Dancepad player reporting. Finally finished plowing through all of pre-Supernova DDR and all sub-12 ITG 1, trivial shit aside. To be honest those ITG 11s look more like DDR 15s than 16s, most of them requiring high footspeed and otherwise being very straightforward. Pandemonium E was the only one I had any problems with, being more stamina draining than the other ones. By comparison Paranoia Survivor MAX C took me about 50 tries to pass at all and I haven't really improved on it since then.
In case you're wondering it's Stepmania 5 custom theme with DDR timing and scoring. Ranks are still displayed incorrectly because SM is calculating the score independently from the theme, but whatever.

Just download it and dump into Themes folder.

Edit preferences.ini file in Appdata/Stepmania5/Save folder, or wherever your system dumps it.

Comes with the theme, Supernova 2 scoring option.

Also a nice little offhand pass from two weeks ago. Seems like 70% fake difficulty and 30% actual difficulty, definitely overrated.

Finally something legitimately difficult. Those step-step-jump patterns seem impossible for me to hit, so I just cheated them with two simple jumps to avoid ruining my score any further.
>>
>>14744096
The difficulty is just unbalanced, it makes me mad. I can pull off a 350combo in the beginning, then my health drops progressively until it reaches 0% and stays there for the last 30% of the song where I don't even know what I'm doing

Got this after minimal practice on minefields and the final speedup. Could probably push this into A, a lot of those greats were me mistiming my streams instead of difficulty.
A lot of those charts are definitely overrated by one rank. No excuses about novelty here, the devs had well established benchmarks in old DDR when they were rating them.
Delirium's next and I'm not thrilled by the perspective of getting stuck on it for weeks building my stamina. As draining as Pandemonium E and PSM C were, this one is even worse.

what do you recommend for a beginner to get into this stuff? i can do all the expert songs on miku but was looking for more, and pop'n music and iidx look really fun. do i have to just buy a controller immediately? i'm thinking of getting the dao pop'n music controller because it's cheaper and less complicated, but idk.

there's also an arcade near me but last time i went there i embarrassed myself in front of this cute japanese girl waiting behind me to play. i just stopped in the middle of the song and walked out (´・ω・`)
>>
>>14754160
for IIDX it's worth it to buy a controller if you're actually interested in the game, but before investing so much you should at least make sure you kind of like it.

Get LR2, there's plenty of BMS for IIDX and PMS for pop'n, and see if you like the style of play on KB, then invest in a controller.

Remember, if after you get the controller you suddenly realize you hate the game, you can always sell it, there's a marketplace on sows.
>>
>>14754160
play in the arcade and see what you like
personally i'd advise against a pop'n controller unless you can have it set up semi-permanently, it's a lot more of a hassle than IIDX is to play

If I plug encoders into an extra port on a DAO Popn PCB will they work? (Totally noob at building controllers/hardware)
>>
>>14755220
No. The firmware only expects digital inputs for each button.

...Encoders for what?
>>
>>14755259
Refit an old Dao Popn PCB to make a SDVX Controller. Just an idea I had.

On that note, does anyone have a template to make new case art for a DAO Popn?
>>
>>14755266
You can use an Arduino for the encoders.
>>
>>14755419
Wait, doesn't DAO use a general purpose PCB with inputs for like 10 buttons and two encoders?

He should be able to connect encoders to the spare inputs assuming he gets the wiring correct.

FPS if you're going to play BMS.
FP7 if you're going for AC data or CS games.
>>
>>14758823
Why? Aren't they pretty similar?
>>
>>14758823
Please explain, you can do all the said things with both controllers.

FPS is lite version of FP7 with smaller TT, FP7 being more AC accurate in dimensions.
>>
>>14758849
>>14758838
The FPS is a smaller controller, works well for people who don't have a dedicated setup, plus the TT lets you switch from AC distance to KOC distance, which would definitely help in Insane BMS charts.

The FP7 is close to arcade accurate, with the TT being bigger than the FPS but still smaller than the PEE, it's also got no adjustability and is bigger overall (It's a bit bigger than a DELL Optiplex SFF computer), it's overall better for a dedicated setup.
>>

In addition to everything already stated, if you ever plan on doing art mods the FP7 supports it but the FPS doesn't. The FPS has a layer of black ink printed directly onto the back of the acylic panel, but the FP7's are clear and have metal underneath so you can sandwich art in between.

Is there a chart for what the dan symbols are
>>
>>14768271
You were playing with f.lux on? ayy lmao.

Didn't the abysmally inconsistent monitor check tick you off or anything?

