YouTube keeps raising the bar for views - remember when Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" was super popular with 25 million hits?
Nowadays any Vevo release has 100 millions with ease, and you can start considering it a success if it hits 500 millions.

Sorting by views and getting old content might mean the community keeps dropping.

Where are the japs, then?

I don't mind having an account since it makes it more exclusive and I'm also okay with NND charging once a month for premium (I wish it was cheaper like $3 instead). I'd rather pay than deal with ads like with Youtube.
>>
>>14853185
>>14871261

You should sort by Mylists. Always.

Anyway, Niconico is perfect for me except for the dated player and free accounts.

I mean, look at this: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm28345092

>bitrate: 649 kb/s
>Stream #0:0(und): Video: h264 (High) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(tv, smpte170m/unknown/unknown), 1280x720, 520 kb/s
> Stream #0:1(und): Audio: aac (LC) (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 125 kb/s

The audio is OK, but that video bitrate is unnecessarily constricting, and more limiting than Youtube in 2010, yet alone today.

Furthermore, the author should of made it 480p to conserve quality, but the encoding was left in their hands. Usually, I think this is a good thing, because you can make a high detail render on Niconico without worrying about re-encoding. However, the 700kb/s and 40MB limit for free users, and the 100MB limit for Premium users is damned limiting in this day and age.

When I reupload videos, I usually have to run them through avisynth to make them presentable on Youtube because of encoding oddities and artificially low resolutions.

>>

That's because they're in ridiculous resolutions with ridiculous frame rates. They might as well just distribute the models and dance files if they're going to use 300mb for a 5 minute segment.

>>
How is NicoNico on copyrighted material?
I know Japan in general is strict on Piracy, but what about using snippets of animu and games?

Can people upload fandubs, fansings and whatnot? I see it a lot during streams, but not so much when it comes to uplodaded videos.

Are takedowns frequent? Efficient?
>>
>>14873124
It depends on the anime. I know Fuji TV are one of the stricter ones when it comes to taking down their stuff.

It's miles better than Youtube though.
>>
Just as an example of how fucked up the site is, today I tried to upload a video but since I was using the English version of the site, it wouldn't let me upload it, I had to switch to the Japanese version to do it.
After the video finished uploading, it showed me an error message and took me back to my profile page, with the video nowhere to be found.
>>
>>14873747
I wish every Japanese site treated English speakers that way. Upload western trash to western sites
>>
>>14873747
It was intended to keep non-speakers segregated. If you read the Japanese docs, the process is pretty simple.
>>
>>14854856

Don't non-premium have to make a new video and reset the stream every half hour?
>>
>>14871221
It's inconvenient for everyone, what if you just want to share a video with someone who hadn't heard of the site ever in their lives? They have to go through the process of making an account just to watch a video on a site they will probably never use again.
>>
>>14875941
You should question yourself as to why you want to share the video with them and why they wouldn't already have an account if they were interested at all in the material you were going to show them. If they're never going to use the site again, they most likely won't enjoy your video and you shouldn't be trying to send it to them in the first place.

Youtube allows souce uploads.
NND is 40mb 600kbps 1280x720 max for free accounts, 100 ∞ ∞ (in theory) for premium.
These threads are nothing but computer-illiterate poorfags bitching about nothing, anyway.
>>

Abenomics raised the price to 540¥ / $4.7454, which is still very much lower than competing sites.
Speed issues are legitimate complaints, only because they throttle non jp connections, but you should still be getting 1-3MBps. Jp speeds are as fast as the tubes allow; easiliy solved by using a vpn.

You pay for it, but not with money.
The youtube model is based on targeting their entire website at retards who are:
A. Too tech illiterate to install a decent adblock
B. Have the free time and stupidity to spend hours every day doing nothing but watching youtube videos
...which just so happens to be the 13 year old boys demographic.
So now Youtube's entire business model and website design are geared towards making it attractive to said 13 year old boys and promoting content these 13 year old boys would enjoy. This is where dumb features like autoplay, "Recommended for you" and "Watch it again" come from. It's why youtube's default comment sorting is so retarded, and why shit like the "Trending" page and "Music" category exist. Channels like smosh and finebros are what rakes in all the money, so google made a website that accommodates them.

Say what you will about NND (especially in recent years), at least they still function like a video sharing website and not some poor imitation of kids' TV. They know what they want to do and what niche they want to fill, they set out to do it, and for the most part they succeed. You, dumb gaijin, are not their target demographic. You should feel thankful they don't just block all non-Japanese IPs and be done with it.
When the userbase (and moreover - the HARDCORE users who are willing to pay a monthly fee) is your main source of income, you'll be doing what you can to appeal to them and do what's good for the users, rather than the whims and demands of faceless corporations and ad-generators. Just like in 4chan, I'd rather have this shitty captcha/pass system than have google dictate what the website should be.
>>
Shitty servers.
>>
>>14887247
Counter-argument:
You don't have to watch the videos that Youtube recommends to you, and you can subscribe to channels you do like and search for videos which are not pushed by Youtube.

Also, you can upload 4K60fps 20+ GB on Youtube for free, and you only take a slight hit in encoding quality.

Yeah, Youtube is not made for the 4chan/2channel crowd, but it doesn't actively try to remove content which isn't R-18.
>>
>>14848951
It's amazing how it feels like they haven't improved their shitty player or site at all in the past 8 or so years.

>>14896644
Niconico was originally a comment wrapper for Youtube. When Youtube cut the plug, the developers had to come up with a way to share videos while minimizing bandwidth.

This is one of those byproducts that remains a "feature," along with:
1. 100MB/40MB video limit
2. Low-quality mode
3. Users responsible for proper encoding
>>
>>14900051
Just because it was a necessity once is no justification for maintaining retarded restrictions
>>
>>14900187
Retarded might be different for the NND userbase.

Why don't all boards allow audio webms, which is only an artificial restriction by 4chan mods.
>>
>>14900199
I don't pretend that isn't retarded as well.
>>
>>14900365
it would change the nature of the boards pretty substantially, and consequently change the userbase

perhaps the website doesnt want to change, perhaps they do not want to make it easier for people to upload or watch

HTML5 usually just gives the video directly to the browser, unless the host implements DRM.

If your HTML5 video is shit, its probably some in-house player. Do you have an example?

Nicovideo's community is worse than Youtube's idiots. I like most of the dumb Touhou fad shit. Anything that involves two Touhous talking to each other and being dumb (lots of shorts, some series, some manzai) makes me smile even if it is really dumb all around.

As for the rest of the community I don't know too much about it, except that I'm subscribed to a couple live broadcast channels that mostly involve a girl talking with the screen and trading shit with a few hundred commenters.

So no one is into the vocaloid/utaite/odorite community?
>>
>>14924635
Lets start with simple stuff then. Most stuff I don't get, I see on the more pervert type videos.

What does NG mean?

Why do people spam stuff with slashes like "/hidden'"? Is it some sort of meme like how /b/ would tell people to post random words on other boards to unlock secret functions?
>>

NG means no good
/hidden is just a tongue in cheek inside joke
sources:

>>14925826
But here, probably specifically the NG function on comments.

You right click a comment and NG it to hide it. You can also set things so that you don't see comments NGed by other users: http://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/NG共有機能

You'll often see 黙ってNG, which means you should NG comments you don't like instead of responding to them.
