Strange, I re-read that just a few days ago. It kinda makes me sad that I'll never get to go exploring in Japan like that.
Kinda unrelated but does anyone know of any sites that do translations for scary stories from 2ch and/or other japanese sites?

Because I'm a NEET and I've been one for years now. I never went to highschool and I never plan on doing so. I've never worked and never will. I live with my parents and surely will until I kill myself.
I don't get autism bux even though I probably qualify but it's too much of a pain to go through the steps to get it.
Basically there's no way I'll ever have enough money to go there even for a short trip and there's no way in hell I'll ever teach english there. Putting aside my utter lack of qualifications, there's no way I could do it due to anxiety/general mental issues.
It probably sounds like I'm giving up before trying or that I "don't care enough about it to work for it" but that's basically my life. Sorry for rambling.

I'm sure you can get to the nearest freight port with that much money. From there, simply smuggle yourself on one of the larger cargo ships (make sure it actually goes to Japan by inconspicuously asking crew members). Don't forget to bring food rations and drink for at least two weeks of open sea though. Good luck!

At first it did gave me a faint desire to try it too, but then I thought about how I sadly could not see the beauty in some abandoned train stations in my country, especially when they are full of vulgar graffiti, cigarette buds and trash.

I was still under the effect of this story so I looked around today for similar opportunities.
I could get on a train and go to a neighbor country, it wouldn't even be that expensive.
However, upon searching for some photos and checking some street views on google maps, it's pretty much the same as here.
Guess a 200-250km distance isn't far away enough to encounter a more intense change.
Anyway, as the guy said in the story, some people got off from the train, made some photos and went back with him on the next one.
He thought them to be train otakus, but that got me thinking, shouldn't the train otaku be even more enthusiastic? Or is it just "been there, saw that" for them?
This guy had a better adventure and made more use of his time given the circumstances.
Just going off into a way like that, just to explore, was fun in Japan. Have to do that more next time around.

There's nowhere to go in Florida, because there is no way to get to the train station.
I've rode the train once in my life, from Fort Lauderdale to Miami. There was a lot of beautiful graffiti.

On my only train ride halfway through some grandma got on and sat right next to me because of assigned seating. She used the complimentary WiFi to snap chat with her grandkids every 20 minutes or so.
After a while I realized that the ticket takers didn't care, so I got up and sat in the back of the train for the final hour in seats that probably were more expensive because of the extra legroom.
All in all it was very peaceful, especially the parts without the grannies sitting next to me as I read K-On. Though I have yet to experience VIP quality comfiness.

Because in the 1930s the automobile industries decided to create brand new paved roads, and highways were developed by the government as work for people during the depression.
Back then public transportation was good. The automobile industries made good on their word to revitalize shit (look up the GM streetcar conspiracy) and created fleets of quiet, clean, efficient buses. We actually have a very good bus transportation system when it comes to long-distance travel, but not enough people use it. And city buses aren't anywhere near that standard.

- Lower population density and greater distances between major population centres
- Policy choices such as the creation of the Interstate highway system (in the U.S.) and the Trans-Canada Highway
- Relative affordability of gasoline
- Car ownership promoted by trends in dwelling choice (more home ownership in suburbs, less condo rental/apartment rental/property ownership close to centres of employment)
- Relative weaknesses of public transit system
All of this also means that there is more incentives for continuing policies geared toward maintaining the suburban/automobile lifestyle because few people like politicians who disrupt the current state of affairs (Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was originally elected because his predecessors favoured public transit over automobiles; he promised to end the "war on the car")
The two big deciding factors though are population density and cost of fuel. Combined there is very little incentive for people to ride trains when intercity buses cost less because of those factors. I'm >>14609325 and I primarily chose the train because the departure times were more convenient than what the major bus companies offered. That meant I had to pay a premium for train travel: my ticket cost $60 and the same trip on a greyhound would have cost $25. Of course trains will always beat buses and planes in terms of comfort and being able to masturbate to JK porn in the on-board restroom.

Well, I imagine that there's *maybe* a kernel of truth to the streetcar conspiracy. The evidence suggests, perhaps, that the big auto companies saw an existing trend that had public support and decided to just accelerate the process by buying up track themselves in some cases (instead of waiting around for local governments to do the job).
I think we're getting a tad off track here though, since the post-war migration to the suburbs (which was a big driving force behind North America's doption of a car/highway centered society) would have happened regardless of whether cities relied on trams or buses for commuter transit.

Actually, I've been looking at Croatia too, but as I've said, I can't see anything truly different or special in a 200km radius and I don't have the money to go all the way to the sea.
I see many of you have the same desire, but let's be honest guys, we wouldn't really care much for a non-japanese landscape.
The main point of the 2ch OP's story was that it invoked an interest in us to try something similar (if, we were in Japan).
But I guess most of you know either way how the surrounding areas are for you and since none of us rushed out, I presume it's rather boring.
Besides, it would have nothing to do with /jp/ either, so linking from here to /trv/ is all we could do.
And then what? Post pictures of a small city or a forest? Most of us can see that any time close by.
There's also the lack of motivation and a specific goal.
2ch OP knew he would go to Koboro station, to look at the unique station and went on from there.
Now what about us, just pick out a village randomly? Chances are you won't see anything special there and even if you venture into the nearby wilds, you're lucky if you see an abandoned chapel at best. Meh.
