> What is kigurumi?

Kigurumi (着ぐるみ) is a kind of costuming where the player wears a full body skin suit (called hadatai) along with an anime mask. The Japanese word "kigurumi" refers to any kind of full-body costume, but in this thread we're specifically looking for anime masks combined with skin-toned bodysuits - properly known as "animegao" kigurumi.

> Where can I find kigurumi pictures/videos?

http://www.animegao.com/ combines many kigurumi blogs and sites into a single feed. On pixiv, the 着ぐるみ and 着ぐる絵 tags contain many relevant images. Many Japanese kigurumi players now use Twitter. http://pastebin.com/nYuh4aat contains a random assortment of links.

Kigurumi players often stream videos on http://www.ustream.tv. You can find them by searching for "kigurumi" or "着ぐるみ". http://www.mediafire.com/?xtqkc2yn75u54 and http://yellingtoilet.com/search/?q=kigurumi have many kigurumi fetish videos. Don't beg.

> Where can I buy kigurumi masks?

http://kigup.com/page/WhereToBuyKigurumiSuits
(possibly outdated/incomplete)

A reasonable mask and bodysuit will cost roughly 1000-2000 USD depending on quality.

> Drama?

No. Kigurumi girls have to be cute and friendly, not just in appearance, but in heart as well!
That means there is no porn.

> Isn't it usually dudes who wear these?

Yes.

Would you accept a warm hug from a cute kig?
>>
>>14507542
Yes, even warm fellatio.
>>
>>14507542

Not even a heatwave could stop me wanting that hug.
>>
I remember reading recently about a fursuit maker in Japan that used recycled iphones in the suit head to created animated blinking eyes. I can't help but wonder if something like that would work for a kig mask.
>>
>>14508386
This could be adapted with bigger screens and anime graphics I'm sure https://learn.adafruit.com/animated-electronic-eyes-using-teensy-3-1/customizing
I've seen it used on a dragon fursuit head and the effect was really neat.
I've been researching maybe taking it a step further and rigging up eye tracking gear to control it...
>>
>>14508733
I know there's a program that can connect muscle sensors to be used to control motors and other devices. It's the same as how myoelectric prosthetics are controlled, but made far more compact and customizable. I figured something like this could be applied to control various animatronic or electronic effects in masks or costumes.

Honestly, I think your best bet with the tight space in a mask would probably be a joystick you control with your mouth. Maybe a button either side for winking/blinking.

Getting proper eye tracking is going to be near impossible in that tiny space, surely.

I know she's pretty hated here but I really think Wyu was onto something with the winking/blinking mask and it really help make kigurumi videos a little less weird.

You're not thinking forward enough. Myoelectric sensors are more compact and less slobbery.

While these are all interesting ideas. I have to ask what it is that you don't like about animegao masks as they are now?

The static faces are already endearing, and give the impression of a living figurine. I like that the masks are static, and I don't think that moving eyes or faces would add anything to the appeal of the characters.

Not saying that we shouldn't look at new ways of creating masks, or portraying characters, but I don't think seeking realism is what makes this hobby great.

Fursuiters (as you have mentioned) seek realism because they want to be the characters they designed. I just want to be a 1:1 scale anime doll. I don't need or want moving eyes to do that.

Sorry for the hot fresh opinions.
>>
>>14510919
As someone who owns a kig, I prefer having blank static eyes. I don't find kigurumi at all creepy, but realistic blinking eyes makes it go from cute to uncanny valley for me.

Also it seems complicated and annoying.
>>
>>14510919

It's not that I dislike anything about current kigurumi masks, it's just that blinking really helps bring them to life for me. Makes them feel less like a figurine and more like an actual anime character come to life.

>>14510619

That's really cool, definitely better than a joystick.

I didn't like the thought of the bodysuit either since I love the feel of dresses and skirts on my legs but it really makes things a lot easier and look a lot better.

>>14513508
It gets sweaty and gross and itchy and dirty and holey and I hate it. If you got skin that matches the character and you're able to look good without hadatai, ditch it.
>>
>>14515489
I don't think you wash yours enough or not properly. From photos you posted it looked really gross in the hand and feet areas.

I wash mine after every session or two and don't have that issue. I use ayame suits. I replace it once a year.

How long does the ordering process take? I'm still waiting to pay for an order from Ayame, and it's been longer than a month already.
>>
>>14517658
The hadatai I order has been in stock every time I have ordered so I get it in a week usually.

I'm not sure how long it takes if it needs to be made still, I imagine it depends on how busy they they are.
>>
>>14518219
I ordered the #1 from them, which I imagine is their most stocked colour. I was also under the impression that I had to pay them before the hadatai itself had to be made.

Ayame still produces the best quality hadatai nowadays, doesn't it? I'm still far away from getting a mask and all the accessories I need, so I suppose I can wait.
>>
>>14518219
If not in stock... may take 2 weeks or so.
2 months for any sorts of custom order

There are some that seek to become a big moving figurine doll, and others who seek to become animu grills. I'd say both of these are fine, but experimentation and progress is the way forward in most fields so I'm with those who isn't afraid to dabble in the uncanny valley for the sake of achieving 2.5D realism.

Masks with subtle expressions look really good when static, but more energetic expressions like those with an open mouth seem kind of strange when the rest of the body is moving. It works great in pictures, but the expression can quickly start to look out of place in video or real life. I think opening and closing the eyes and mouth would be very cool. I don't think they should fully change expression or become like real life, but being able to show more and less excitement would be very very cool.

How difficult it is to obtain a good quality costume which is not commonly found nowadays?
Kamituro was the first I saw kigging and he captivated me ever since, especially his Saki cosplay. Now this anime is more than a decade old now and barely any shops have even the option to search for its costumes.

My question is: is it possible to commission something like this from a costume maker in hopes of being top notch ( money is not a concern obviously )? And if yes is there any western costume maker who you think could handle it/trustworthy?
>>
>>14536528
Well if kamituro is an inspiration than you like latex. Go andromeda latex gonna cost you a few $k but you will have the ultimate costumes and all will be envious and/or drooling at you.

That shit gets expensive. I figure the trick is to have at least two: One that goes out and gets fucked up, and one that stays indoors and is kept pristine.

Obviously I am not a stellar example of this, but I'm working on it.
>>
>>14536528
This is yet another struggle for kigs outside of Japan. Cosplay shops in the US are complete ass.
