However if you watch older interview (circa 2014) she definitly seems to be the shy type but she was less "hardcore" in her behavior (it is also the case during the "meet and greet" at the end of lives) so my opinion is that it is a combination of both.

I don't either because it it's not them, it's Koba. They're just doing their jobs as idols at the end of the day.
He seems more concerned with getting "Metal Points" from the metal community by having them name-drop Metallica or Cannibal Corpse or BMTH in interviews or to collaborate with Dragonforce, than he is concerned with promoting Japanese metal.
He's also extremely aversive towards idols, but the fact that he controls their image and their words and what sort of questions they get asked in interviews and gives them the Fox God "get out of any tricky questions" free pass gives them all of the negative traits of idols without really the positive ones. There's also no way that they love metal, absolutely no way, not in my humble opinion.
Like you said, popularity probably has quite a bit to do with that distance between them and their fans, but Koba needs to make up his mind. If they're a metal band then he needs to stop managing them like an ultra-idol group with all the scripted answers and social media blackout.
Even their twitter account is this weird sterile thing that only serves to tweet concert dates & ticket links, and retweet articles & videos about themselves.
Hopefully their management can reach that level of self-awareness and realize that metal acts don't act like they do, even idols don't act like that for the most part.

As you said, it's obvious that Koba is putting a lock over every public apparition, I guess the fact that they were not prepared to such a popularity may explain his frilosity (even if the situation is like this since more than two years), and the fact that they're sort of hiding the "idol" part (because it will not look metal enough).

The social media (or lack thereof) is really what frustrates me the most. Look at virtually every single group that gets talk about here and their members have their own unique twitter accounts, even underage kids like Rei.
