Well?
>>
>>15334723
I'd probably throw the 4 or 6 man in vain hopes of suji and the 2 chance 5 man.

2m. How dead am I?
>>
>>15334723
No safe tiles. No big hints on what north could be waiting for either. It's possible he's waiting for something connected to 9m, like 5-8m. You could start by dropping 2m. It's efficient and somewhat safer than the rest of your options, because the 1-3m kanchan isn't possible. If it passes, you could drop it again next turn, as well, and hope safe tiles come during those two turns.
>>
>>15334723
3s. p got dora and m full dangerous.

And the result. I guess I should have at least thrown away a man tile instead of betting on terminals.
>>
>>15334867
While this isn't a hard and fast rule and it isn't always true, you should probably be wary of two areas when someone declares a riichi.

1) Tiles near the riichi tile, if it's a number tile, including its suji. (IE, if riichi tile is 5s, 3s-4s-6s-7s-8s)
2) Tiles connected to the dora. In this case, 1p-2p-3p-4p.

Terminals aren't any safer than any other number tile if suji isn't involved, either.
>>
>>15334895
Include 2s in 1) as well, I left it out by mistake.
>>
>>15334723
Given how little information is available I'd toss 1p and go for an open tanyao. His hand is probably not worth all that much, so you might be able to outrun it
>>
>>15334867
>>15334723

Unfortunately, yea. Every tile is a dangerous one.

Argument against 1-pin. Sure, it is a terminal. But it is also a dora indicator. This leaves a wait such as 1-4 to be very much possible. Plus, only 1 dora is accounted for.
>>
>>15334948
Welp, guess I fell for that one too
>>
>>15334723
2m imo.
Norhing is even close to safe, so you should simply discard outter tiles first, starting with terminals, then 2/8 then 3/7 and so on.
However the 1p is near the dora so it goes down in safetey and of course 2p as dora is even more dangerous leaving the 2m. This also has two other benefits: First you have two 2m which slightly reducses the chance for a tanki or shanpon wait and also gives you one more safe tile (the other 2m) in case the first is safe. Secondly the first discarded non honour tile was 1m, so there is a chance that he didn't have anything around it. Of course this is a weak information since the riichi came only a few turns later but it's still better than nothing.

Another possible option would be to keep attacking since the difference in danger of your possible discards is so low that the chance of getting into tenpai yourself outweights them. In this case 7m should be discarded.

Events are fun. Since I had some free time and better understand how they work now, I added some pages to the guide about them for those who play MJ and are interested in playing in them.

I don't expect I'll be able to keep the current events list -current- but I will try my best.

Speaking of events, I'm meeting up with a mahjong club later this month for some sweet sweet tile slapping on auto tables. Fun shit

Now that I've moved back to San Diego, I found that there's biweekly meetups. However, it's only Chinese and American mahjong. I'm doomed.

There was a variety of options to be had here. What would you have done?

>Discard 2p and stay in tenpai, keeping the penchan wait?
>Discard 8s to keep 2s to go into iishanten and hope you can call a 2m, 2p or a 5p to re-enter tenpai?
>Discard 2s to stay in tenpai but discard 8s and 7s when you have the chance for a better wait?
>>
>>15338471
>2s, 8s

>>
>>15338482
Oops, meant

>Discard 9s to keep 2p to go into iishanten and hope you can call a 2m, 2p or a 5p to re-enter tenpai?
>Discard 2p to stay in tenpai but discard 9s and 7s when you have the chance for a better wait?

Didn't really sleep so typing is hard. Harder than winning at mahjong apparently.
>>
>>15338471
You're in the lead, east, and it's early in the round. Dump 2p and go for a quick win
>>
>>15338471
Cut the 9s. My play style revolves around calls anyway so I'd definitely be aiming for the bigger hand.
>>
>>15334723
2m no brainer. This is a full defense situation, amplified by ifv the guy wins, you can close out the round

2m is best because less likely to deal in with and lower expected hand value due to proximity with red5 and 2p dorra
>>
>>15338471
In this situation you have good lead and want to maintain it. This is a quick cheap which you need to defend against ahh touching. Defense and points being taken to account, just discard 2p. Winning fast is the obvious priority here, you need to outrun your opponents and bail quickly
>>
>>15338471
See that 4-pin? You risk getting into furiten by keeping 2-pin.