For further improvements, try closing literally everything on your computer, including torrent clients, browsers, steam, music players, etc.

Oh, and if you find yourself feeling like the music is on time but the chart is early/late, then instead of changing audio offset dick around with HD versus HD*.
>>
>>14768427
>instead of changing audio offset dick around with HD versus HD*
HD* 0.0 is equivalent to HD -1.0.
>>
>>14768427
>HD vs HD*
what's the difference?
>>
>>14768445
Ehh, for some reason when I changed it I felt that it was the notescroll that changed, not the music offset, like I would have to hit when they were above the red line, but the hits were still in time with the music.

Probably just me being retarded.
>>
>>14768458
The offset doesn't change the audio at all. It has always only ever been the visual offset (where the notes appear relative to the red line).
>>
>>14768471
Wait, are you serious?

I was under the impression that there were two adjustable values.

First is the adjustment of the audio relative to the notescroll, so that if you played solely by ear you'd still be on time.

Second is the adjustment of the notescroll relative to the red line, so that if you played with no sound you'd still be on time.

So you're telling me that if I adjust the offset so that playing deaf, I hit equal amounts of fasts/slows, and playing with sound, I hit more slow, there's no way to adjust just the offset of the sound without somehow reducing the latency of my audio setup?
>>
>>14768427
Idk it always capped at 59.99
>>
>>14768480
>there's no way to adjust just the offset of the sound without somehow reducing the latency of my audio setup?
Correct. Think about it. If the audio is too delayed in a keysounded game, how can you make the audio play earlier? It would have to predict when you'll hit keys (can't) or make the BGM track play early (would make everything sound weird) or do something fancy like play the first part of keysounds but only make the player responsible for the later half of keysounds (would probably sound weird, and Konami probably isn't competent enough to do that).

Also, IIDX is notoriously laggy in terms of audio. Nobody plays modern IIDX by audio.

>>14768509
They are not.
>>
>>14768509
No, they're not really the same.

Let's say that without sound, I play with an offset of +2.0. This means that purely visually, I hit the notes on time.

If I turn on my sound and the audio lags by say, another +1.0, then playing by ear I'd have to move to +3.0.

However, if I change my offset to +3.0, then playing visually I'll be early by 1.0.

>>14768514
Yeah, I guess it makes sense that keysounds can't play too early.

Are there any tips for reducing audio latency? I've got my headphones plugged directly into my computer's headphone port and I'm pretty sure I don't have any enhancements or other drivers running.
>>
>>14768514
>>14768530
I can't read, disregard that I suck cocks
>>
>>14768445
Is this proven? Are there any other changes other than timing? And why have that option when you can just change the timing like before?
>>
>>14768555
I experimentally verified it myself.

My guess is that it's an option so that the "default" feels more consistent between machines. HD* is meant for newer monitors that are larger/cheaper/laggier.

Ok, my LR2 hitsounds suddenly went mute.
The great judge count also disappeared completely.
What do I do? Is reinstalling my only option?

Same.
When I first cleared 7th dan, I immediately tried out 8th, and died on "onii-chan machine gun" song right at the end chord stream. And this was around a month ago.

I tried 8th dan today, and got my pussy smashed by Präludium.

I guess I'm getting worse.

Trying to get into IIDX; played Copula for the first time the other day and had a hell of a time with it.

Thinking of getting an FP7. Do you guys prefer simfile players or ACData for Bemani titles? Guess either way I'mma have to find a SOWS invite, yeah?

I prefer AC but you can easily find and play LR2 before you get an invite to sows.

AC, because the timing is less strict on LR2

Also because AC is a bitch to get running, but doesn't have a random chance of crashing every 5 songs or something.

It also just looks nicer and I get to dick around with rivals, and additionally you can navigate AC with just the controller, whereas LR2 requires a keyboard.

For you ddr/stepmania players, what pads do you use to play?

So far I've looked at the omega pdd pads, the ion metal pads and those energy metal pads, but I'm not sure which is good.

Those ion pads looks nice but apparently are bad....I'm not sure what to get anymore. I'll probably go back to getting another cheap foam pad

Not really, you just have to disable a few PC settings and you're good to go.
LR2 on the other hand is a nightmare to set up (or at least it looks like it; I haven't bothered installing it)
>>
>>14772343
Read the instructions in the PCBID thread to get a new one.
>>
>>14772429
Well, it's a bitch in that you have to actually get data, pcbid, bemanitools, and that you have to set up card ids and so on.

After you've got it working you just need to remember to exit literally everything on your computer before running the game, and it's fine then.

