You know that Angel Beats line count is not the actual line count at all, right? He dumped the scripts and is counting literally every single line in them, including name tags and code. If you're making an actual comparison to what every other project in the world calls a line, it's less than 10% of that number.

its on reddit. There's a preview video. The english seems kinda bad but its a fan TL so whatever. It's a pretty big game and I don't know why that guy is wasting his time working on it for free. I also don't understand why westerners idolize Maeda/Key so much. Actually, It's probably because the only nakige they are exposed to is shit adapted into anime like Clannad and they seem to think nakige are kamige. Since Key seems open to the west, I hope that guy tries to get that shit officialized. People translating shit and buying shit officially shows Japanese devs that a market exists in the west.
>>
>>15020379
Here we go with the plebbitors.

I went in with the lowest of the low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. The phrase "it'll be fine after the editor does his job" seems like it might apply for once.
>>
>>15020379
Yeah, because if you translate something as a hobby you "must" to sell it to SP/VisualArts, if not is "shit" right?
And are you pretty sure that you know what is the definition of nakige and kamige? Because Clannad is none of these.
>>
>Koiseyo Imouto Banchou - 4% (1609/42627) lines translated

Is the translator any good? He has a thread on Fuwanovel so I assume he's shit.
>>
>>15020439
Not him, but "nakige" literally means "crying game," and Key also invented the formula for nakige when they were still Tactics and have released most of their games since using evolved forms of that basic formula.
There's hardly any argument that CLANNAD isn't a nakige.
Also,
>seem to think nakige are kamige.

You're arguing against his perception of other people's opinions in the first place.

So Good_Haro mentioned that MangaGamer's got more BL and Otomege lined up and I was wondering, how viable is Nitro+Chiral?

The thought popped into my head when the email sent for MangaGamer's April Fools sales mentioned a Watanabe Studio, which made me think of Watanabe Kazuhiro, who composes songs for a good number of Nitro+ games, including Nitro+Chiral.

Why is /jp/ SFW when nobody has a job?!
>>
>>15020721
I wouldn't expect anything from Nitro+ since it's associated with JAST. Also, most of their titles have been fantranslated, which lowers the chances of them being licensed by MG.
>>
>>15020721

Isn't mangagamer still pretty skittish about licensing titles with fan translations? With that in mind, I don't really think nitro+chiral is happening.

I'm kind of tempted to assume that the title is
>https://vndb.org/v7769
since it has all the right ingredients. VA is interested in the west, but not exclusive with anyone. All ages version. "HD". Haro played it if I recall. >and some double trouble. The only thing stopping me from being sure is that the fan translation project for it hasn't been shut down.

>>
>>15020777

If they can't go on Steam, then they're most likely not happening. ef's extremely poor sales basically killed the chances of existing fan TLs being licensed outside of Steam releases.

>not advertising Gahkthun while there's still hype from the Tesla Model 3 announcement

Why is MG so bad at marketing?
>>
>>15020794
Maybe Gahkthun suck and is one of the worst Liar-soft games?
And the same I can say about Fata Morgana, maybe they want to releas it because is all-ages and they have hopes with Steam but... I don't think it will sell well.
But yeah MG marketing suck; the demo of TB announced in Steam can be downlad only from MG main site after creating an account and there are 0 coments from the staff in these forums.

Incorrect.

Steam is full of people who love horror vns, so Fata Morgana should do fine. Plus, it has decent art and a good soundtrack, which are major selling features.

>Maybe Gahkthun suck and is one of the worst Liar-soft games?
Hahahahah, sounds like you don't know liar soft at all. They've released a lot worse games.
>>
How long is Fata Morgana roughly? If it's a full length vn, then it would appear that MG is experimenting with lowering their prices to increase sales numbers. On Steam, anything over $20 is a tough sell for a vn.

Two new Tokyo Babel reviews:

"This visual novel is top notch with excellent writing, translation, and overall research of esotericism (theosophy and philosophy) within the Abrahamic relgions (particularly in Kabbalistic mysticism and much study of the Ethiopian Book of Enoch). Has surpassed all my expectations (especially being my first visual novel indulgence despite owning Steins' Gate). If you have any interest in the esoteric studies, this game is well worth your time and money. Highly, highly recommended."

---

"There's action, romance, comedy, drama, horror, suspense and all of it is just so damned fun. That's Tokyo Babel in a nutshell.

The description on the store page pretty much perfectly sums up the story, and there's a free demo available at the mangagamer site, so I will instead go on about the things I like about this VN that makes me recommend it. Additionally I will remark that I at least enjoyed all the characters and found something to like in all of them, though given how that is somewhat subjective, I would refrain from adding that as a plus.

