivor with Beatrice alongside a mountain of gold.
Later, Genji talks about how it's possible that Kinzo just killed everyone, kidnapped Beatrice, strapped her to his bed and raped her every night until she died.
Which story is the right one? People like to think it's the latter, since it's somewhat more realistic and less romantic, and because Genji is telling the tale, making it more accurate somehow.
But the truth is that it could be one or the other, and no one knows. We never saw Beatrice or Kinzo in the entire story. We don't know how they were when they were alive. Just stories told by someone else.
The truth is likely to be somewhere in the middle, or possibly one of the extremes is correct. The one you believe to be the most accurate to you is the correct choice. It doesn't have to be the right one, since no one will ever know, but the one you felt fit the most for Kinzo. Which is ironic since we've never really seen Kinzo, only his representation by other characters or as a game piece which can't be completely trusted.

So I guess Ryukishi07 was right when he said it was the next WtC in all but name.

I'm curious about the inclusion of the three authors. Apparently Romeo said that Ruykishi07 wrote most of the outline plot for all three stories and tried to write it all himself but it was too much work, so he asked for help. But I can't help but wonder if the reason he did that, other than because he needed help, was to make each of the three story have their own style.

Either way, I'm really hyped to see how it'll all be related. From what I know, each story are standalone but you can hop from one story to the other with that alice girl who may or may not show up in each of the stories. You have try and piece together the themes relating all three stories. It sounds like a very interesting postmodern work that uses the medium in an interesting way.