LR2 is much easier to setup if you don't have internet ranking and just want to practice shitting around on various maps or whatever.

while we're on the topic, what's up with the kyu courses below the dan courses? what purpose do they serve?
>>
>>14772469
They're for noobs.

It's also slightly confusing because kyu courses are "backwards" compared to dan.

I think the lowest here is 7th kyu (so like all 1s) going up to 1st kyu, then 1st dan through 10th dan then kaiden, IIRC.

Fuck if I know. I'm only 5th dan.

So I'm trying to migrate to LR2HD because it offers promise of greater stability and fewer restarts, but I guess I'm an idiot or something and can't get passed this shit.

My computer is set to japanese locale which is the only sort of remedy to this shit I've read about online.

My Nihongo is not proficient enough to know exactly why this fucking thing is yelling at me.

Do I have to setup an account online or something? I didn't have to do any of this shit for the version I use now as far as I remember.

Anyone care to she some light on this?

Compared to what? I hope you don't mean vanilla LR2
>>

It still means you are the only one having these problems with AC data.

>>14773024
Did you make a copy of config.xml and rename it to config.xmh for LR2HD in LR2files/Config? They both have different config files.
>>
>>14773024
Yeah, you need to create an account. Choose an ID and Password. The small window on the right tells you to choose another name. The one on the bottom forces you to create an account.

If you already have an account, search your username here http://www.dream-pro.info/~lavalse/LR2IR/search.cgi (choose プレイヤー検索 for the search). Then check the LR2IR box and copy your LR2 ID in the text field to retrieve your play data from your account.

I'm not entirely sure what version I use, but probably. Why?

>>14773046

I haven't done anything. Just downloaded this right from sows and tried to run it, just got this. Do I need to do something along the lines of this?

>>14773054

I'm fairly certain I don't have an account because when I play it always says something about no network something or other. Basically nothing I do gets recorded online (thank god).
>>
>>14773079
>I'm not entirely sure what version I use, but probably. Why?
Because at least based on my experience, LR2HD has been a lot less stable than base LR2.

>>14773085

I just checked, it says LR2beta3 100201.

I get like maybe 10-15 songs in my SIRIUS and above folder before it fucks up. Everything lower it seems I can play almost indefinitely. I don't know why this is.

So on all these AC data torrents, do they only include the songs unique to that release, or every song (except the ones that were removed between iterations) including ones from past iterations?

If it's the latter, wouldn't the only reason to download anything but the latest release be to play removed songs?

If it matters, I'm more referring to Pop'n. Been wanting to get into it.
>>
>>14774537
They include every previous version's music, other than removed songs obviously (but that's what omnimix is for).

>If it's the latter, wouldn't the only reason to download anything but the latest release be to play removed songs?
Yeah, pretty much. The newest release is generally all that matters, but sometimes people might want older versions to go with specific setups or if they work better offline, stuff like that
>>
>>14774565

So I'm reading all the descriptions on these and they all mention being for actual Pop'n cabinets with BemaniPC or what have you.

Is that all these are for, people who actually own machines?

My friend told me these things boot up like regular games on any ol' computer.
>>
>>14774645
They do, pop'n is just one that's a bit more dependent on having specific hardware, at least Sunny Park is. It'll work fine, the timing won't be off or anything, you might just get some really slow loading screens or something.
>>
>>14774537
It's the same as actual AC. Includes all previous songs, except for those that have been removed.

If you get Omnimix it includes literally everything that's ever been in the game.

The only reason to get something older is to run it offline.
>>
>>14774645
all of the ac data rips on sows are meant to be ran on personal computers, and most of them work decently fine. i don't know why but sunny park runs kind of shitty on my laptop while lapistoria works perfectly, the only thing thats wrong with sunny park is that after the start of every round there'll be a long white screen that i have to wait through, its not that big of a deal though.
>>
>>14774512

Play hard 11s, then some 12s, and then go back to 11s when I'm tired?
Start off with 12s, rest when I'm tired and then keep going with 12s?
Or just start with 12s and ignore the fatigue and keep mashing away?

I have one nearby, but it is really picky about accepting inputs. Out of what you listed, definitely go with Omega pads. They're not metal pads, but they're easily the best "hard" pad you can get at the moment; they work far better than any DDRgame pad. Aside from that, unless you can find a second-hand discontinued metal pad i.e. a Cobalt Flux or Blueshark pad (not an easy find), I'd say PDP is your best bet.

Arcade pads are still the best to play on, however. That's what I use until I can get my own machine.

>>14776003
I wanted to get must songs since most of them won't get ported to arcade, but there just aren't enough 10s