For a VN it takes up nearly nine gigabytes of space, and all of that space is spent on top quality effects, animations and CGs, all of which make the experience feel a lot less static than your typical VNs. If there's a ball of fire being described, you'll see a ball of fire. If there's a pillar of water, you'll see a geyser effect on your screen. A background will pan around a bit with bits of debris and smoke. The game makes sure the text is usually accompanied with some effect to further immerse you in the action going on. The character sprites bounce around, move from side to side, and are just expressive in general. I haven't seen this in a lot of VNs I played and is just really nice with how much effort they put into it.

The story is gripping, goes along at a good pace, and fills you in on the lore of the place the game is set while never seeming like an info dump. This game is a lot like Fate/Stay Night, taking inspiration from myth and legends and building up their characters from various figures from them. The use of the esoteric in this game is pretty well done, much like Umineko and their handling of the occult, with of course a flair that only the Japanese making a VN with moe characters and grand epic battles can pull off while mixing such things.

The voice acting comes from some of the industry's top talent. If you're halfway interested in anime, you'll hear someone you have heard before from a popular anime. The music is all well done, though personally a part of me feels as though there could have been just a little more variety, though that doesn't at all mean there's a dearth of tracks available. There are thirty unique pieces of music available (from the music selection menu), and they're all pretty darn good. Presentation wise, it's all top stuff.

The best part is that there's a lot of game to play through. VNDB lists about 30 to 50 hours, and I went through one of the three routes available in about 12 hours, so I would say depending on your reading speed, that is about right. This is a LARGE VN, and it's just great. I know I will find no fault with the other routes and will probably only have a better opinion of the game as the later routes. Many people will probably be scared off by the price, but I can say I do not regret paying full price for this VN."

Am I going to do this for every review, you ask? Yes.

Wiki says one of their albums was released in Japan and they're under the EMI Japan record label. Still really strange that some random Canadian Christian band made it into an otome game.

Wow, HunieCam Studio is even cheaper than Huniepop. That is going to outsell Tokyo Babel something fierce.

Speaking of which, new review:

"Finished the game:
- Heroines fights are short and mostly disappointing compared to most of the fights, but the last Samael fight is top notch for me.
- Chuuni fights all over the place and no single character that has 'simple' power. Raison d'etre stuffs really helps making the fight more grand and develops characters at the same time.
- Didn't expect the slice of life scenes to be not so out of place. Can't explain it really well but it really fits the main character groups pretty well.. some of you might not like it though.
- Character endings are satisfying all around instead of just focusing on true end. I didn't expect that considering my previous experience with Higashide is Ayakashibito.
- Some characters feels like they're under developed but at least each of them has their own ending, making them not forgotten to the readers.

it's pretty okay"

Probably because they are doing fuck all or having more licensing problems and over promised on something they can't deliver again.

Speaking of tokyobabel, steamspy has finally managed to pick it up http://steamspy.com/app/443380

Still too early for any information(margin of error is higher than total sales), but the fact it actually got picked up is a good sign(if it didn't it would mean that so few people owned that their crawler never came across one.)
>>
>>15027740
> less than 1000 sales on steam
MG's inability to promote their games is astounding.

Search for news sites reporting releases gave me 2 results: hardcoregamer and n4g, both of which niche and irrelevant as fuck. Even ANN didn't report on launch despite reporting on licensing. Did they expect that people would see random completely unknown game for $35 with no boob bait on front screens and buy it up casually?
>>
>>15027839

Do you really think MG can control what news sites decide to post?
>>
>>15027839
steamspy does a rolling sample of all Steam's users. It takes about a week for it to even start being accurate.
>>
>>15027839
>(margin of error is higher than total sales)
>>
>>15027701
Do these sorts of things fall under fair use, or is it infringement?
>>
>>15027839
Not really sure. Personally I wasn't hyped up about this release
>>
>>15027850
MG can actually build up relationships with people in popular media instead just spamming press releases and hoping it would miraculously work out itself.
Just compare it to how media reports on every little game dovac releases.
>>
>>15027911
For better or worse, raymond goes after the high profile titles. Those market themselves.
>>
>>15027901
A key factor for considering fair use is the amount of content taken from the original work. Just being transformative by adding commentary doesn't make something fair use. That said, it hasn't been tested in courts so no one really knows.

Also, you could argue that it impacts the market of the original work.

http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/four-factors/#the_amount_and_substantiality_of_the_portion_taken
>>
>>15027901
>Do these sorts of things fall under fair use

The internet doesn't really understand it, but fair use isn't a law, it's a defense.

That's like asking "will I get away with this murder if plead insanity?"
>>
>>15027922
Yeah I can see these youtube longplays being subtitutes for buying, but it's no different from "normal" piracy. And this is an issue for all kinds of games, so its not like MG is solely affected.

