Miyazaki here.

It just made my furniture rumble a bit. Even in the epicenter in Kumamoto, it was just some shaking. A FUCK TONNE of shaking, but not really that much damage considering this was approaching the level of "The Big One" Kyushu is apparently due to get sometime in the near future.

Aftershocks are a pest.

Lived at grandma's house in Japan, didn't watch too much tv (so you know context). I think the tv channels only go up to 12, unless you pay or more or something?
>>
>>15075970
大変だ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>
>>15078644
Isn't that the same in every country? I don't watch TV but I'm pretty sure we only have a dozen free TV channels, ignoring smaller regional ones and everything else is pay only. I thought this was normal?
>>
>>15076145
The free TV channels in Japan, aside from cable and satellite networks, typically used channels between 1 through 12.
For example, a typical TV set in Tokyo could watch channels 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 just with antennas.
The 10, 11 and 12 buttons I think are relics of that system, since they serve little purpose nowadays what with the cable TV type channel input.
>>
>>15078693
In USA at least, while there might only be a dozen free channels, they go like channel 2, 7, 14, 37, 45, etc., depending on the locale.

The 震度 scale isn't meant to measure damage. This earthquake really did record a very high intensity, even historically. In the Mercalli intensity scale, the recorded max 92 cm/s and 1,580gal correspond to IX Violent (60-116cm/s) and X-XII Extreme (above 432gal), respectively.

All that blocked sunlight means plants die.

When plants die, no more hiding spots for mosquitoes from their natural predators like birds, spiders, etc

Also, insects hate ash.

It would be like the DDT carpet bombing we did all over the world like 50 years ago in an attempt to make mosquitoes and fleas and ticks, etc extinct except this shit would last like 10 years with all the ash in the atmosphere.

It's really funny how the people who are watching these Earthquake streams the most are weaboos from the West (sometimes spamming random kanji in Japanese to fit in).

震度7(Seismic intensity 7) is the maximum shaking as furniture flies in the room and people roll. It is not shaking to feel subtly.

but 何でか分からないけど sounds more natural (or 何故か. Just keep your tone consistent).

>このようなしゃべり方を聞いたら殴りたくなる
このような sounds a bit too formal for the rest of the sentence. こういう is better here. Also, should be を聞くと.

>たぶん話者が面倒くさい人だと思わせるんだ
話者 is a bit too formal. 思わせる here sounds a bit off. I'd say 感じさせる or something.

承知してます
>>
>>15101175
>このような sounds a bit too formal

That was on purpose, I like adding some formal words to my casual texts/speech. It confuses native speakers and when they call me out on it I can always act like I didn't know.

I have no good reason or justification for this.

>Also, should be を聞くと.

Perhaps it would be more natural, if you feel like it would, but -たら is the magic bullet, isn't it? I actually saw a study about various condicionals with example sentences and native Japanese speakers putting in the appropriate condicional(s), and in majority of cases the answers were like "most people would put in -たら and most also one more".

Although in few cases I even saw something like "40% -たら, 30% ...ると, 30 -れば". C'mon, give me a break with answers like that.

>I'd say 感じさせる

That's a pickle, I have 思う as "think" and 感じる as "feel" in my mind, but I guess in Japanese it's not as clear cut.
>>
>>15101218
You shouldn't think of Japanese words as translated English words.
>>
>>15101239
I don't... mostly. Often when reading Japanese works I find cases where something would be confusing if I throught about it with English in mind, but for some words I just can't shake it off yet.
>>
>>15101218
>I actually saw a study...
Oh, that sounds interesting.

I feel 聞いたら and 聞くと are rather different, though? It seems like 聞いたら is purely sequential, whereas 聞くと implies causation. (But then there's stuff like ピンときたら110番, so you probably need to take into consideration who the subject is...I'd have to look at more examples before I can say anything precise.)
>>
>>15101262
They are different, but I presume the people who answered in most cases were fine with just expressing the sequence of events.

In many cases the causality is very clear just from that too. Consider 聞いたら殴りたくなる, you probably see the causality that 殴りたくなる because 聞いた (something that makes you 殴りたい).
>>
>>15101288
Yeah, I agree the meaning's clear, but I'm trying to insist on a fine point. In this particular case, l think 聞くと sounds a lot better.

I know that's pretty useless unless I can say something more general, but now you're making me doubt my intuition about conditionals more generally! I'll go read some stuff.
>>
>>15100172
There have been over 600 earthquakes in Kyushu since Thursday, all centered in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures.
>>
>>15101353
>I'm trying to insist on a fine point. In this particular case, l think 聞くと sounds a lot better.

I'm glad that you do. Based on this exchange I'll remember the nuances of すると a lot better.

I was just stating my reasons for initially going with -たら.

This time it'll be difficult. They've found that some fault lines are longer than expected, and connected with the Mount Aso. Geologically, the Kumamoto region is a mess.
>>
>>15080750
Assigning an actual measurement to a limited scale is not useful, just a layer of abstraction. The system has resulted in a large event obtaining the maximum classification as would be achieved by a catastrophic event.
