>No one ever said that everyone on this board was speaking/learning Japanese.

And if you want to be motivated to speak the language, interest yourself in history, actual culture, traditions, mythology, religion, arts, etc... of the country.
Do NOT try to learn the language just because you like manga, animes, games, japanese pop culture, commercial medias, etc...
These are the worst reasons ever, you'll be despised by everyone —japanese people included— and you'll eventually give up because it's not a strong enough reason to go through that hard work.

You'll really get motivated if you know japanese people or have a reason to talk with them, communicate and discover things.
If you're just a weaboo neet browsing memes on the web, watching animes and playing games, you shouldn't try to learn this language.

So, tell us, why do you want to learn Japanese?
>>
If the prospect of learning Japanese itself doesn't motivate you, which it shouldn't, you need to have some sort of end goal in mind; probably something you would like to experience in the full glory of the original language.

Or you can just try to get by without any motivation, either because you're really good at sucking it up (and if you were you wouldn't be here), or find some sort of way to make learning fun.

>>14485564
>If you're just a weaboo neet browsing memes on the web, watching animes and playing games, you shouldn't try to learn this language.
If you're a weeaboo NEET browsing memes on the internet you have nothing better to do with your time.

I agree to an extent. I only learned Japanese to the extent where I could crack open a dictionary and translate most things. However, some people are inspired by that alone.

On the other hand, I learned Mandarin for the reasons above, and I can at least hold somewhat interesting discussions in the language. However, I speak a weird mix of Taipei dialect and erhua.

As a side note, I guess the nice thing about ancient Chinese history is, despite the purges, how well documented it is. The Dark Ages are a misnomer for the people, but secondary historical sources past Procopius are fucking scant. Not the same with Chinese history, or at least that which is translated (though anything involving the court is more circlejerky than any monarch's historian). Japanese history (and Korean, albeit purges) is the same once the tradition starts, but that is mostly after 1000 AD.
>>
>>14485564
One reason I almost considered learning it was because of the massive amount of anime I watch. Not for the sake of being a weaboo, but since I listened to japanese more than english on some days, I thought it might be easier to learn, and get something out of it

semi-related: Should I take the Japanese class at my uni?

>It's a prerequisite to doing a study abroad in Japan so if I want to study abroad there I would have to
In this case, do it.
keep in mind that the class won't prepare you too well, so do a fuckton of self-study
>>
>>14489562
Do it. Even if you don't do the study abroad or decide to give up temporarily, the class will give you a stable base which will teach you how to teach yourself.
>>
>>14489562
>It's a prerequisite to doing a study abroad in Japan so if I want to study abroad there I would have to
There's really no way to prove your skill otherwise?

Having to go over incredibly basic stuff for a few hours a week will get old very fast. You can accomplish in a week what most courses offer in a year.

>>14489602
Classroom language study is close to worthless. The only value it has is at an intermediate level to clear up misconceptions about grammar points or word usage, and even then you can just talk to one of the thousands of nips who would love to suck your dick over Skype.

>This course is designed to develop basic speaking skills and to introduce hiragana, katakana, and approximately 300 kanji. Emphasis is on both spoken and written Japanese. This course is the equivalent of Japanese 1A-1B offered in the regular academic year.

this is the description, is this stuff I can easily learn myself? the main problem is i dont think I will have the mental fortitude to learn anything if I am not being forced to
>>
>>14489946
>mental fortitude to learn anything if I am not being forced to
No matter how many classes you take, you will have to do a lot of self-studying. When I say that, I mean you will have to study things not in your class's curriculum. There is just no way for college courses to cover absolutely everything about the language.

The class will give you a nice push into the right direction and will teach you the right and easy way to study, but it ultimately rests on you to become fluent.

Source: 6 semesters of Japanese language classes. I can speak somewhat fluent if the sentences are basic.
>>
>>14489946
300 kanji can easily be learned in the span of 2 weeks. Kana take a day.

I really fucking hope that class only lasts for a single semester or something, if that's a year and they've got you in 5 days a week, something has gone horribly wrong.
>>
>>14490060
It's a 10 week class...I thought the same thing, I mean thats a solid 200 hours of classtime and it doesnt seem to aim to teach that much...

