Are you fucking telling me that the Senate of Witches, Aurora, Bernkastel, Will, Erika, ect never existed? That Ange never met with her family in that last game?
That it was all made up by a delusional Yasu as a way to come to terms with her being a dick and realizing she should save Battler?

Because having Auau exist in the real world as Hachijou but also be an actual witch is kind of a slap in the face to Ryukishi's determination to convince readers to deny all magic and see through the magic for what is really going on. I'm still blown away by the story and am in love with it, but it feels like an asspull.
The magic ending was nice, though.
>>
>>14877860
Beato isn't a real witch and no magic was involved in the incident of Roukenjima, doesn't means Magic doesn't exists.

"Magic" in Umineko isn't a straightforward concept either way.

It's all your choice pal.

One perfectly valid explanation is the one you've just given. Bern is a cat. Everything is a weird meta lie, magic never existed, Auau is an author avatar, and Lambda was only a character in a story.

One other, perfectly valid explanation is that Bern is a witch, Lambda is a witch, Auau is big mama witch, and everything is a big magical combat between people embodying concepts.

Of course, parts of Umineko are only coherent if you believe that both explanations are valid at the same time.

Considering they were together for literal decades and only a fool would pass on Ikuko, probably, and I mean, Ryukishi did initially intend to make them a married couple, but changed his mind when the women on his team were against it.
>>
itt someone said that EP4 was the best of the question arcs.

I agree that it was the best of the first four. I mainly attribute that to the better parallelisms of Yasu with Maria and Ange. The previous two Episodes felt much more limited in that regard when you looked at Rosa and Eva. Well, EP2's was more expanded upon in EP4.

Looking back at EP3, the best moment for me was Eva trapping Battler in her red web before Beato stepped in, but that was the only stand out moment looking back.

I'm planning to re-read soon to flesh out my opinions more, but that's what I think of it at the moment. Hopefully the scenes in EP4 aren't as drawn out as I felt like they were before.

>End of the Golden Witch is still the weakest arc thus far in the overall Umineko When They Cry series. This volume manages to rectify some of the sins of the previous book by giving readers a little more to work with and getting to the point that the author was trying to make all along – that the murder mystery is absurd when you take a step back and really look at it. Hopefully the next story arc will stick with this more measured approach and the author can restrain himself – when we're allowed to make our own assumptions and inferences, mystery, no matter how strange, is more fun on the whole.
Do you agree?

Reading Ep 4 and I'm really confused.
How can it go from Ange's flashback to her denying the Seven Stakes in her private school AFTER the Rokkenjima Massacre, but then go to Maria seeing Sakutaro being killed BEFORE the incident but being actively aware of Ange denying the Seven Stakes which takes place in the future?
Maria mentions how mad she is at Ange right before Sakutaro cheers her up and then Maria goes to get dinner but forgets her key. I mean, at the time that happened, Ange was supposed to be 4 or so, right?
pls respond
>>
>>14879126
I might be remembering this wrong, but I don't think Maria was angry at Ange for denying the stakes. She was angry at her for saying that magic wasn't real when they played together some time earlier

Now that I look back and think on it more, I felt too betrayed by the ending and became paranoid of becoming a goat and blindly believing in magic. But now, I'm seeing it as more of a multilayered story like Higurashi, where Bern and Lambda are traveling through stories and have real magic. Their interest was piqued enough to entertain Yasu's tale and make her a witch. It's actually a really beautiful and kind thing, even if Bernkastel became malicious.
Thanks for the input, I think I was just being shallow at the end.

What is a good way to introduce someone to Umineko or Higurashi? It's a serious time commitment and I always want to share my admiration for how deep of a story it is, but calling anything deep cant help but come off as pretentious.

That's true, but I feel like it can't really be appreciated without the reveal of the Rika groundhog day fragment shit. It really blew my mind and made the story for me. I just want them to UNDERSTAND.
And I'd seen it around a lot and heard it was edgy. I like visual novels more as a media than anime.

I watched the anime first. I first saw it from the fingernail ripping scene on youtube back in the day and watched the series for the "killer lolis". It's a terrible and embarrassing reason but this was around a decade ago when I was still about 12.

