It still seems hard as fuck to me, to do that in under 1200 games. At 8th dan you get +90/+45/-150. And you need 1600 pts to get to 9th dan.
If we assume an equal distribution of 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th places you would need to have a 26.3 1s/2nd and a 23.7 3rd/4th place rate just to break even. Even at .28 vs. .22 it would take you 330 games alone to get from 8dan to 9dan. And this is the Houou lobby we're talking about. You might be able to get winning rates this high in lower lobbies but I would like to see anyone with stats like that in Houou.

Anyway, I am a believer in math, and math tells me that he cheated. There is a common saying that a world class player who plays with okayish amateurs will get a winning percentage of roughly 1/3. This guy had to play most of his games in Houou where the players are surely better then amateurs. But lets ge generous and say that he still was so incredibly good that he could manage to have a 1/3 chance to win each game there. Fuck lets even give him a 50% chance to win each game. This alone is basically impossible, because that's simply the kind game Mahjong is: There is a lot of luck involved, especially in winning. It doesn't matter how good you are if you don't get any hands capable of winning you might not end up in last place because you not deal in since you are so good at tile reading, but no matter how good you are, you are not going to win the round. That's why a 50% win chance is already an extremly generous assumption. Okay, now what is the probability of winning 283 of 320 games with a chance of .50. The binomial distribution tells us that it is 2*10^(-48). And this doesn't even account for the fact that all his remaining games were 2nd place which would farther decrease the probability of this happening.

How do you guys read discard ponds in the short amount of time tenhou gives you? I can read them kinda okay when playing the single player flash client since I got time, but tenhou moves really and I end up discarding at random sometimes.
Anybody got any tips to deal with this? Is there like a quick checklist to look for at a glance or something? The only time I can read hands somewhat reliably is when the opponent has his hand open.

I’ve found a strange thing when I checked the replays tab—when I play from my desktop I have four consecutive losses, while on my laptop I have four consecutive wins. I’ve just played on my laptop and felt like it would be another loss, cause it was like the previous times– my hands worth several han didn’t made it to agari or someone had riichi’d before I could. But I always went betaori continuing to swearing heavily and just with a couple of hands at the end (not even consecutive or while being oya) I managed to bump the kamicha from the first place. Feels good.
To all those who also had massive losses: the start of 2016 seems to be raising the plank on tile efficiency and betaori. You can win if you keep your seat maximum safe. Go for shit hands even if all you have is two-three dora and a simple yaku. If you have time, you can develop it a bit longer, but getting ready first is extremely important.

Yeah, no. Everything shown in that video is extremely annoying and disrespectful. Of course you can do whatever the fuck you want when playing with friends, but like every game mahjong also has rules of etiquette for people you don't know.
Also, some of them are not ironclad absolute no-nos either. For example if everything is going in a friendly atmosphere and the others are alright with it, there's no reason why you couldn't talk about what happened at X stage of the hand, or see the other players' hands. But if people don't care about it and want to keep the rythm going, you have to accept and move on, which is what will generally happen in jansou against people you've seen for the first time in your life. Also while literally slamming tiles is tolerated only in yakuza circles, playing them with slight force doesn't necessarily make people want to kill themselves; the JPML league has a pro that pretty much always does that, but never actual slamming.

How can you segue from "NEVER EVER BREAK THE WALL" to "Break the wall if you think someone's cheating." Why not just confront them outright.

I guess this might be explained the way it was done in Tetsuya, where confronting might mean nothing if you don't have proof. However, he overlooks an important thing which is that cheating at mahjong isn't something everyone and their dog can do, and that it would be a terrible breach if you broke the wall of that guy who has been on a winning streak yet was actually not cheating.
Most if not all cheating can be avoided by agreeing beforehand that any tiles that get overturned must be immediately put back down, that shuffling must be done carefully to maintain tiles face-down, and that players should pick tiles from the entire pool and not just in front of themselves. These are all pretty easy to do.

Couldn't put it better myself. The 3 videos he links to (the crazy guys at the table and the 2 anti-manners videos) are how an article like this should be written. They all use humor and are aimed at showing something to the audience instead of having this kind of paranoid and accusatory tone.
