My question is how do you guys prepare for an event? Like constructing fleets and such. How do you know what fleet composition to use for the different stages?

We usually copy Nip setups and tweak them depending on our fleets. When map is for light fleet, most of people just go with default 1-2CL 4-5 DD. In combined fleet we already know the exact fleets we want to run because they have quite specific requirments and make some changes depending on branching rules (for exapmle in last E7 it was better to mix CV and CVL for higher chance to reach the boss).

HQ level doesn't mean jack shit anymore. People who go to boss nodes more have their raise much faster than those who rarely sortie but do PVP ever day. Especially if you're hunting for drops from boss nodes your HQ level will rise fast. The difficulty rise isn't a big deal since it only affects the easier maps. Spam sparkled expedition 8 (needs 6 ships), or unsparkled expedition 20. Try not to spam both unless you already have a shit ton of resources and buckets.

It isn't the same at all. On 5-1 you always go back after first node. There's zero risk of advancing with taiha.
I started doing 1-5-A using the fodder from my sparkling as meatshields for the bitchsub. It's slow, can't have other ships leech exp and can't even sustain itself because it doesn't consistently drop new meatshields but it's so easy I can't stop until I run out of fodder for the day. I miss when 1-5 was free.