You like visual novels, how about explaining to your friends what makes visual novels stand out from a regular one? Or in this case "sound novels".
>>

Music to distract people from noticing that shitty style the translators end up putting out? Pictures to lessen the workload when it comes to imagery and description?
>>
>>14881346
I like them because they're 100 times longer
>>
>>14881145
Honestly? I think that's the draw for most people. It's really crazy how much more immersive and well written the vn versus the anime.
and that's a good way to put it.
>>
>>14881346
Where is this coming from? Do not be so hostile to the Umineko. I could still appreciate the story, noting misspellings or the dialougue hovering over a line of periods, but being able to experience and enjoy it. These people are not professionals. I'm pretty sure it's not their job, they can't sustain their livelyhood on donations alone/ They have real life shit to do, yet are still working on patches, slowly.

And the lack of imagery is a matter of taste in the author. I read a fantasy author with (I counted) 8 pages describing a single palace. It's the writer's choice and if it doesn't appeal to you that's fine. to each their own.

>>14881369
Same. They tend to have a lot more of the 'show, don't tell' aspects that draw out the events of a story more steadily than an anime or manga. You get more immersion, I think. Empathy and familiarity are best drawn out in the reader when they get into the routines of the characters, live as them for a while. Which is a really clever thing of Ryukishi to do, since he loves that emotional bait and switch. Have a relieved happy even before something scary happens. You get used to the norm, so it's all the more shocking and real when freaky shit happends.
That's at least why I like the length.

At least she was the only artist who drew multiple Episodes (1, 3 and 8). Doing all of them would probably be a bit too much

I didn't realize until now that the whole Umineko manga actually is shonen. It's a bit surprising, considering how violent some of it was

Wouldn't it be seinen? Shonen is marketed towards preteens, and it would be a bit inappropriate for them to be reading Umineko. See: All of the murders (especially first twilight of the second game and Rosa's death[s] during episode 4) and Yasu's overall backstory.

both could be true. in the higher universe, not bound by the 3 dimensionality the free, unbound spirits have their fun with the lower world and those who are still bound by their bodies and refuse to look up, like goats, believing their world is the only reality.

on the lower, material world it's reflected by cat, cake, mary sue avatar and amnesia battler.

Battler 'fooled around' with other girls but he didn't really had sex with any of them because he's nihilistic.

While rereading ep 8, I realized featherine is a combined representation of battler and his author waifu since the device around her head stops memory issues which is what battler is having trouble with.

I also just now realized shannon was having issues figuring out how to make george happy when they are both men. Which is why theres a entire section dedicated to yasu.

I must be retarded.
>>
>>14890314
>featherine is a combined representation of battler and his author waifu
I've never though about that, but I think you might be right.

I found this on the Wiki, which kind of supports it
>It is noted by Lambdadelta that, at one point, Featherine's memory device was damaged, and as a result she suffered a change in appearance and personality.
>>
>>14890356
Well that is the witch that is the manifestation of the author writing the story which is Tohya, the memory device might symbolize when she finally found battler washed up and got info out of him so the story started to clear up even more in later iterations ending with the true diary.

Also theres so much foreshadowing shannon is a man in the early eps before its explained. I didn't think about that until later
>>
>>14890375
In general there is a lot of foreshadowing or stuff that you only really get if you know what's going on. Way more than I would have thought.

I've actually seen someone complain about Eva's odd behavior in Ep1 after the first Twilight, but then you take in the fact that she got bribed and actaully believes the deaths are fake, it suddenly makes sense.
>>
>>14890482
Also, I feel like battler might actually be dead since bern used it as a red truth, which means the personality of battler ceased to exist entirely in any form at the end.

But thats a stretch
>>
>>14890542
It's probably just because he changed his name. She also says in red that Ange dies in 1998, because she changed her name to Yukari Kotobuki

>What to people who deny Shkanontrice think of episode 6's ending (pic related)?
The answer given by the Rosatrice is that the red was used to counter the red, which is the only place in the story where that occurs, to kill and deny Erika from being present on the island. Basically that the ending is a red herring to make you think that there is someone playing two characters.
Erika gives an introduction that she is an added member to the list. Battler says that even if she is included, the number would still be 17.

