I'm guessing, that you're implying the 1-pin imposes suji on the 4-pin. You're half correct. Unfortnately, you also need a 7-pin discarded to hide that 4-pin wait of yours.

Now, if you drop 4-pin to wait on 1 or 7. Then you have a nice suji trap right there.
>>
>>14515696
So the tile discarded needs to be in the middle of a suji interval?
>>
>>14515696
I was thinking that suji trap was the other way -- keeping the middle tile while having the outside tiles discarded.

The discarded middle tile masks the outside tiles.

And if you have the outside tiles discarded to wait on the middle one... then...

>>14515709
That's "naka suji", or middle suji. And it works that way too.

Under both cases, you're taking advantage of the furiten rule, where defending players may imply safe tiles along an interval (when it's actually not applicable).

Of course, don't do this with "open waits", where you'd actually end up in furiten.

I was already surprised they cut the nan at that point in the game. I'd be doubly surprised if they cut it into a riichi, although maybe they'd fall for the 5p suji before the round drew. And yeah, all I really wanted to do was escape 4th. It was already greedy to take apart the 9s pair and push for honitsu, I think.

Better than before, since they got rid of the biggest downside of european rules and finally allowed kuitan.
But in return they made quite some other stupid changes:

- No red fives
- No Kazoe Yakuman
- No abortive draws
- No Nagashi Mangan
- Renhou allowed but is mangan instead of yakuman
- Dai Suushi is no double yakuman anymore

Mostly yes, but some other things differ as well like renhou being allowed and different chombo rules.
>>
>>14521450
Even weirder shit happens in the West round, 'cause of the stakes. The amount of room to fuck up is severely decreased.
>>
>>14522760
Chombo never had a standard rule. Sure, there's the "reverse mangan" payment; but that's actually a nonsensical way to enforce it. It wastes time; and it gives players added benefit to someone's rule mistake. A -20 to uma post game is harsher and easier to implement.
>>
>>14522754
I for one really like tenhous rules. I played differently before, but I found that almost all of their rules make sense and add something of value to the game. The only excpetions are that I would like to have double yakuman, triple ron and Renhou allowed.

I just love it when someone calls kan, wastes 4 safe honor tiles they could've used, and immediately deals straight into a haneman or higher because of all the dora they added. On top of that they weren't even close to tenpai.
>>
>>14522794
If that kan was called to attempt rinshan, then it's somewhat acceptable.

If that kan was called with a nowhere-near-tenpai hand, then it's fucking retarded.
>>
>>14522822
Closed kans can be usefull defensively.
If there are 4 tiles left in the wall you can skip your last turn with it, and if all of your tiles look dangerous you can use it for a chance to draw a safer tile, though of course this also adds the risk of kan-dora, so it should only be used late in a round.

South 4, non-dealer, down by 14k. A direct ippatsu hit on the leader. The correct choice was to pass, but without good scoring sense, and slightly confused by even being able to ron at that point, I did not know. The two ura-dora plus fu made it a comeback hand anyway, so all's well that ends well.

Having dealt 1p is not very important unless you have also dealt 7p. And like some other anon said, there is literally no difference between 6, and 4p and only a very slight difference to 5p. The reason middle tiles are considered more dangerous is because you can built two ryanmen waits around them. You can't do this for 1-3 and 7-9 but you can for 4-6. They are all equally dangerous in terms of outs. 5 is slightly more dangerous because there are red fives, but it doesn't matter here since the 6 alone would be just as good of a wait as the 4 and the 5 just adds to this.
Also number of outs > discard reading almost every single time.

This was my first one, the black one though cause it goes well with my table.

I bought it years ago and it's still good. We split the price 4 ways so it's more manageable. If you have friends to play with (if you don't, why are you buying a mahjong set?).

Just things to note
>The tiles flip easily, kinda annoying when shuffling.
The solution is just not give a shit and flip the stragglers down later.

>The haku tiles are poorly done. There's no colored/lifted backs so they're the same on both sides.
You just kinda get used to it but we had a few awkward moments before (Also someone thought they were funny to kan with haku when someone already pon'd haku earlier and it took us a few seconds to register what just happened).

Aside from that it's great, just minor issues.

Man, I forgot how shitty this board is. That'll show me to have a dissenting opinion. Have fun with your circlejerk.
>>
>>14526987
Why are you being so defensive?
And to debate your point, 3P is inferior because mahjong was a game meant to be played with 4. 3P leads to more high value hands occuring more often, leading you to get buttfucked by a yakuman every so often and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not even fun because there's more skill involved than 4P, and that's saying something.

I play 3p sometimes, when I feel like throwing tiles around but don't want to take the game really seriously. It's kinda fun.

I had a nightmare I went below R1600 today. I should ease off the mahjong for a bit.

But there's not much difference between R1600 and R1500. You can gain it back by winning a few matches.

