Get the lead in the first two rounds, no matter how small, and then snuff out all opposition with 1000 point hands. Do not riichi after you take the lead, if you deal in you won't have time to get it back.
If you couldn't get the lead early on: do you still have your dealer turn? If you do, start racking up honba. If you don't, you're probably screwed unless you can pull in a lot of dora. If you can't do that either, riichi and pray.
Mukoubuchi is a good manga that only has tonpuusens in it, they go over a few other strategies in it.

Speed is paramount. In the first couple of rounds, don't be afraid to open up your hand, even if it means going kata-agari for tanyao or fanpai. If neither tanyao or fanpai are practical, go for maximum tile efficiency and riichi as soon as you can. Don't be too eager to break up penchan waits to keep isolated middles - early tenpai on a penchan is better than a late ryanmen.
Dama is preferable once you're in the lead, but contrary to what the other guy said, it's fine to riichi if you have to, but only if: a) your lead isn't already big enough (ie 8000 point gap); b) your lead isn't so small that it's practically irrelevant (ie less than 3000 point gap). In the former case you don't need to riichi, and in the latter, the 1000 point deposit makes it much easier for others to overtake you.

Every time I make a new account to have a fresh start, I get higher and higher before I plateau.
First one was like 300 games, 2dan R150. Second went up to 2dan R1700. Third one went up to 3dan R1960 in two weeks in 100 games. The problem is that I eventually play too aggressively and start tanking my stats. When I make a new account, I remember the basics and I play better or something.

There's nothing you can do about someone getting big tsumos and overtaking your lead that way. If it's late in the game you can try to push with fast hands but beyond that it's usually not worth the risk of dealing in. Let the other players take that risk for you.
If you're lucky, they'll bust someone out winning off each other, but in the worst case scenario where you get second because someone gets big tsumos, that's not bad at all.