You're in a fast tenpai now. Just shoot for your 2900 and be happy with it.

>Mm I ended up discarding 2p. But I didn't keep the kanchan wait, which was my mistake. Looking at your discards, I don't see a reason why you needed to break tenpai in the first place.

There's a general misconception that a kanchan wait is a bad wait. At the same time, it can be improved to a ryanmen, if a conveniently adjacent tile pops up (like 6-sou) to switch waiting for 5-8 instead of just 8.

Good wait vs bad wait is dependent on the number of tiles available. When you were kanchan tenpai before. you had all four 8-sou to rely on. All you needed was one. Unfortunately for you, that one popped up; and you weren't tenpai.

At the same time, yes, there are legitimate reasons to break up tenpai. Trying to rework a hand to get a better wait is not one of them. Doing this actually gives other players a chance to catch up and get to tenpai themselves.

>Yeah, I should have done that. Would have won a few turns later. My switching to a ryanmen wait allowed shimocha to reach tenpai, but it also allowed me to score a riichi stick.

Also, I didn't realize the typo I made, but basically i was also saying that if you called you would have less tiles to defend against other riichis (which you want to do at your point situation). So its even more reason to not call

>>15340731

>>
>>15340130
this play didn't make much sense to me
You deleted you kanchan 97s, which would win on 8s or make ryanmen on 6s, in order to go for getting a non-terminal, then getting a neighbouring tile to make a ryanmen

Getting the neighbouring tile is the exact same as if you kept 97s and waited for a neighbouring tile on 7s, except with the latter situation, you win on the 8s
>>
>>15340757
I was wondering whether nocculta or Corak got there already.
>>
>>15340759
Beginner to early intermediate players seem to not believe kanchan can win.
>>
>>15340781
Here's a question : disregarding the number of discarded tiles for either waits, what's better, kanchan wait or shanpon wait?
>>
>>15340812
Shanpon's usually better because if it's not with honor tiles, it can turn into edge waits easier.
>>
>>15340761
Corak here. I'm well on my way back to 5 dan.
>>
>>15340458
Yeah, I'm still slightly cagey about kanchan waits. But I think I just messed up in this particular case. Most of the time I embrace the kanchan or penchan wait. The first pic is a nice example, which was an earlier round from the same game. Then again the 6s just came to me so I didn't even have time to second-guess my wait.

Tokujou

Aside from not drawing anything I think the other problem is I've been going into/forced into betaori too fast and too often. My normal deal in rate is ridiculously high for a 6 dan, but it has actually been going down this month. I just won my last game when I decided to say fuck it and just attack into anything but dealer/multiple riichi
>>
>>15345090
Your riichi rate is really high, so it's not surprising that you often deal in after you riichi. Remember that declaring riichi doesn't guarantee you to win the round. In tokujou and houou, particularly, people will know how to push against riichi and win.

If the other players look dangerous, if you've got a decent lead and it's not your dealer turn, if you can dama with a hand worth 5200 or more (depending on the point situation), or if you've got a bad wait with good odds of improvement, then you should hold off on riichi.

Also remember the importance of last place avoidance.

>>
>>15342614
I find that new players often heavily undervalue dora, and would actually do very well to appreciate it more. The number of times I've seen stuff from inexperienced players like discarding a dora pair to go for honitsu after a yakuhai pon is staggering.

I can easily see some people being too unwilling to discard dora in a winnable hand that has no room for it, but being respectful of dora is likely more healthy for their development as a player than disregard for it.
>>
>>15347453
You don't understand, man. What I mean by don't fall in love with the dora is in a situation where you have no use for it but still keep it because it's the dora. I mean, what do you want to do with that isolated 9p dora? Wait until you're tenpai? By then someone would already be waiting to ron you with that tile. And boom! you lost to a damaten 12000 hand.

