I like Meiling but she's really weak compared to all the other 2hus, at least Youmu can keep up with the others and was even a playable character in a main game.
Who guards when Meilings not? Is that all she does? Sounds pretty boring how can it even be fulfilling. Why doesnt she just walk away from this? She's not obligated like Sakuya or gets a whole library like Patch.

She's a chinese dragon youkai. Perhaps since she's almost ageless anyway, she's acting as a gate guard only to make sure humans don't wander in where they could be prepared for dinner by Sakuya.
She'd also lose the ability to monitor what the SDM is up to if she left, dangerous if the vampire incident restarted and the spell card rules were kicked to the side.

Nice find. I always saw her as actually being a very ancient youkai. Her appearance might emulate said red haired people who lived in China during the BC years.
I also love the idea that she's a dragon youkai. Those seem to be amongst the most powerful type of youkai that exist. Gensokyo's most popular deity is a dragon living high up in the sky. That dragon is said to have had a hand in creating Gensokyo's barriers seperating it from the rest of the world (Yukari didn't create them by herself, she said at one point).
So I assume dragon youkai have barrier powers. If Meiling's a dragon youkai, she might've been the one who transported the SDM into Gensokyo. It doesn't seem like something Remilia, Patchouli or even Sakuya are capable of doing despite their crazy powers. Which leaves the mysterious Meiling.
>>14384441
>red haired people who lived in China during the BC years.
It's a bit of a shallow analysis because the Tarim basin wasn't part of China at the time. Those people were complete foreigners - they were white and spoke an Indo-European language. Their disappearance was no thanks to the Chinese either, for rather they suffered on hands of the Xiongnu, and later were displaced by the Uyghurs. Modern Uyghurs are still mixed Caucasian and Asian.
>>14384441
>I also love the idea that she's a dragon youkai. Those seem to be amongst the most powerful type of youkai that exist.
I don't know why people can't accept that their waifu is fairly low on the food chain. If you liked her for who she is you wouldn't bother inventing this ridiculous overembroidered backstory as to why she's really the biggest baddest 2hu ever.

I really like the idea of a youkai that is suppose to be one of the greatest and strongest of her kind, turning out to be one of the mid-tier players and also one of the most amicable in the series. I think it adds a lot of charm to her character. Also, I would love it it turned out to be true, and Kasen found out the legendary beast she had been looking for was this girl that sleeps most of the day and gets bossed around by a loli vampire.

She gets to bunk in the scarlet mansion and eat their food, that would probably be her only payment. She probably doesn't need actual money anyway, I'd imagine there are certain maids in the mansion that does the shopping
>>14494130
She works for free
>>14494154
Thats the same for all maids in the SDM.
Whoch relaly makes me wonder.
How does Remilia afford all the food and clothing materials for herself and all her employees?
Unless Gensokyo has a stock market and she maniupulates Fate to always give her insane amounts of moeny, I jsut cant see her affording them all for the hundreds of years they have worked for her.
Not gonna lie, I would work at the SDM on a few conditions. Mainyl I get to spar with Meiling for an hour a day as exercise, and secondly I want Sakuya to use her time powers to keep me young.
It sounds like a fair trade, you gain experience, get fit, and dont lose time. She gets another servant who isnt useless like the fairies.
>>14494238
I would work there if I could have sex with Sakuya, Meirin or Patchy every day.
>>14495820
They wouldnt agree to that, and would probably not even hire you thinking you would be a threat to the maids. Remi is all about appearence so they couldnt have a lecherours, scandalous, base person like yourself.
The job is reward enough for the gatekeeper!
>>14305896
So why would Remilia have the weakest non-fairy under her employment work as the Gate Guard?
Wouldn't Sakuya make more sense as a guard? She's way stronger.
>>14504444
Guard keeps most humans out, and most youkai dont care or are also kept out.
Sakuya's powers make her better suited for a miad than Hong.
Also, she likes to watch Hong spar with people.
>>14504444
I don't think that Remilia expects her guard to repel the two people that stormed into her mansion and defeated not just her, but everyone else in it. Meiling is posted there to keep out intruders like Cirno that are more of a bother than a threat.

