Just finished 楽園の守護者, one scenario of two in the アルカディアの灯火 dual game pack. As expected from EGS, it was fairly short, so I finished in one setting from the moment I started it. I've got mixed impressions. Light spoilers (mostly setting stuff that gets hidden and slowly revealed) below.

To start with, the scenario is what caught my attention from the start. A United Nations spec ops unit stealthing through a dead urban city to find and defeat The World's Strongest Man? Holy shit, how interesting, especially with the side note that humans and animals had been given supernatural powers. However, the scenario really didn't live up to my expectations for various reasons. The whole supernatural beings (SBs) setting was done a LOT better in the "Wild Card" series, in here it's really shallow and you only ever see 2 super-powers, and hear of a third one in flashbacks. The effect these SBs had on the word was interesting to hear about, briefly, but it can be summarized as "they all worked for the military and were nuke equivalents, the end". I won't lie, I misinterpreted the single screenshot I saw of the game (pic related), and interpreted the Strongest Man as a, like, martial artist or some such, but in reality he's a generic American/German/Aryan who's the military's Superman, saving 1000000 billion lives, etc. The problem with that is the Superman gone evil setting was done way better in "Irredeemable" or even Injustice. So from both fronts, I constantly had in mind superior works. This was disappointing. Most of the appeal of fighting the fucking "WORLDS STRONGEST MAN" was taken away by the focus on the 干渉 device making him really weak close range, and subsequently having 99% of the action and planning focusing on getting it near him to weaken him, removing any clever mind games or underhanded tricks, it's alllll about the device. That said, the scenario was good enough for me to tear up at the end, and thanks to being so short, the plot kept me entertained despite being disappointing. The strongest part of this scenario, I think, is the fact it tells a fairly concise story with a respectable degree of brevity, no choices or padding. I enjoyed that a lot. The protagonist is a cool dude too so it all rounds out.

The music is nice, but it fades out before looping which is pretty distracting. There are 8 tracks, 7 of which I like and 3 of which I really like, so most of the time I enjoyed what was playing. The lack of voices was surprisingly not a big deal, by the end I hardly noticed. Given that only one brief scene even has girls speaking, and the price of the game, I think that was a good choice.

The visuals were really good. I took very well to the artist's style (which I can imagine many disliking), so despite the entire story being told through CGs and 2 sprites (that don't change expression) I never thought poorly of the presentation. Bits from CGs were re-used effectively to convey action, and in particular the ending CGs were great.

Being both short and a non-school setting, I come away from 楽園の守護者 with a very positive impression. I give it a 7/10. Despite my misgivings with the scenario (written by 健速), I really did enjoy the game and it was well worth the 1050円 I paid for it, especially since there's 2 games in 1 here and マリーベル looks like it was better received. Not as interested in that setting though.
>>
>>14750494
Oh yeah, forgot to mention my last favourite part.
At the very beginning of the game, soldiers mention that The World's Strongest Man had a short temper and would yell at waitstaff in restaurants and whatnot if the food was late or some other trivial stuff. Though out the entire game, he was characterized literally as a 救世主 (see the name), but the whole time I kept thinking... but the dude fucking yelled a waiters, that's a dick move, what the fuck. Damaged his character for me significantly even though it was only a couple lines in the beginning of the game.

The presentation looks great to me except the huge frame drop. It adds more atmosphere to the game, especially when they use different angles. Regular eroge presentation is boring and uninspired. It's acceptable but it's better to see some attention given to the backgrounds and sprites. I think it was neat how you have small details like certain characters showing up in the background before they talk to you.

Daitoshokan really drives this home I think. Too many games I play just have some SD panels and leave it at that, with the rest of the game in a couple CGs and sprites. Not that it really bothers me though because at the end of the day text matters way more in regards to whether I enjoy it or not
>>
>>14752681
Yeah, Daitoshokan was great presentation-wise, but it also had the writing to carry it. But then again I can see why a lot of companies don't do this. Why bother making things look good if the scenario itself is shit?

Also I've been wondering about minori for a while now. They seem relatively small, where the fuck did they get their funding? Their games have always had amazing production values, not to mention they had Shinkai a while back.

Might be a stupidly unreasonable request, but...

I once saw a video featuring the H-scene in White Album 2 ~closing~ and damn, did I fell in love with the Chiaki's santa claus scene. The dialogue was sensual, the music was gentle, and the execution was just affectionate.

Unfortunately, after a few months, I can no longer find the video anymore. It was as if it was deleted or something. I downloaded the game to try and dig it myself but I realize that the game was just too big for me to search the routes one by one when I don't even like the game that much.

