If you want it in simple terms, think about this; why is incest bad? Because a child born from it has a more limited gene pool than a child born from unrelated parents. All incest related problems arise from that. Same concept applies to larger populations. The scale and some of the specifics are different, and it's a lot more subtle, but it's ultimately the same thing.