Only if you have few matches. Once you reach ~300 games your ELO changes very slowly. Since I've reached 400 games my ELO changes only by about 6 points on a win or loss and 2 on a 3rd or 4th place.

To me, all yakuman have personalities. Chin-rou-tou is the hipster yakuman. Daisangen is the mainstream yakuman. Shou/dai-Suu-Shii are the older, more mature brothers of daisangen. Kokushi musou is a desperate homeless man. Suu-An-Kou is a really cool, chill guy because there's no yelling involved with him. Chuu-ren is very serious and business like. Ryu-ii-Sou is tree-hugger.

>>
>>14531221
There is nothing distinguished about a hand that people go for late game because they have bad starting hands and they're behind by a lot. I will not relent on the fact that kokushi musou is usually a desperate attempt at a comeback that is the result of a trash starting hand. He can dream all he wants, but the reality is that he'll like never get anywhere.

Yaku also have their personalities.

Tanyao is the town bike who opens her hands for everyone. Yakuhai is her slightly less-used, but still promiscuous little sister.

Pinfu is a modest and simple girl who prioritizes on basics and fundamentals. Good friends with tsumo.

Riichi is a gambler who likes to talk big. Sometimes he hits multiple ura-dora, but sometimes ends up dealing into large hands.
>>
>>14531246
That means that Chanta is a girl that plays hard to get, but is also good friends with Yakuhai and will sometimes accompany her. Her older sister Jun-chan hates Yakuhai though.
>>
>>14531246

I used the good ole' trusty "what if" machine.

Had he called kan on the 1-man, suddenly your draws becomes his. And look where the 9-man are situated. Of course, that's barring any further tile order disruption. Sometimes, yakuman require doing fucked up things.

I wish I could get better at mahjong. (Kind of a repost, but I'm still frustrated)
Online mahjong is just so fast. Getting a feel for the tiles is impossible when the time that transpires between your turn and your next one is usually around 5 seconds.
I have now more than 300 games played, and I have made zero improvement in tile reading compared to the very first day I played.

I'm not expecting some Akagi-tier foresight, but shit, I don't think a normal japanese player who practiced irl with friends is supposed to be this clueless after months playing.

It feels less like I'm playing against other players, and more like I'm playing a one-player mahjong in which sometimes I will lose at complete random when the RNG wills it.
>>
>>14533438
You can always win before the other guys get their own winning tiles.
As long as you have some points, a bullshit haneman will get you a good spot.
>>
>>14533456
That's still one-player mahjong, like I'm saying in the last phrase.

Of course I'm going to aim for fast hands or heavier ones when I'm low on points, but still it doesn't help me in any way in playing while I have no idea what everybody else is doing.
>>
>>14533463
Post a replay, I don't know what you mean by "one-player mahjong" when what everyone else does should have at least some effect on what you do. You're making it sound like you never even look at other people's discards unless they call riichi.
>>
>>14533438
I feel the same. I get especially confused when someone stays damaten and I end up dealing in. How am I supposed to know when they're in tenpai? How do I even guess what they're waiting on? It all feels so random to me.

>You're making it sound like you never even look at other people's discards unless they call riichi.

That's almost exactly it. There's simply no time to look at them, and even when looking when someone isn't in riichi I can't make any sense of what the discards are supposed to signify. This post >>14533559 also kind of feels like what I mean. Unless someone calls riichi it feels like the other players' discards have no meaning outside of "I guess that tile's not in play anymore, uh."
>>
>>14533592
>There's simply no time to look at them
What? Do you play speed mahjong?
>>
>>14533790
Even with 15 seconds of time at their disposal, the majority of players will take their move instantly.

And then you can't take your sweet time every turn because it drains your seconds 'bank'.
>>
>>14533794
I always decide my next discard while the other players take their turns (along with a couple of backups in case the situation changes)
>>
>>14533794
What do you need more time for? If no one opens their hand you just play solo, if someone riichis THEN you look at their pond, if someone opens their hand you THEN look at their pond because you know they are confident on getting a yaku and start guessing. I do that and win just fine.
>>
>>14533813
>If no one opens their hand you just play solo
Isn't it important to check for tiles you may choose to wait on in other players discards so that you know you aren't putting yourself into an impossible/near impossible wait?
>>
>>14533794
>>14533592
After one or two turns, you should know the basics of what could get you closer to tenpai or give you more uke-ire, so what do you do then? If you don't know the basics of your hand after 20 second, it's a problem of how fast you process information, because it shouldn't be difficult.

Personally, after the first few turns, I look at the discards more than I look at my hand because I already know the basic ways the hand can progress. I don't know if it goes that way for everyone though.

Damaten is always gonna be a bitch. There's no helping that. I watched an advertised high ranking game earlier today and saw a 9 dan deal into a damaten mangan value pinfu/tan yao/dora hand. Unless it's looks like a fucking obvious hon/chin istu, or a suspicious chanta, there isn't any reasonably sure method. Open hands are easier though.