By any chance, does anyone have a video link for the H-scenes for White Album 2 ~closing~?

>It is not women that ruin things, but men that let them.
Again, this is a leap of logic. What some retards with power at the UN do isn't representative of the opinion of all women, or people. In reality, most women, and most people, don't give a shit about what you masturbate to at home, much less drawings. Besides, there are a lot of men who ruin shit too. People ruin shit. Do Obama or Bush represent the opinion and doings of all men? Not mine, that's for sure. You should be attacking the UN; attacking "women" is completely missing the point.
>>
>>14753557
If people attacked individuals instead of groups, things like racism and propaganda wouldn't exist and there would be no IP blocks on Japanese sites.

Also why should I attack the UN? CEDAW isn't representative of the views of the entire UN, is it?
>>
>>14753636
>If people attacked individuals instead of groups, things like racism and propaganda wouldn't exist and there would be no IP blocks on Japanese sites.
Yeah. I don't see your point, though. Are you saying it's fine to be short-sighted because other people are too?

>Also why should I attack the UN? CEDAW isn't representative of the views of the entire UN, is it?
Sure. If you can identify the actual problem better, that's great.
>>
>>14753670
I'm just saying you're hoping for too much. It's a limitation of humans to think that way.
>>
>>14753781
But not all humans think "that way". If it were a "human limitation" like you say, it would be impossible for anyone to get it, but several people do. Why? And even if it were some kind of biological limitation, it's irrelevant since speaking up when you disagree with something is a natural reaction and I won't stop doing it because it's supposedly futile, but I think you guys are smart enough. I do the same when I say a woman saying all men are rapists or some shit. I don't think I'm being insane here.

I mean, I can do that, but then it feels really broken. No interweaving of character interaction, icha, lewd, and story like a good route has, just constant icha and sex without constant breaks in understanding due to missing the entire plot, banal as it may be. I really don't enjoy it

They were pretty much the culmination of what the character fighting went through in the couple of chapters focused on him/her. Nevermind the last one or the fandisk one.

Finished Scarlett. Overall a decent time-killer, but I can't help but feel that it had trouble of deciding whether it wanted to be a plot or drama game.

Finishing the first two chapters (meaning half of the whole game) which had relatively little focus on character relations made me expect more over the top battles of wits and tricky politics, but from then on the game suddenly turns into more slow-paced drama. Plot wise the third past / flashback chapter starring a completely different set of main characters for most of the time had quite literally nothing to do with anything other than showing that like Shizuka herself, her mother and grandmother also longed for a chance at normal life which somewhat connects to the fourth chapter's thematic line between 日常 and 非日常. Seriously, the third chapter could have not existed at all and it wouldn't have had any bearing on the main plot.

The change from silly plot to attempts at heavier drama is really sudden and when the somewhat similar style continues in the final chapter (now starring the old characters) it feels kind of dreary due to how different the first two chapters were and how little they had in the way of characterizing the relationship between the two protagonists, not to mention the love story between Shizuka and Akito, the latter who was pretty much non-existent in the second and third chapters. I liked the idea of the ending itself, but the way everything leading up to it was structured made it sort of a killjoy and overall left me with a lukewarm impression.

It has been only one year dude. Leyline was a pretty succesful game and Union shift is a pretty old company so I dont think they have gone bankrupt or something, most likely they are just taking a break while spending all the money they gained from leyline.

らぶらぶらいふ ~お嬢様7人とラブラブハーレム生活~ is an eroge so decadent and shameless in it's own depravity that it's forcefully ripped apart my perception of eroge and why I play them and bared the ugly underbelly of lust for anime girls.

The first thing to understand is that the protagonist is truly a representation of the player, not in the sense that the scenarist, Kobayashi Kyou, wanted people to self-insert, but rather in that they conceptualized the simplistic desires of an eroge player and gave it physical form as a character. This is evident in the protagonists mission statement: make a harem. He repeatedly states that it isn't just a desire to fuck a lot, though he is a self-admitted pervert, but rather he wishes to form loving relationships with as many people as possible. This is a masterful summary of the average eroge player that cuts deep - moege are so popular due to their combination of both lusty sex and love, things that we want so dearly but were never given in life... however, much like the protagonist, eroge players aren't satisfied with just 1. Who plays a single route of a single moege and leaves it at that? No one. For it is not just quality, but quantity, that we desire. And so, an eroge player pumps and dumps not just sexual partners but romantic partners as well, with the powerful feelings of one relationship giving birth a stronger desire to feel them yet again, with another girl. That's the eroge player. A pervert, but one that wants more love than one girl can give.