But sure, keep being greedy.

Good wait, hand is worth 5200 points minimum. Suji against riichi discard is spooky but ultimately worth the risk.

How many points did you lose?

I fucked up here since I discarded the 3p instead of the 7p two rounds earlier. Would have let me get into tenpai without discarding the dangerous 7p. But I was thinking I would have to call pon on 2m or 7p to speed things up.

It's okay, luck went my way after this. 4-dan busted etc.

>busted out every time you lose

Do you play with an all or nothing playstyle?
>>
>>15353213
Good streaks will occur in higher lobbies as well. As long as one doesn't get complacent by winning too often, it's fully realistic to go 30 games with just a couple of fourths and 10+ wins in tokujou. Just keep being aware that the other three players aren't just spectating, no matter how good it gets.

>>15353280
It's Anon's only loss.
>>
>>15353280
Well, on this account I have busted out a single time. 1/24 = 0.041

In that particular game, I played really poorly. Didn't start the game with the proper mindset to play and dealt into an obvious honitsu 6 dora hand in East 1 when I was only iishanten. After that, I couldn't complete a single hand and busted out in south 1 as everyone else kept getting tsumos. If that one game captured my style, I think you'd be right.

But no, this time around I'm trying to deal in as little as possible. It's like practice for the higher lobbies where other players know more about tile efficiency.

>>15353303

>>15353576
Let me change the question. Riichi or dama?
>>
>>15353545
I don't have any safe tiles so I might as well finish the hand and solidify my lead. Call riichi and cut 5s. It's possible that no one is in tenpai yet and they might bail. I also don't see any dora or 7m so there's a decent chance I can tsumo it.
>>
>>15353697
So it passed? What's the wait?
>>
>>15353545
Is there setting to make tsumogiri tiles greyed out in game?

That looks like fail attempt of chinitsu.
>>
>>15353719
Yeah, 5s passed. His hand hadn't changed since kamicha's 8s discard, and the 3s pon makes 25s one chance. The late honour tile discards suggest that it's more likely to be honitsu than chinitsu. The only remaining fanpai is xia, and since I have the souzu akadora, we're probably looking at 3900 at most. He hasn't discarded any souzu yet so he might still be iishanten.

I'll post the outcome in a bit, but first I'd like to hear whether people would rather riichi or dama.

>>15353737
It's only for replays and spectating. During a game, you have to watch out for it yourself. It's too valuable information to just give away.

No. I don't know why since if you were playing in real life you could easily see if someone is discarding the tiles they drew.

My brother, who keeps telling me to go for chiitoitsu every hand no matter what, was here while I was playing and consequently saw someone score big for the first time.

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2016060704gm-0009-0000-bfd1242e&tw=3

Also my stats have suffered as I played through the night instead of sleeping in an attempt to fix my sleeping schedule.
>>
>>15355461
So is 1m. But 1m is probably safe against kamicha and shimocha as well, while 6m isn't safe against them. Since all dragon and wind tiles are on the table, nobody can have fanpai. Shimocha doesn't have honitsu, so he can't win on an 1m, and kamicha could have a shanpon or tanki on 1m, but probably wouldn't have yaku so he wouldn't be able to ron either.
>>
>>15355484
It's better if anyone but toimen wins, thus dealing the riskier tile is fine. East is probably bailing after the riichi, so the only concern is toimen and shimocha. Shimocha is only a concern if he has a 5 han hand, which is possible, but unlikely (tanyao dora 4, tanyao sanshoku dora 3). If you deal into his 7700 hand, you still get third because of seating order.

Riichi 4 from a 468

You never "know" what they have, it's about weighing likelihood and value.

You will be able to recover the Rate if you're good enough. If you're not, your new account is unlikely to do much better in the end.

If it's really low and you somehow become a much better player since you last played ranked, then it might be quicker to make a new account if the old one has a lot of games played. I sincerely doubt that's worth trudging through ippan again, mind you.
