In Touhou, it seems that in usual cases the soul and the body are the same. In unusual cases, it's shown that the body is reflecting the soul and will take the form of the soul over time.
Futo as a Shikaisen (as well as Miko) transferred her soul into an object. During the ritual the object took Futo's form as her soul was in it. Incidentally, her original body is now a plate. In Miko's case, it was the sword, and amusingly she is carrying her old body around all the time in the shape of a legendary sword.
For Mokou, her soul was made eternal, and her healing factor is actually the soul reforming the body in the soul's unchanging image.