For me, I like having these longplays around as a sort of scene replay.
>>
>>15027922
>Just being transformative by adding commentary doesn't make something fair use. That said, it hasn't been tested in courts
Actually, taking someone's work, adding commentary and publishing it was tested in court and it was judged as copyright violation.
>>
>>15027701
And what stops MG not being spineless slimes and click that "report copyright violation" button on every video? 20 parts would earn that fucker insta-permaban.

Sony takes shit down when people have like 30 seconds of one of their songs in a video. MG has every right to take that entire channel down. Its like posting an entire movie that came out a week ago on youtube.
>>
>>15028014
Yeah, people totally expect it for music and movies. But the gaming community tends to get upset about LPs getting taken down. The Youtubers feel entitled to profit off LPs.

Nintendo's already doing it on all of their games though, unless you sign up to profit share with them, seems like people have accepted that.
>>
>>15028014

Sony's got access to content ID to get that shit killed quick.

All mangagamer can do is file a claim the old fashioned way. If they can be bothered.
>>
>>15027962

I can count 20 games (several story-driven, such as LISA, The Walking Dead) in my Steam library that I bought expressly because I watched a LP of them. And conversely, I can think of at least 5 I skipped completely because I watched a LP and saw how awful the game was.

If it's really worth the money, then videos like LP will be positive marketing for MG (assuming they don't start being dicks about it, which -always- backfires). If it's not, then LPs and such help expose that. This is especially true for a company that barely advertises.
>>
>>15028104
The videos mentioned by doddler arent LPs. They're 0 commentary, autoread videos for the entire game. Acceptable would be like, beginning/prologue and maybe like fight sequences, comedy sequences. But this is the entire thing, chronological from start to finish without any intent of showcasing anything. It exists only for views/money/channel popularity.
>>
>>15028104
Gameplay and book are different things.
There's literally zero point in "playing" VN after you watched "LP" of entire game.

Didn't MG have "only part of game" policy for LP? It was very sensible idea and this "streamer" is clearly violating it.
>>
>>15028104
But you didn't watch the entire game on LP right? You saw a representative sample and made a decision?
>>
>>15028266

No, I watched the whole thing on nearly every single one (though for some like Slime Rancher it didn't really matter). I explicitly called out the earlier games because there's effectively no replay value to them (Into The Gloom and IMSCARED are other great examples).

I bought them because I saw that they were indeed worth the money. There will always be people who just 'watch & leave', but the converse is also true. Porn is still being made, despite mass pirating. Movies and TV shows are downloaded en-mass from file-sharing sites, and the movie industry still makes billions of dollars. The music industry didn't implode when Napster and Limewire happened. That whole U2 fiasco with iTunes? Suddenly U2 sales went up. Windows is one of the most heavily pirated pieces of software around, and that's before they started giving it out for free. I'm not saying there're no limits, but it is very much in MG's favor to be lenient about them, especially when they have so little presence.
>>
>>15028324
At the very least there has to be a stand against monetization
>>
>>15028347

I personally don't even have a problem with that; not only does MG now not have to pay them to advertise their product, but it gives the channel owner an incentive to try to get as many people to watch the video as possible (and, by extension, make that many more people even aware it exists). I'd have a problem with channel owners trying to use Youtube's fucked-up takedown system against MG, and I'd be okay with MG claiming part of the Ad revenue on a video, but I don't think it's a problem in-and-of itself.

Hell, I would not even know who MG was if I hadn't pirated Shuffle (which I now own through them). I've found so many games and songs that I would've never even known I liked had I not seen LPs or stumbled upon some random pirated upload on Youtube. Discovery's critically important, and videos area a great way to reach people who don't even know they like your stuff yet (and YT will even foot the bill!).

Tokyo Babel seems more charming than its perception as a generic chuuni VN. I'm liking the comedy and the flashy presentation which isn't exactly common in translated VNs.

I chuckle that the Japanese have to set a fantastical post-apocalyptic story involving angels and demons in high school though.

>>
>>15026808
Did he really say this? MangaGamer has no problem giving status updates, what the fuck is his deal?

He obviously has no progress to speak of. That's Sekai's thing, they SUPPOSEDLY acquire high profile games but only ever actually release low quality garbage. The licenses are only to get them more attention and they have no intention of actually translatng any of those games.

This is like the second chuuni game to ever even be translated. I don't understand the lack of interest, for once we finally get something different from the hordes of moege that are always translated (even OELVNs are moege), so how the heck is it perceived as generic? FSN is the only remotely comparable VN anyone would have seen, and it's not similar at all.

It's funny though, because Magical Eyes is doing way better and nobody's talking about that one here.

Huh, never heard of it.

I really doubt it's doing "way better" though.

It's, uh, in the OP image? How had you not heard of it?

Because as bad as the people here describe MG's marketing, whatever there was for Magical Eyes can only be described as "non-existent"
