A young female idol is in critical condition after she was repeatedly stabbed by an apparent fan in the city of Koganei, Tokyo, police said.
Mayu Tomita, 20, has yet to regain consciousness after suffering nearly two dozen stab wounds to her neck and chest.
Police arrested Tomohiro Iwazaki, 27, after he was seen assaulting Tomita with a knife at an event held in a building in the city at around 5 p.m. on Saturday. The suspect was reported to be a fan of hers and has admitted attacking her, according to police.
Tomita may have been a victim of stalking. The Metropolitan Police Department said the idol had consulted police earlier this month, saying a man named Iwazaki had persistently written to her via her blog and Twitter account.
When police received a call from an eyewitness and rushed to the scene, they found a bloody folding knife. Iwazaki was standing nearby and admitted using the knife to stab her.
Tomita was scheduled to appear at a live performance event later that night. The building is some 300 meters southwest of JR Musashi-Koganei Station and close to Koganei City Hall.

Three years ago Iwazaki had been bothering other tarentos on their blogs with threats of murder. At the time he already received a warning for that, but his name didn't get recorded in the national database of offenders, so he appeared as "clean" to the police when he began stalking his newest victim.
Since January, he had been stalking Tomita at every music club event she performed, asking for her phone number and shit. The staff of these music clubs already knew of Iwazaki's face and behavior, but did nothing to chase him away. They just tried to "distance themselves".
Both Tomita and her mother had been urging police to restrain the man during the whole last month, but police refused to investigate over just tweets because first they had to confirm it was really him. When he started sending plain death threaths, they still didn't deem it a cause of concern.
On the day of the incident, Tomita asked for patrol cars to check the surroundings of the music club, but police didn't forward the request to the city's police station.
And lastly, she was just told to " give police a call if Iwazaki showed up again", but when she called, the police didn't even pay attention to her GPS location and just sent a police car to her house address, not the music club.