I see a lot of works where Meiling has a sort of motherly relation with Flan. This is unconfirmed, right? Do they even see each other often enough?
>>14513281
It's because Sakuya dotes on Remi, they think Hong is like that with Flan.
I like to think thats why Patchy summoned Koakuma, rather than leave her library she summoned a demon to keep Flan company.
Personally, I think Remilia and Sakuya should rip out Kaguya/Eirin/Mokou's liver and feed it to a human, then the immortal human is locked in a room with Flan. Flan gets un abreakable toy/friend, and will be a better person because of it.
>>14513281
considering how Flandre is locked up, and how Meirin guards all time, nonconfirmedlikely
Qi is apparently important in Taoism, and manipulation of it is in her power.
Why didnt she show up in TD?
Also, could she keep you young and immortal forever? Or can only Sakuya do that for humans?

>>14384647
>I don't know why people can't accept that their waifu is fairly low on the food chain
The thing is that there's enough evidence either way to support both sides. Its entirely plausible she is a dragon, and equally as much that she isn't.
While it isn't outright stated that she's a dragon, trying to forcibly say she's that low on the food chain sort of just says "Fuck you" to most of her theming.
>>14520349
>enough evidence
Look guy, Meiling is a gatekeeper for someone else
She's not a self employed, most-ancient-youkai-dragon, but a gatekeeper. And if I recall correctly, canon sources tell us that she's pretty incompetent in that job, prefer to read comics, nap while on duty.
When one looks at the huge disparity in power levels in Gensokyo, Meiling's can appropriately be called a small fry; she's a 3rd stage boss; not yet still a warm up for dodge, but the final threshold before things start to get hard. IMO, her story fits the gameplay.
I don't know where you're pulling this "theming" out of, but man, if you can't appreciate her for being the "mildly incompetent gatekeeper/last boss before shit gets real" that she is, why even bother with Meirin? It's basically exactly as >>14384647 says
>>14520438
The star, her name, most of her attacks, dragons are symbols of authority if not outright in that position (remilia), higher level dragons are tied to bodies of water usually (the lake, the only known water body in gensokyo), her weather from hisoutensoku is a direct reference to the "Dragon gate" from chinese mythology. A good portion of dragons are capable of taking on a human shape as well.
>She's not a self employed, most-ancient-youkai-dragon, but a gatekeeper. And if I recall correctly, canon sources tell us that she's pretty incompetent in that job, prefer to read comics, nap while on duty.
And this all can be explained away as her just doing what she wants.
I'm not saying its definitive, but ignoring it all is ignoring pretty much any information about chinese dragons.
>>14520449
To you, she just acts the small fry?
Would it not be seemingly that, even if she were a dragon, she still sits pretty low on the chain?
When individuals have such high level control, such as Remilia over fate, could she possibly not still be "fairly low" in the grand rank of things?
Does being, either a chinese girl or dragon, prove any indication of "power"? Would either status even matter, in a world where power is maintained by the general disbelief of it?
Selon moi, all trains of thought (mine included) seem only like an attempt to justify or reconcile one's personal canon, particularly when making speculation on such hints of evidence. Isn't enough that Hong Meiling existsin our hearts?
>>14520477
For most of that, i would say that being a dragon would set her at mid tier, if nothing else. Higher than the average mook, not a full on authority like remi. Thats actually what i was just thinking. Most people assume that meiling being a dragon automatically makes her a dragon god in these arguments. Hyperbole at its best. Being a dragon, however, does permit for a certain minimum level. Especially if she's the type that went through the dragon gate since that shows a great degree of willpower. All assuming she's a dragon of course.
My train of thought is that her situation is somewhat similar to sakuya's. We don't know shit about either, really. Only how they interact with the rest of the SDM crew. Perhaps meiling has something to hide, or simply doesn't want to show a full display of being a dragon. For all we know, sakuya could be lunarian and we let that slide, but as soon as someone mentions that meiling might be an actual dragon, people lose their minds. Its a bit of a double standard, really.
Honestly, most of the time i argue this its as devils advocate. I don't particularly care either way. I respect meiling for her abilities as is, not some theoretical dragon power. I just don't like to see people outright deny the possibility, simply on basis of what she did in EoSD. I mean, yuyuko was a stage 1 boss, that doesn't determine her power though, right?
>>14520503
>It would set her mid-tier