The ending, according to the theory, can be seen in two ways. That there are 16 people + Erika (with one person being two). Or that there is no Erika added in the game, making it 17 + no Erika. If Erika were ever to come on the island, she would be dead on arrival. The point of this is that Tohya let the mystery fans add an extra person on the island so that they can get more clues. After the failure of ep 5, the mystery fans decided to just fuck around and cause chaos, which resulted in the logic error. After Tohya got out of the logic error, Battler states in red that even if she would go on the island, the number would not change. This is used rather well in general, since it denies the mystery fan of an extra player. There are only the characters that were on the island at the time and no one else will be permitted. This is why they had to create Black Battler. They couldn't add another character, so they just changed one character's personality.

This is actually a better answer to the whole 16 + Erika answer since it does involve the plot and what happened outside the meta. The 16 +1 is used to help create the illusion of Shkannon but doesn't explain how it destroys Erika. The Rosatrice answer of 17+0 is an adequate explanation for how Battler and Beatrice killed Erika in ep 6.

Even if you think that Rosatrice is a bad theory, this alternate explanation for the ending of ep 6 is rather good and well thought out.

So, Rosatrice say that the red "There are only 17 people [on Rokkenjima]" was referring to after Erika was killed with that red? That it *was* 18, but after Erika was killed it turned to 17? I just want to know if I'm understanding this correctly.

What's the Rosatrice explanation for the phone stuff in Episode 5? Does Yasu and Shannon still count as separate "people" in that theory?
>>
>>14890867
>That it *was* 18, but after Erika was killed it turned to 17?
Ehhh, no.
The total number of people on the island is 18 at the beginning of ep 1. However, with Kinzo dead, as stated in red in ep 4, that makes 17. If there is someone playing two people, that makes 16.

The ' ''There are only 17 people [on Rokkenjima]" was referring to after Erika was killed with that red?''referes to 17 people on the island plus a dead Erika. 17+ 0 = 17.

The Rosatrice theory proposes that Erika was never added to that number. She was dead on arrival and dead people do not count as people. This is why Kinzo does not count as a person on the island, because he's already dead. The same thing is applied with Erika.

I hope I've correctly explained to your satisfaction.

Two answers. First answer is that it's a tape recording. Unsatisfying but completely plausible. Second answer is that it's someone using another name (calling themselves the baby or whatever). Erika rightfully counters it by saying that it's simply someone using another name and that there is only one person with the power to do so. However, it is never stated in red, she only states it in blue, and as such, it doesn't limit the people who could call themselves other names. Rightfully, servants are the only people who have different names but because it is not stated that only servants can change their name, it leaves the window open to anyone to use the same trick. I personally think that Natsuhi telling only Shannon what her favorite season is is a too obvious red herring.

In the Rosatrice theory, Yasu simply doesn't exist at all. Shannon and Kanon are separate people. Personally, with that theory, it makes ep 2 much more funny. Kanon was walking around one night in the garden, thinking about Jessica, when some weird lady comes to her, talks about love, then mysterious vanishes out of nowhere. (pic related, people think it means Kanon was having some delusion or some shit, but the manga states that there is no personality disorder, only one person playing different roles).

As for >>14875806
>I wonder what he thinks of the manga. Is there any possible way to still twist this into the Rosatrice theory?
The answer is easily that it cannot be trusted at all. It was not seen by a detective and should be absolutely taken with a grain of salt. Funny enough, something that isn't mentioned in that 8 hour video, is Rosa's confession in ep 7. Isn't it ironic that Rosa's confession is actually included in ep 7 and is completely dismissed and ignored by Will who just blurs ''meh, I've already heard this before''? If Rosa is actually the real culprit, she did in fact confess in ep 7 along with Yasu.

Another point to bring up is in ep 7, Yasu talks to Kurasawa about how great And Then There Were None was but has a flaw. Namely the ending. If the ending were removed, it would be a masterpiece. I've read a few second hand detective theory novels that mention this point as well, that diehard agatha consider it a masterpiece but would have been perfect without the ending. With the story ending with the suicide at the end. It could be argued that Umineko does the same but rather than leave it open ended in that way, it creates a red herring with a false culprit.

Interestingly, there's a book called Pierre Bayard's Who Killed Roger Ackroyd which explores the fact that Poirot got the wrong culprit, although I find the book's logic faulty, it does bring a point that a detective and reader could be tricked into finding the wrong culprit.