To answer these desires, Kobayashi Kyou once again expressed his brilliance with a set of 7 archetypes so generic one can only balk at the sheer balls he has to play them off as original characters. And yet, it works, it works so damn well it's fucking frightening. One would expect an intelligent human being, a long term eroge player, to be above this kind of shit, but that is simply not the case. Despite how astoundingly bland each girl is, the sex and love their offer the protagonist is more than enough to sate the lust as expressed prior. Despite the girls having absolutely no unique qualities whatsoever, relationships with them are just about as satisfying as those found in longer, full-length moege... and that's where Kyou's brilliance sets in and blew away my self-perceptions. I was on a quest find love in moege, and played them frequently to find the perfect girl to fall in love with and be loved... and every time I succeed, I'd move on to the next moege, looking for another such girl. The truth is, I, like most eroge players and humans in general, was overestimating my own complexity, and Kobayashi Kyou knew this. In truth, even the most horrifically generic characters, even the most egregious archetypes are fully satisfying for the lust of sex and love. By making characters scrape the bottom of individuality's barrel, he shoves the readers face into the reality of their own shallowness. Like cows gobbling feed, we'll eat up this らぶらぶらいふ he's created with our eyes wide in joy and pleasure.

A lesser man would have feigned depth, or cut the harem down for more development to main heroines, or perhaps forgone love entirely and focused on sex as so many nukige do. But Kobayashi Kyou is not a lesser man, and thus we have this masterpiece, a harem of 7 slates blanker than white, emracing us with their marshmallow bosoms, an embodiment of all the Joys of the eroge world. All is right, God is in his heaven. Final rating: 10/10, no question.

>>
>>14760115
I should clarify it's actually a nukige, there is very little in the way of the icha / lovey scenes in comparison to H-scenes. In fact I forget exact details but I'm pretty sure for certain characters they just didn't include them falling in love with Mc, it cut straight from "he's a nice guy" to "master/husband/m'lord/darling/etc I'm in your harem and love you". I think I painted like a moege to set the scene unconsciously.
>>
>>14760155
Honestly 10/10 or were you kidding? I honestly could not tell.
>>
>>14760229
Objectively, if I were speaking to a close friend over a beer, I'd spill my guts that it's more of a 5/10, an average wank game which accomplishes nothing of note either as masturbation material or as a visual novel in general. But sober, I am sincerely impressed with the lengths the scenarist has gone, intentionally or not, to make the dullest scenario and dullest heroines literally possible... I genuinely can not imagine a game with a setting and characters more bland than this one. I genuinely cannot. And for that, it wins a 10/10. I don't foresee myself every playing a game more shameless of its depravity as a cultural black whole of brainless sex appeal and insipid romance.

I think it's telling that the sequel, らぶらぶプリンセス, has a different scenarist that apparently has tried to put together a plot about princesses and blood-line succession. I would not be surprised if that were desperate measure to climb out of the cultural dearth Kyou put them into. Or perhaps not, I'll have to play it to find out. I'll save that for the day when I dream of love again, however, so that my idealism can once again be stomped upon by the loving feet of nubile anime archetypes.

How long is Rin's route compared to Makoto's? I like Makoto well enough but the route just keeps going on without much sense that things are really progressing. If Rin's route has the same kind of pacing I'm going to have some real problems.
>>
>>14761271
I don't know about actual length, but Rin's route certainly feels a lot shorter, since it isn't anywhere near as boring. Everyone agrees that Makoto's route sucks, so just get through it and move on to the good stuff.

No, not really, if you don't like it within the first few hours, you probably won't like it at all. It's pretty much a slow SOL and is nothing like subahibi.

>I just couldn't get that aspect. I just saw it as a commentary about art and literature; and philosophical masturbation I guess.

I wouldn't have even minded all that if, the worst sin SnU committed was being boring. I've read NTR nukige with more engaging plot lines.
>>
>>14761614
Well, I'm reading it first and I like Makoto a lot and I'm still really bored and completely unable to tell how far I am through it because nobody seems to be doing anything. Naoya apparently just agreed to draw her or whatever so I guess stuff is finally happening beyond family drama that hasn't been fully explained.

But I guess I don't know if the other routes are better yet. They might end up as boring as this, especially since I can't go after Yumi. Well, she's basically Tsuki from AnG as a lesbian so I guess I can just read that again later if I want.
>>14761760
So Rin's route is about roughly the same length then? Well, guess I have to hope that she has some kind of surprise in store for me because I'm really not a fan of the character type she looks like.