As was said, she's a 3rd stage boss. The most mid-tier, definitely not a mook, as a boss, by definition. Moreover, she pertains to the plot as she appears in EoSD; not just a passerby, like Lumia or Chirno.
>Outright deny
But he didn't; he said "fairly" low. All my point, is why even argue over what falls entirely into speculation, semantic andliterally secondaryfan-canon. Why play
>the devil's argument
?
Should your apreciation of Meiling be limited by an apparently reductionist comment of being lowly "on the food chain"?
Just take it easy,
>>14520349
She isnt a dragon though.
>>14520438
>And if I recall correctly, canon sources tell us that she's pretty incompetent in that job, prefer to read comics, nap while on duty.
Back this up, becuase htats bullshit memes. hong does her job fine. I would also argue she isnt low on the food chain, her power is manipulation of life energy. Thats pretty damn useful/dangerous.
>she's a 3rd stage boss
Someone has to be, that doesnt reflect their power level.Yuugi's power is ambiguous but she's considered a strong youkai, despite being onyl stage 3.
>>14520449
Have you considered it's more to do with dragons being a symbol of China? I mena to most people you have "dragons" and "chinese dragons" as a distinct type.
It's jsut going with the chinese theme.
>And this all can be explained away as her just doing what she wants.
She wants to fight a catfish, why is she guarding gates?
When is Zun going to make her fishing game?
>>14520477
>Remilia over fate
Dont believe her lies. Flan called it bullshit, Remi lost to Reimu, and if she could manipulate fate, why didnt she change Flan's to the point where Flan gets cured and becomes a nomal person like Remilia?
Simple, Remi cant change fate. She just says "All according to my plan" when shit happens, and hopes people buy her bluff.
Now stop arguing and post more Meiling in CHinese clothes.
>>14520533
>As was said, she's a 3rd stage boss
See yuyuko
And if either of the fightan are anything to go by, she's perfectly capable of holding her own against people of a higher stage value. Mid tier is a bit higher then you are giving her credit, since half the cast are outright cheaters.Besides, my appreciation of meiling is the same, dragon or not. I respect her ability to hold her own, despite hiding her true nature, not because of it.
Also
>why even argue over what falls entirely into speculation, semantic and literally secondary
I suppose no one should talk about anything ever then? This is the most redundant and retarded statement to make in an argument or debate. It can be applied to literally anything, and still mean next to nothing. Arguing carries value in and of itself. It can uncover facets of things you were never aware of, or reinforce your own beliefs. Its the same thing as asking why a martial artist seeks out others of similar or greater skill. The answer is the same either way. To better oneself, and hopefully others in the process.
also, the other guy did outright deny that meiling is a dragon, and even brought into question most of her theming.
>>14520565
>3rd Stage boss
I was agreeing with your own placement of her power "minimum"
>argue over anything
No, I was referring to fanon. That which is not explicitly in-canon game or print.
I understand where it might have been misconstrued to be against arguement, but here, I was strictly referring to non-canon extrapolation
At that point, we might as well be speaking of Meiling babysitting Flandre and raising baby-Sakuya.
>That guy
He said fairly low. The keyword is fairly; without a well defined power-ceiling, Meiling's presentation thus far has been not the highest, but certainly not the lowest. As with Yuyuko, and as >>14520561 points out with Yuugi, you have grounds to argue game-levels being inconsistent with canon power.
>>14520561
>Remilia over fate
Even if they are lies, I was just trying to find an example of the level of control various beings have. Replace with Yukarin and gaps, or Sakuya's watch and time, etc.
>bullshit memes
I stand correctly called out.
>>14520590
By "the other guy", i meant >>14520438, and more recently >>14520561
As for fanon, everything i've said is from the games or books. How people interpret those things is up to them, but the theming i brought up isn't something that can be considered "Fanon". some of it also wouldn't be consistent with a simply chinese "themed" youkai, like >>14520561 said. Her weather in soku especially.
>>14520590
>Replace with Yukarin and gaps, or Sakuya's watch and time, etc.
Now those I cant argue against. But I would say those are some of the top powers. Like 98% of othe stuff cant compete. The 1% being Reimu's invincible power to just phase out.
But there are lots of far less useful powers, and I would say Meiling is above average.
But it's a bit like Jojo powers, it's all about creativity. If used right a seemingly weak thing could be above average (survivor), while a strong thing can be utter shit if the writer wills it (Star Platinum and The Hand).
Allthough you would have to be a literal retard to not be godlike with Yukari's gap power.
>>14520602
I was that first other guy. At the time, I didn't understand what you were referring to by "theming"

