I try not to write side characters to be any more than what's needed, otherwise I have a tendency to go off on tangents. Granted, most of my stories are 'one and done' rather than continuousapart from the two that I abandoned, so it was never that much of a problem for me.

It's just a retelling of A New Hope. There's no originality to it. It's New Hope filled with "It's 2015!" and CGI. Rey is a Mary Sue who is somehow insanely skilled with the force despite never receiving proper training.Han Solo, the worlds toughest and most clever smuggler dies a sucker's death to the oldest trick in the book, the villains are weak as fuck, one is a big brutish Palpatine while the other is a whiny edgy kid who fucks up, Finn is supposedly brainwashed his whole life to be a Stormtrooper yet after one mission is completely fine with bailing the dogma of what he has supposedly been brainwashed to follow. It's filled with nostalgia baiting and "wink wink remember THIS?". It has a lot of problems that people will gladly ignore because it has enough nostalgia fanservice and people are going to say "At least it was better than the Prequels!"
tldr: The whole product is completely safe corporate approved executive and shareholder signed off retelling of A New Hope made to be more progressive so they can sell Star Wars Merch for the next 10 years to nostalgia ridden fans.

Finn was originally a janitor who was eventually moved to active combat; but in his first mission at the start of the film, had a freak-out, apparently awoke to some Force-Sensitivity, and went AWOL.

Kylo isn't supposed to be as threatening or a full blown villian like Vader was in the first trilogy.
He's supposed to be full of angst because he doesn't believe he's up to the name of his grandfather and uncle and was tempted to the Dark side in hopes of becoming as strong as them, ironically betraying everything Luke and Anakin stood for.
Hekilled his fatherin hopes that it would make him stronger, but he realizes what a huge mistake he has committed after he does so, so he is between the good side and the bad side of the force right now, feeling him with even more angst.
The director mentioned he will become a even more threatening force in the next movies.
He might be an unlikable character for some, but he's very well written.
