I haven't played a Touhou game since UFO. How was Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom received? Is it similar to the classic games?
I don't think LoLK is good. It's not similar to the classic games either. After UFO, Double spoiler and Fairy Wars turned out good though.

I feel like after UFO there were more forgettable characters per game. Music is hit and miss. I don't think anything comes close to MoF or SA as far as soundtrack, but there are some really good songs scattered throughout the newer ones. LoLK has a gimmick you either love or hate. Also an interesting story, better than DDC in my opinion.

I'd argue that music is the one thing that has remained consistently great throughout the series. LoLK has some great tracks imo, and I thought there were plenty of amazing arranges of them from C89. And DDC had Little Princess, which is top 10.

Overall, 13 is great, 14 is mostly good, and 15 is good for what it is but quite different; read up on it before you play. 14.3 is like the camera games but actually fun, you should definitely play that no matter what. 12.8 is neat but quite difficult, and has cute-as-fuck art. And if you're into the fighting games, they kind of fucked up 13.5 but ironed out a lot of the kinks for 14.5, which is basically a prequel for 15.
In any case, they're all worth giving a shot. Have fun.
