I've never once thought that Renko had a connection to either despite her resemblance.
I believe the resemblance merely exists to remind us of the heroines and of their relationship with Yukari, if Maribel=Yukari.
Alternatively, Renko and Maribel is merely to remind us of Reimu and Marisa's relationship.
If Maribel=Yukari, then I think that Yukari herself might be reminded of Renko and sees her in Reimu/Marisa.
That depends on just what happens to Maribel, although I favor the idea that she becomes lost in ancient Gensokyo and separated from Renko at some point.
