Youkais are mostly spiritual being so physical attacks don't do much but attacking their spirit (or just throwing wizard shit at their general direction) completely wrecks them.
Seals, enchantments, rituals, all of them could be used to weaken a youkai till it's power match that of a human of the same size and build

Also you have some troubles with generalization. For example should humans in our world be afraid of animals in a forest? There could be bears, wolves, huge boars, any of them can easily kill a lone human. But for every wolf/bear there are hundreds of completely harmless birds, squirrels, foxes, beavers, rabbits, hedgehogs. So in a forest an average human is stronger than an "average" animal.