Hopefully studying abroad will develop my japanese ability much more
>>
>>14490060
> 300 kanji can easily be learned in the span of 2 weeks.
Please, tell me that easy way of yours.

Im learning kanji, in the form of vocabulary. For example basic kanji 田 - I will learn meaning, readings た、デン and then I will learn words, which contain this kanji, like 水田、油田、田舎 etc. with this method, I will learn kanji, its readings, meaning and few more words which contain it, and I will also practice few other kanji which I still dont know.
But im dissatisfied with this method, cause its slow.
>>
>>14490129
Stop learning useless words until you know all the common ones. I don't think I've ever heard the words 水田 or 油田 spoken aloud before...
>>
>>14490366
These are first words in our kanji learning book which was published in our country. Its used for study in our schools. But I also never heard them in any anime or vn.
>>
>>14490389
That seems pretty ridiculous.
>>
>>14490399
Obviously the words they're learning are made of the easiest kanji in the world put together. It's not like "water field" and "oil field" require actual memorization because they are literally made of their parts.

But its true, this is picture from that book, not in english though.
>>
>>14490419
I still think it's silly. It would make more sense to teach words in order of how common they are rather than how the kanji that comprise them are ordered on an arbitrary list.
>>
>>14490431
I like the radical school of teaching (kanji get infinitely easier when you know what's in them) but there's a lot of ways to go about learning the same thing. 駅 is used a lot more than 馬 but we all know which one people are going to learn first.

>>
>>14488822

>>
>>14490129
>>14490903
I used a modified form of KanjiDamage, because I've found it the most useful for presenting common readings in a succinct manner. You do have to cut out some of the garbage and take it with a grain of salt, though. It's really not that hard to add on kunyomi mnemonics and fix some of the stupider radicals.

A reasonable proportion of words are just "say what you see", like those stupid water and oil field ones. You only have to actually learn the ones that are exceptions, which means for an initial investment time of X kanji, you're already able to understand X*~3 words.

At a pace of 20 kanji a day, it took me around 45 minutes to do my reps daily.
>>
>>14491231
Ah I see, so by learning ~7 you're effectively getting 20 a day down. That makes much more sense.

That actually sounds like a pretty good system, thanks. Sounds like some form of that is worth adding into my studies.

>>
>>14485564

Japanese history? You mean feudalism that went on for half a millennium before feudalism ended in the rest of the world?

Japanese culture? You mean regressive, traditionalist, collectivist, mysoginistic(yes, I'm actually using that word) dogma that idolizes hypocrisy in all aspects of life?

Japanese traditions? What am I, a fucking cave man?

Japanese art? You mean like anime/manga, games, media? Surely you're not referring to the hilarious medieval art that is only novel because of how bad it is compared to the rest of the world's art during the same period?

Listen here, you Hitlerjugend ass nationalist motherfucker, Japan is a SHITHOLE country, with SHITHEEL people that, despite of its wealth and technology, is one of the most regressive and anti-secular nations in the world, like much of Asia. There is NOTHING to respect them for, other than the resounding success of their entertainment industry. Learning Japanese for the Japanese is the WORST thing you can learn Japanese for.

I just can't get past kanji/vocabulary

Like, I have this kanjidamage deck. I start it and the first thing that pops up is "ONE (ichi)". I think to myself "okay, that's easy. I know that kanji. So I guess that's good?" I click show the answer, and then on "easy"
Next comes up WOMAN (onna). "Okay, obviously I know this one too. I mean if I had to draw it propably I'd do it wrong, but I know it when I see it. Does that mean I "know" it?" I click show answer and it shows me the kanji and a few words. I think "should I memorize all those words? Or at least the common ones, right? So do I know this kanji if I can only read shoujo? Or do I have to memorize some more? And how do I do that, the sounds mean nothing to me. I know what shoujo is because of my cartoons, but the other words are just noise. Should I just stare at them for 20 seconds and then say "ok, all good, probably gonna forget it in the next 2 minutes"? Should I just ignore it and concentrate on just guessing the kanji from the main english word?

I'm stupid

Im writing them all on the paper. If they popup again, im writing them again for practice, with their readings, and meanings.
When I finally remember them and can say what they means and how to read them, i will write only kanji for practice, and thats it.

