The only free wifi in Australia are from places like McDonalds, etc. and speeds are shit with a limit of like 100mb per day. Some libraries have larger allowances, like 1GB a day, but I've yet to come across a library wifi connection that isn't shithouse.

I really love the JR line tour videos. It's interesting to see all of the small hikyou stations.
Is the line in the video in this post a commuter route, though? That's really the only explanation I can come up with for why the train has to stop at umpteen suburban stations. But it's certainly long enough to be inter-city, and it goes through a long stretch of nothing but country.
If I'm just being ignorant here, please point that out, though. But I wonder how private rail companies can stay profitable while maintaining such a large number of what look to be highly underused stations without government subsidies.
>>15295678
i have no idea myself, i just saw the link one day while clicking back and forth on youtube, and i saw a shinkansen video that was 5 hours long. i put them on every night before bed as my white noise to help me sleep.
i think they would have to be heavily subsidized by hte japanese govt, but since the level of private car ownership is so much lower there, they would desperately need rail service. in one of the last threads, a guy mentioned that the rail companies are deeply in the red without govt subsidies so i think its that too.
amtrak has the same deal, there are hundreds of abandoned stops along the CSX line in the southeast alone.
>>15295678
Apart from maybe JR Tokai/Central, they're all being subsidized. Japans rail network would be a lot worse if that wasn't the case.
>>15295678
Rail in Japan is a lot different from rail in the US. You have the big parts of what was Japanese National Railways (JR East, JR West, JR Central, JR Shikoku, JR Kyushu, JR Hokkaido) that make up most of the railways in Japan. However, there are a lot of 'third sector' railways (Kashima Rinkai, Sanriku, etc) that are privately owned and mainly tourist oriented but still have a public transport function.
The rail companies are struggling though with the price of Shinkansen tickets being more expensive than plane tickets and it taking longer to get from Tokyo to Sapporo on the Hayabusa than a plane. Also even though (I believe) JR Hokkaido now has a connection to JR East's lines through the Senkan Tunnel they are losing money and they have a pretty bad record for safety.
I model JR East in N scale, hence the knowledge. I also appreciate these threads for scenery ideas.

A barber shop?
>>15303215
Indeed. Probably caters more to women, though.
>>15303225
Was the barber's pole a thing they took from us during the occupation, or was it something they did pre-ww2?
>>15303230
After some quick Googling, it looks like the first appearance of such a barber pole in Japan was in the late 19th century, after the opening of Japan but before WWII.
>In Japan there have been hair dressers referred to as "髪結い" (kamiyui) ever since the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Just one year after the Edo period ended, in 1869 the first Western-style hair salon was opened in Yokohama.
>Two years later, in 1871, a small barber shop in suburban Tokyo called "西洋風髪剪所 (Seiyou Kamihasamisho)" became the first in the country to use the red, white, and blue barber pole. Western hair-styling techniques were being slowly introduced to Japan at the time, and with the adoption of these techniques, the barber poles also became widely used across the country.
>>15303272
>1871
Makes sense. Japan was in this wierd period when right after the Restoration they were literally obsessed with anything Western.

Thank you for your responses.
I'm saving up for my own trip to Japan. Is there a line that anyone here recommends? Something ideal would start from Tokyo and continue for not more than a day. I'd prefer something that takes me through a good cross-section of urban and rural countryside.
Of course, I'd also be interested in hearing any different suggestions from you guys.
>>15303158
>and they have a pretty bad record for safety.
Not him but I was always under the impression Japan's railways had a good reputation for safety. What sort of problems have they had?

Then go. Save up money, buy a plane ticket and go. It's worth it, I promise you. Standing in a Shinto shrine in the middle of the woods with only the voices of birds and the sound of a nearby stream as distractions is one of the most peaceful things in the world.

that graveyard's located in rather dense suburb
and what's with the house in the middle? is it the gravekeeper's?
seems rather unpleasant to dwell next of all those tombs no?
>>15376591
It's actually quite common
>>15376648
is it?
are those full burials are cremated remains?
it seems to me that both in western and asian countries people tend to vacate away from cemeteries, what with the bodies leaking substances into the earth, making the area 'unhealthy', though this could be just folk science
i have to admit this looks rather quaint, like a plot of a horror movie
>>15376735
Almost every corpse in Japan is cremated. Like 99.9%.

Is it necessary to know full on Japanese to visit the more rural places, or will I get by knowing very basic sentence building?
>>15393978
How rural?
Some Japanese people can't even converse well with some inaka.
In general, full on Japanese with keigo is the only way to go. Even if you are fluent, many natives will assume you won't be able to converse with them.
However, travel with the knowledge you have right now. Perfect, trouble free communication shouldn't stop anyone, including you.

There's a lot of coverups going on but basically it's not uncommon for entire trains full of passengers to just disappear, never to be seen again.
>>15394159

>>15394447
youkai, they attack trains inaka. its been only really going on since the end of WW2, the imperial army was always around before then, and would chimp out on them if they caught them.
there were some crazy as fuck stories on the old bigdaikon forums back in the early 2000's about weird shit happening in the sticks, /x/ soopyness, and shitloads of missing people.
supposedly a town lost a whole class of kids but they found the JET teacher ranting and raving about the devil and monsters dude was in police custody for about a year, before they realized he was totally insane. that's the urban legend that I read anyhow.

I live in Europe and in the past I used to live next to a graveyard as well. There were full burials as well as cremated remains. Never considered it uncommon, until some friends said it was creepy.
Why is japan so magical? Is it because they are the only ones who have 4 seasons?
Man I'd like to go fishing in Japan. Does anyone have any experience with that?
>>15401135
It's magical because they have interesting architecture.
I'm sure many pictures of European towns could provide us with similar feelings.
>>15402465

a little bit of good and interesting architecture goes a long way, and unfortunately, here in America, it is not so common in most places

>>15403222
It is in some places. Not everywhere do they tear down the old for the new, there's still some 200-300 year old buildings in this country.
>>15404333
Again though, they need a sign to know that? The people who are going to shoplift won't let a sign stop them.
Unless it's supposed to be like Clerks where simply having a "please be honest" sign makes people think they're being watched and are less inclined to steal.
>>15406894
You'd have to live in the northeast to find a building so old.
Some people live in regular America, i.e. unimportant places that were colonised after air conditioning was invented.

>Even if you are fluent, many natives will assume you won't be able to converse with them.
On the contrary, this wasn't my impression at all. When I was out photographing in obscure places in the country, residents would ask me questions rather unreservedly about my equipment and background. Country folk are generally very chit-chatty, and there was always an assumption that I knew Japanese. People in the countryside know standard Japanese just fine and you'll have no problem at all if you're fluent.
Tokyo was really the only place where I had people trying to talk to me in English on a regular basis.
