'Sexual orientation' is a social construct developed in the West in the last century. Before that, sexuality was not part of your identity. Fucking other people of the same gender was something you did, not something you were.
Marriage was not originally a significantly romantic thing. It was just a way for a man to get exclusive rights to a woman, for a woman to guarantee offspring, and for a society to streamline the whole child making and raising process. As such, marrying a person of the same gender made no sense until affection towards the same gender became a romantic thing.