This is the only VN in my life I've ever seen with a VNDB page listing ONLY the male main characters and ignoring the female heroines, rather than the other way around. This feels like justice somehow. It's especially funny because it lists their cameras which leads me to believe they were included because the editor liked camera stuff whereas the heroines didn't use cameras. Not sure about that though.

I always wondered how people got to buying games and it turns out when you have an interest in non-H VNs the amount which gets cracked and uploaded drops pretty drastically. Have to buy the vns if you want to read them.

Difference being is that pretty much every single H-game is uploaded. So you really get into the mindset that every VN gets uploaded. But then you get interested in doujin games and non-lewd games and the sudden drop in support is astounding. It makes me think most people downloading/playing these games (not necessarily here) don't actually read the stories but instead just hack by to get to porn. This is somewhat surprising because most h-game porn isn't even that good.

Thanks for taking the survey! Well, "game studies" are a thing since 10 years already and I presented it to my supervisor as just another gaming form. But I can't do "game studies" because that would mean that I'd need to research the games in the japanese original (I'm nowhere near able to read them in japanese) so I have to take another approach which is the "culture transfer through computer games using the example of visual novels". So I'm not primarly talking about moe moe porn girls but western influence in japan (especially 1853, 1945+), the genealogy of visual novels, then of course what visual novels are and the corresponding culture (e.g. comiket) and how these things come to the west (translation groups + companies). Well, the thesis is part of my masters exam but no, I dont need to do a presentation.

Well, I finally finished Nanairo. I repeat myself, from a thread or couple ago, but I really like the character dynamism in this game. The slice of life situations where everyone's talking with everyone were really enjoyable. The art is very pretty as well. The per-girl routes didn't have much difference between them, just the worst girl having a different outcome in the whole story. Music was ok. Ero was pretty good and, rather vanilla, which I enjoyed.

I'm happy that there's a sequel coming, Akeiro Kaikitan. I can see more of the crazy Aoi girl. Best oni.

I guess I'll either finally go for Baldr Sky or... I don't know, more having an inkling for comedy right now. Damekoi?

The people that will likely be playing these old games by then will also probably keep one of our relical x86/x64 processor architectures and a copy of Windows just as some people keep their Amigas and PC98s nowadays.

I bet emulation will be a breeze as well like how we can pretty much put a PC98 emulator on anything nowadays like a PSP or DS.

I just realized that language will evolve so much in 1,000 years that old games will be unreadable in the first place.

You have a point, since if we get to live 1000 years more then we probably have jumped the hurdle from being a Type0 civ into at least a Type1 civ on the Kardashev scale and adopted a global language.
Maybe English or a bastardization of it, so I guess some will be saved.

i'm having a hard time playing through the other heroines in pretty cation 2 after going for the heroine i wanted.

i usually don't have a problem playing through all characters but for this it feels weird to me.

the appended life for feburary came out too, if anyone was waiting for it.

I actually finished Chitose's route last week which leaves me with just Honami. The characters I felt are a bit on the boring side certainly not better than LxC1 and 2 but not worse than PxC 1.

Honami is insanely boring, in my opinion.
I didn't like any of the girls better than PC1's Sakura either.

Amakano 2's Honami was pretty shitty as well, I dont even remember any good heroine who has Honami as her name. I guess something wrong with honamis.

I don't know how much of this game is meant to be comedy, and how much of it is meant to be pure characterization that a Japanese reader would balk at, but this character's autism is truly hilarious. I burst out laughing frequently, I mean especially with pic related, her fucking expression is gold and he's just completely unaware. It seems like 笹木弓 hasn't written anything else which is a same because I like what I'm seeing here. At least 海法紀光 has some light novels according to vndb.

In fact, does anybody know who 笹木弓 is? I googled it and the lack of results implies to me that's a pen name.

Why aren't there any mother/son incest games with normal sized boobs? My mother doesn't have triple G cup boobs Japan and I'm going to guess neither do yours.

Fucking hell.

Large breasts are a symbol of motherhood.

Because if you're upgrading your mother to want to sleep with you, clearly you might as well "upgrade" her physically as well.

You think ISLAND will be inspired by Island?

If your game hasn't gotten a remake in 1000 years, it isn't very good, now is it?

I think a couple games I've played are pretty good but have 0 chance of 3000AD translations. Nanairo Reincarnation for instance.

I wonder if 3000 era Neo Tokyo's visual novel industry will be similar to modern EOPs in that all releases are translations of old visual novels. Why make new ones with 1,000 years of masterpieces have come out?