The entire thing began with "Meiling is low on the fooodchain" and ended up with "No she's a dragon (one of the strongest thinks in the touhou universe) she's just hiding it, she's actually stronger than we think".
I would say it's a powerlevel argument.
I wish she would return in the games. I want more of her.
>>14520648
>>14520633
If it's not a powerlevel argument, I don't know what is
>>14520644
Maybe, but at this rate we will autosage with posts before images.
>>14520648
>>14384647
THIS is the comment that spiraled it into an argument over whether she was a dragon or not. Its heavily implied in the post that they don't believe that meiling is a dragon, let alone as powerful as some people would like. The "overembroidered" backstory would only refer fairly specifically to the dragon thing, as there isn't anything else for that to mean.
All i said was that there's enough evidence either way to outright discount either theory.
Besides, there being one dragon god in touhou does not equate to all of them being gods. Thats false equivalence.

It's like we don't have a boardexpressly for posting images of cute girls(j/k)
>>14520673
I regularly check /c/ and the girls I like are rarely posted.
When I actually made threads, they didnt get many posts and died. Meanwhile shows and girls I hate all have seemingly endless threads. /jp/ is a better source of cute touhou images than /c/.

Those boots dont work on her.
But what are those mace things, assuming you know?
>>14520689
Sorry friend, no clue
I will agree on the boots though, she's more suited to heels
>>14520686yeah, but it shouldn't be
>>14520689
Those are called "Chui". Which is just the chinese word for "Hammer/mace"
i don't have a lot of meiling stuff, so here's youmu Vs meiling
Does she actually know Kung Fu, or just Tai Chi?
>>14520706
Tai chi is only one specific sect of chinese martial arts.
I'd be willing to bet she knows several others. I have no proof for that however, so take it as you will.
>>14520700
I thought it was a mace, but it looked too big.
>>14520726
Its a mace type specific to china.
They used to be large metal balls, not hollow, so most martial arts avoided their use due to the insane strength needed to use them.
For another good example, shampoo from ranma 1/2 also uses them.
>>14520736
>not hollow
That's pretty hardcore
>>14520742
Indeed. Like i said, they were generally avoided. Some arts used them, and still have forms for them to this day, but they use hollowed out versions instead.
>>14520749
Sounds inconvenient. Warhammers were small and hit hard, which sound superior imo.
>Hollowed out versions
Atleast it would make a nice sound if you hit someone I guess.
What the fuck is jaoooo?
>>14520785
Not completely hollowed out. Just enough to make them usable. Think of it like a couple welded together cast iron skillets. Still pretty hefty, despite not being solid.
As for jao, i'll be honest, i'm not sure. Its a sound attributed to meiling, most commonly when she does her sky dragon kick. I dunno where it originated though.
>>14520799
Damnit! i keep forgetting to attach pictures. I'm a bit too tired for this.
>>14520803
Clothing swaps are popular. Junko's stuff looks kinda Chinese. I wonder if there will be art of her and Meiling swapping clothes.
>>14520817
I know even less about that than i do about JAOOO.
Its a possibility though.
It's disturbing how nice and kind Meiling is.
She's a youkai, so she still eats people. Especially given the SDM provides her with food.
>>14520866
>still eats people
Not necessarily. Not all youkai eat people, and even then its not guarantee'd that all SDM residents do either. Patchy doesn't need to eat at all for example.
>>14520785
Translate it weebs.
Here anons, have some china booty to calm down this power level flame war
China's big, smelly, cute feet!
Live!
>>14520877
If i recall, in TH06 she said that eating Reimu was okay for her.

This would never happen.
I dont see Hong ever doing that.
>>14536647
This wouldnt happen if Nazzy learned some humility.
>>14522740
Her name is Meiling! And her feet smell divine!
There's just something about this character.
>>14537156
No, they are tired and smelly! But I would rub them for her!
