It felt more "oldschool"(like the older games) than all of the newer games.

DDC has a dubious honor of having the worst and most forgettable cast out of Windows era main games. For a Touhou game that's a death sentence, even if it had been perfect from every other standpoint (it isn't).

Wakasagi-Sekibanki-Kagerou trio are all above average popular, with lots of fanart and doujinshi released.
And the Seija-Sukuna duo? Massively popular.
Not to mention Seija got her own game and Shinmyoumaru appeared in ULiL and makes frequent appearances in FS manga, which boosted their popularity even further.
The only DDC characters whom no one cares about are Raiko and the two sisters, Benben and the other one.
LoLK on the other hand? Clownpiece is the only character with high enough popularity.

Junko seems to be gaining popularity, and atleast Reisen was playable. It wasnt all bad.

Judging by amount of art on pixiv/twitter she's already the least popular stage 6 boss in Touhou history. The 2nd most popular LoLK character is Sagume. And that makes sense considering she is cuter, has better design, better ability, better personality, better everything.

It's probably just me and my preferences but after a bit of thought I would probably rank the windows games in cast identifiability in this highly subjective manner:
EoSD > PCB > IN > MoF = SA > PoFV > TD = DDC > UFO > LoLK
I'm not satisfied with the list and I hate the ties but this is reasonable in my head.
For TD I only think Miko and Futo stand out on their own, while UFO really only boasts Byakuren and Kogasa for me. Seemed even at two until I thought about how forgettable Murasa and Shou are and how often the other TD characters show up alongside Futo and the crown prince.

UFO > DDC ≥ TD
UFO is much more popular than you think.
You have Nazrin who's the second most popular stage 1 boss, right after Rumia.
Though some might argue Wriggle is just as popular.
Kogasa who, surprisingly, is very popular as well, gets a high number of fanart, doujinshi and music videos,

Then there's Ichirin, who despite being pushed heavily in the recent fighting games is not popular at all.
Murasa shares pretty much the same fate, with minimal popularity.
Shou isn't really all that popular and might be the least popular stage 5 boss in Touhou, most of her appearances in doujinshi and fanart are only becase she's frequently paired up with Byakuren and Nazrin.
Byakuren is massively popular, almost Yuyuko/Yukari tier. With tons of fan material both H and Non-H.
And then there's Nue, who's decently popular but a lot of it has to do with the porn.

Interesting. I agree with your points but still place it below DDC in spite of those points. I feel like Nazrin is the best embodiment of UFO while Byakuren feels like the static fixture of the game. Kogasa's popularity doesn't surprise me, though she feels almost out of place despite it being her debut. She is memorable on her own without tying her to a game unlike most other memorable characters. This is why I have difficulty using her to add weight to the game.

It objectively shows how popular individual characters are for sure, but less liked characters are not necessarily forgettable. I like Parsee best and she has ranked decently in popularity but I wouldn't consider her to be as memorable or iconic of a character as Kaenbyou Rin, who is apparently less popular.
