Sub fleets belong in Orel/ranking and CLTs are only acceptable when below 80 or grinding quints, at least for me. Winning against BB/CV is a matter of AS and adjusting for enemy comp.
The lazy way of ensuring AS is to have one more CV(L) than the enemy and fill them with one bomber in a medium or large slot and the rest green (saiun is optional). After that, you make a judgement on the number of CA/BB you need, if any, to help take out their counterparts. Usually you'll have enough slots for at least one ship for levelling and a Katori-class.

Here's an example of how to win in PVP with small ships. Note how my cute little Hagikaze still isn't kai, but managed to destroy Shoukaku all by herself. I wish I could've used a tougher opponent, but this was the strongest fleet in the list. All the other battles were easy S ranks.

And trust me, even with elite DD, you can be slammed by a C rank because of ugly aerial strike than Yamato class pummeling your ass.
And that's with a 4 kanmusu fleet. A full elite fleet would be even less possible for a full DD fleet.