>Rightfully, servants are the only people who have different names but because it is not stated that only servants can change their name, it leaves the window open to anyone to use the same trick
The problem I have with this is that it's stated multiple times that "Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented". There are never any hints that other characters than Shannon and Kanon has multiple names

>I find the book's logic faulty, it does bring a point that a detective and reader could be tricked into finding the wrong culprit.
To expand on that point, it's also something Ryukishi07 wrote about concerning anti-mystery and anti-fantasy and is reflected equally in Higurashi. If all the evidence is presented and the story points to a culprit and then, in a later sequel, it's revealed with the same presented evidence, but with added light, that the culprit is really someone else, what does it mean? Ryukishi07 dubs this the anti-mystery.

A good example is Shion and Mion. In ep 2 of Higurashi, Mion is clearly shown to be the culprit and even confesses that she is the culprit. But what if ep 5 were never released? By that point, the reader assumes that Mion is clearly the culprit when she is innocent. This is an equal point of whether or not Eva killed anyone other than Natsuhi and Krauss, as the Rosatrice theory states, or whether she killed everyone afterwards. Same thing with Yasu and with Kyrie. I still personally think that Ryukishi07 purposefully made Kyrie the 'true' culprit and left it as that. The anti-mystery like with Mion in Higurashi, but without a follow up.
>>
>>14890973
Absolutely. There are two possible candidates other than Yasu who could have done. Namely, the person who killed Nanjo was Kyrie or George.
The Rosatrice theory explains that Rosa gave Shannon poison rather than sleeping pills. George tried to revive Shannon but couldn't. Nanjo came to see George and was attacked by him after he found out that she wouldn't wake up. He shot him but didn't kill him. When people found George's body, Battler never actually saw George's body nor confirmed his death. It is plausible that George was still alive, got up near the end of the day, found Nanjo and killed him. Rosatrice gives the explanation that the reason why the bank number was added in ep 3 but not in ep 5 was basically because George knew the number and was dying. I personally also don't know why Yasu would add the bank number on the wall in ep 3 but not ep 5.

The second culprit, Kyrie, could have been the one who killed everyone and survived being killed by Eva after she shot Hideoyoshi. As this also applies to both George and Kyrie, the red at the end, stating everyone died, does not give the time of death, only the confirmation. The weasel out of this red is simply that someone declared dead by the rdd killed before being declared dead. The only candidates is simply George and Kyrie.

Another fact that I should bring up, which is always contested, is that Yasu, stated by the red, could not have killed Nanjo in ep 3. The rules state that if someone finds the gold, the murders done by Beatrice would end. If someone else kills, then there's nothing Beatrice can do. This is stated in red by meta-Beatrice, the accumulation of all Beatrice in the story, including Yasu. So Yasu, does not have to be omniscient to know if someone finds the gold. The red just makes it so. There isn't a second clause in the letter that Beatrice gives, that the person who finds the gold *must* tell everyone to stop the murders, only to find the gold and that the murders stop. It also begs the question as to what Yasu was doing when everyone was in the guest house. Why wasn't keeping an eye on the only building where everyone was holding up? The endless answer is that ''huuurrrr she's not omnicient, she can't be everywhere at once'' which ignores the obvious fact that EVERYONE was in one location, so Yasu doesn't have to be everywhere to notice two adults leaving the building.

Yasu killed Nanjo also isn't comprehended by anyone as well. Why did Yasu kill Nanjo? Some people claim that Yasu just did it because of some grudge, some say it's because, hey, it's the end, why not kill and just stay with Jessica? But it lacks a coherent motive.
However, in ep 8 of the manga, there's a flashback kakera image that shows Yasu being the one that kills Nanjo. Even if the manga shows this, it does not confirm that Yasu killed Nanjo, nor does it refute the red that Yasu should not have killed once the gold was found.

>>14891000
I actually agree. It's possibly the only flaw I can think of concerning this. On that fact alone, only Shannon and Kanon could be the culprits but in ep 3, Battler also mentions that Jessica could have done it with multiple personality or a different name or whatever, which isn't denied by Eva-Beatrice.
>>
>>14891036
I can't stress this point enough. Magic is created by establishing rules and creating mystery so that it seems unexplained. Destroying those rules destroys trust.