And yes, im not remembering only kanji alone, but also words where they are contained.
For 女 i will learn 少女 (しょう・じょ)、女房 (にょう・ぼう)、女性 (じょ・せい)、女神 (め・がみ) and more. As you can see, different readings of 女 are used in these words (and basic おんな reading isnt there) so you will need to remember them eventually, to know how to read a word and by that, decide what it means.

This method is pretty slow though. But im now in this track, and until I decide to learn them in other way, I will continue like this. Maybe I will then switch to KanjiDamage.

Im also trying to learn every day...
Sorry for bad photo.

>>14499311
It's pretty dumb to just learn each kanji as a list of words it contains.

Let's use 女 as an example. What you should be learning, at most, is the common kunyomi, and 1-2 onyomi. In the case of 女, じょ is by far the most prevalent, and should be the only one you waste any time linking mentally during early study. You've got 女性, 少女, 女王, 彼女, 女優, 女子, 王女, 長女, 女史, 女装, and those are just the extremely common words that all use the じょ reading.

Meanwhile, there are only 2 archaic readings in the common list, with 女房 and 女神. It makes far more sense to just learn those words separately as exceptions to the rule.

The basic おんな reading is how you say the kanji on its own. All of the other words are compounds known as jukugo.

Your method will take you an extreme amount of time when it really isn't necessary.
>>

Like they pretend to learn it, but their language skill is at best as good as some non-English-speaking country elementary schooler's English.

Whoah there friend. The kind of work most of them do is relatively modern as well, so you shouldn't talk about that either. Japs only talk about classical literature, history and mythology.

I'm on Episode 17 out of 234 of the Yuru Yuri radio show and I'm having a lot of fun but I feel like I might get tired of it within the next hundred episodes.

It feels kind of weird knowing that all the upcoming events they're so excited about all wrapped up years ago.
>>
>>14518619
Yeah, I feel the same with the older shows I listen to.
The more modern ones just depress me because I know I won't be able to go to the events they keep announcing thanks to being invested in my studies.

I know right... I just wanna learn Japanese for the sake of learning it since I kind of feel attracted to Eastern Asian Language but I'm really getting discouraged by the amount of kanjis there is to learn...
I can learn a 50 characters alphabet quickly, but learning at least 2k characters that are complicated as fuck with up to 5 pronunciations each might be a bit too much...

>>14493765
You'll get them really quickly using this website:
http://realkana.com/

I learned them about 6 months ago but never used it, I still remember most of them though.
>>
damn /jp/
thanks for these resources for learning this shit

hard to learn japanese when you are preoccupied with suppressing thoughts of killing yourself
>>
>>14510994
They all want to get married and keep you to themselves when they hit their 20s
>>
Don't worry, I only get super motivated in spurts of about 6 months then I burn out and forget everything.
>>
Start with this:
http://www.memrise.com/course/12/introduction-to-japanese/
Then do this:
http://www.memrise.com/course/80119/learn-basic-japanese/
If you don't want to kill yourself you should move to more in-depth grammar and download this:
https://thepiratebay(.)gd/torrent/9144758/Genki_I__amp__II_-_An_Integrated_Course_in_Elementary_Japanese_[
and combine it with this:
http://www.memrise.com/course/450161/genki-i-grammar/
And use this cheat sheet for quick reference. http://docdro.id/lq0cDa6

For Kanji use these:
http://www.memrise.com/course/114948/japanese-kanji-radicals-6/
http://www.memrise.com/course/924654/1144/
http://www.memrise.com/course/141583/2136-joyo-kanji-by-grade/

Bonus:
download the Obenkyo app for your phone.
>>
Plan on going to comiket once you're fluent. Works for me.
>>
>>14519901
I'd throw in Tae Kim's guide ( http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/ ) It's not perfect, but it gives you a head start. And it explains things better than Genki for the most of it.
>>
>>14519926
obenkyo is tae kim's app. it has all his lessons on it. it's fucking great.
>>
>>14519929
Really? Well, now I feel like a jackass reading the pdf in my phone.
>>
>>14519945
i didn't know about either for the longest time. it really should be more visible on his site.
>>
huh? why am I even learning Japanese anymore? I don't know. I guess i'm just trying to convince myself I'm doing something useful and my life is heading somewhere
>>

are you me?

I should have done this one fucking ages ago.
>>
>>14485518
>motivated as I am
So, barely? Why would you want that?

