Dupes actually represent spare equipment for each ship. Let's say you have shit taste and a level 150 <Kongou>. Now you get another <Kongou> - there's actually one <Kongou> in your fleet, but two sets of equipment for her:
1x Modernized K-150 Kai 2 Combat Equipment,
1x Basic K-1 Training Equipment.
If you sortie your "level 1" <Kongou>, she uses K-1. If it's "level 150" <Kongou>, she equips K-150 Kai 2. If you "sink" your <Kongou>, the hag returns to your base. Beaten up and tired, but alive. The equipment she used, however, is utterly destroyed and cannot be repaired. It just "disappears".
Conclusion: Your shipgirls die only when you sink her last "copy". Following GETs are nothing but advanced androids who replace certain shipgirl.At least that's what I came up with to satisfy my massive autism.
