Definitely, the names got worse (Johnny's West, really janni?).
But when you look at the janisu jr. unit names, most of them are/were cringey: OSSAN, They Budou, Question? (the wikipedia page has a list, and the names are hilarious).
I was super into NEWS and still check on them from time to time. Tegoshi is OTT as hell but really talented. I think if it wasnt for the Arashi LJ communities being super psycho, I would have been a big fan of them too. I really liked Matsujun in Gokusen.

Not really. There are hundreds of girl groups so you can always jump ship, but basically two companies have a stranglehold on the boy band market, there aren't really any alternatives. So they just try to hide their relationships, eventually get outed and some fans get angry but nothing actually happens.
Also there's the fact that the man who controlled the male idol industry for decades was literally raping the idols and everybody kind of ignored it.
