What are some different examples of "otaku" do you know of, as in the varieties of interests that create the umbrella of otaku culture?

Well I've thought of "otaku culture" as revolving around anime, manga, games, light novels, doujin, figures, cosplay and things like that. All things 2D. Which isn't to say that otaku can be only interested in those things.
Then you've got people who are otaku for things like trains and the military, but their interests aren't part of "otaku culture." So they'd be called train otaku or military otaku and not otaku, period.
When otaku is extended to things like sports, cooking and fashion, the label starts to become meaningless and seems like the same sort of stuff that's happened to "geeks" in the West. Now you're a "geek" if you've played something more complicated than a mobile game and have seen a scifi movie.

I'm subscribed to a number of math sites where the goal is simply to solve math problems, equations, or puzzles. There are communities revolved around it, that sounds like a bunch of otakus to me.