I always see many people saying that the Rosatrice theory adheres too much on the notion that the author cannot be trusted, which I don't agree since it just puts grains of skepticism, even if it is a valid criticism of the theory, but it is worth noting that people are very willing to throw the trust concerning Beatrice and her promise that she will stop the murders if the gold is found.

I don't think Yasu knew that Eva solved it, since she never said anything about it to anyone. It's stated in Episode 7 that Eva and Hideyoshi were accomplices in Episode 3, so Yasu probably just though Eva kept helping her with the ritual, so she had no reason to stop killing

>>14891062
It's also a devil's proof that Yasu knew that Eva solved the Epitaph and found the gold, along with Rosa. The problem I have is that Yasu should have seen both Rosa and Eva leave the guest house. Where was Yasu the whole time? The answer given is always ''huurr she's not omniscient, she obviously didn't know Eva solved it'' but there is no proof that Yasu didn't know, and it can be argued that Yasu could have perfectly seen Eva and Rosa since everyone was in a single small building. How can you not see two adults leave the one place everyone is hold up?

Noticeably, Yasu does not kill anyone after the first twilight except for Nanjo. She even doesn't kill him and locks him in a closed room.
Something that the Rosatrice theory notes is that all the murders done by Beatrice are done in a closed room while every other murder done by a second culprit (either George, Eva or Kyrie) is always done in the open.

Yasu did not kill Nanjo for the ritual. She basically killed him for no reason. Being an accomplice doesn't really change that fact.
>>
>>14891062
I also find it interesting how Rosa immediately gives shit to Eva about not following the rules. Red herring, as Ryukishi07 states but it's still funny.

I always find it interesting that the manga shows Eva strangling Natsuhi and Krauss.
Something that is obvious is that Eva was the one serving tea in ep 3, which Natsuhi and Krauss both took. A mutable blade could easily be refering to poison but funny enough, it shows Eva strangling Krauss with rope.

I don't agree with you that Eva had the Stakes. Did Yasu just give her the bag of Stakes? Why? The Rosatrice theory has the explanation that Eva poisoned Krauss and Natsuhi because their family was the only family that had no one murdered, so Eva killed him because they were the likely suspects. And that it was Nanjo who made it seem as a suicide.
There is always the possibility that Yasu (just like Nanjo) added the Stakes to the body after finding both dead.

There is no actual proof to know which method was used to murder Krauss and Natsuhi. Was it done by only strangulation like that images suggest or was poison enough?
>>
>>14891132
The VN says that Krauss and Natsuhi had rope marks on their necks
>>
>>14891141
And were found hanging in the arbor iirc.
Rope marks doesn't rule out poison, it simply puts emphasis on strangulation.
>>
>>14891152
No, they were laying on the ground, like the top of the page shows
>>
>>14891161
I might be forgetting something or confusing a murder with another one.
>>
>>14891132
>Was it done by only strangulation like that images suggest or was poison enough?
I think it was both. It's pretty unlikely that Eva would be able to strangle a big man like Krauss, so I think she used poison to knock them out, and then used the rope to make sure they were dead

There's nothing odd about Eva's behavior. People will make up any possible fact and evidence to confirm theories that they have already accepted as truth.

The furthest someone has complained about Eva's behavior was when she explained to Battler that she wasn't the culprit because it was too obvious that she could be the culprit and her weird mention that the deaths in the first twilight looked like makeup.

>>
>>14891740
Daily Reminder that Eva actually tried to get on well with Ange at first, but due to a certain witch telling Ange to never smile at Eva no matter how well she treated Ange, it eventually led to that situation on Eva's deathbed.

Obviously that's no excuse for Eva, as she was still an unjustifiable bitch in the end, but it should be noted.

Yeah, I'm aware, I don't think Eva is the devil or anything (especially with how traumatized she was and how the public was all over her,) I just think it's weird when some people try to shift the blame entirely on Ange when she was a literal child and didn't know any better. There's really no excuse to abuse and mock a child no matter how terribly they treat you when you're the adult in the situation and are supposed to know better.

That said, the scenes in EP8 with Ange and Eva are cute as fuck. If only they had gotten close in less fucked up circumstances.