>>14517965
because it's important for business purposes (particularly where I live, down in FL)

>>14493765
Hiragana is pretty easy if you just spend like a week and really, really go at it. It's honestly pretty easy, but you need to just go at it and put a few hours in every day.
same thing with katakana, but it took me a few months because I was a lazy ass (and I still can't remember how to write most of them)

>>14519968
Hello, other me.
>>
>>14519968
>huh? why am I even learning Japanese anymore?
Are you retarded? Wise sages like you who can translate hentais for us will always be valued in our society (4chan's that is).
>>
>>14519901
Also just wanted to add on to this

For memrise make sure to get the Stylish extension and then the japenese font here: http://userstyles.org/styles/111939

the default font on memrise is shit for learning jap. you can also get a dark them for memrise here: https://userstyles.org/styles/103865/dark-memrise-g2

>not learning english to shitpost on /jp/
>>
>>14522673
The point is you can't avoid learning English in 90% of countries in the world.
>>
If you plan on being anywhere near fluent in Japanese be prepared to have no life and waste 50% of your free time studying
>>
>>14524560
Nah
>>
>>14524566
Yes, you won`t get anywhere with the language by only spending 30 mins a day. This is not including reading and watching j stuff.
>>
>>14485518

You can't.

There are autists here who spend 8 hours a day studying with ease.

I can barely make it through my 200+/day anki cards in 10~15 mins without wanting to die.

>>
Well /jp/, I did it. I finally did it. I signed up for my uni's intro to Japanese course. Let's see how this works out.

I started going to this Japanese voice trainer who says he'll make me sound like a native

Hope this works
>>
>>14532066
>Japanese voice trainer
You what
>>
>>14485564
>you'll be despised by everyone —japanese people included—
Well this is just plain wrong, when I tell people I learned Japanese for/through games they generally respond by saying that maybe they should play games in English to get better at it.

Of course I doubt you've ever talked to a Japanese person so you wouldn't know.
>>
>>14532066
>murrilard problems

>>14532075
It's a place for foreigners and kikokushijo wanting to sound more Japanese and Japanese people who want to sound better (eg. to get rid of their dialect, speak more clearly, to become seiyuu, presenters, etc.)

How good is that memrise site?

I've been using Duolingo to learn German language and KhanAcademy to relearn pre-uni Math. I see they have a lot of stuff, but is it comparable in quality to these sites?
>>
>>14536185
man, the word 'Duolingo' triggers me so hard

it reminds me of my bachelor's thesis where I tried to design a superior web language learning application to Duolingo...
>>
>>14532095
I try not to talk to people of any race.
>>
>>14519901
absolutely none of the slides are working for me. Is this site broken or something?
>>
>>14534939
>become seiyuu
Are there a lot of foreign seiyuu? All I can think of are Bernard Ackah being in Yugioh and that Russian woman being in Evangelion.
>>
Hey senpaitachi
I'm planning to sit next jlpt for N3 level but I barely know some kanjis in N4

I talked with this guy who went to uni at japan and he told me not to learn in individual kanjis and learn in sentence.

Any site to help me with this? I've figured out the lists of vocab but I'd like to learn in words/ sentence. Do i just have to buy a exercise book or something?
>>
people are still shilling for the flashcard meme

lovely
>>
>>14545391

It is literally not possible to learn the Japanese language without the use of flashcards.
>>
>>14543778

http://tangorin.com/examples

I still learn them as words, rather than sentences, but I look up example sentences to get the definition right.
>>
Spending two weeks in Japan while speaking little Japanese was what really motivated me. I met tons of people I wanted to talk to but couldn't. Especially clerks/owners of specialty shops like ones that specialize in old animation cels or idol merchandise from the 70s/80s, they seem like they would have a lot of interesting things to say. So that has been my motivation.

>>14528707
Genki is a good book, but any university language class using it is going to move very slow. I suggest you go ahead on your own if you really want to learn. The classroom is a good place to start learning production, and then hating yourself when your korean classmate speaks perfectly and you sound like a chink speaking english.
>>
>>14495717
Go back to Korea

>Japanese culture? You mean regressive, traditionalist, collectivist, mysoginistic(yes, I'm actually using that word) dogma that idolizes hypocrisy in all aspects of life?

Let me tell you about hierarchy...
