He got the writers from Rewrite to work with him.
He likely already wrote the outline and wanted to write it himself and publish it by the end of 2014. However, he was severely overworked.
Back in November 2013, he was sick with the dreaded cold and couldn't work. This pushed back the release of the final season of RGD by a few weeks. And it also made him rush the ending of the story.
He was also working on Sui, his other horror love story romance for two years as well as trying to write TRI by the end of 2014. It was too much for him so he said in the 2014 October Party that he would only release one title a year.
TRI is going to be three stories which are connected somehow, where you can hop from one story to another whenever you want. All of the stories will be related somehow by the theme or something else. That loli doll seems to be a united factor.
The three stories are highschoolers going on a field trip to a rual place. A sci-fi war in space, on a colony with the war taking interest on that planet colony. And an Alice in Wonderland story.
That's basically all I know of the project and what Ryukishi has been working on.

The details and colors are done in a way that makes them look like shined statues instead of organic beings, which I really can't get into. The sharp edges and lolified characters actually do make it more difficult for me to feel the experience of the originals when there's such a noticeable difference - case in point, the inorganic feel I noted before (the sharp chins and such add to this) and their butchering of Bernkastel and Dlanor. The expressions seem way too forced in the PS3 art than needed as well, while the originals capture the emotions being portrayed in a way that doesn't contrast with the rest of the art or overemphasize itself. I've been playing this recently with a voice patch and I was wondering if it was intentional that only about half of the cast are actually voiced. Or if i just have a bad copy/patch.
None of the Servants or Maria or Beatrice actually speak, but everyone else does.

Higanbana is a collection of short stories taking place in an elementary school involving youkai, bullying, suicide, depression, blackmail, etc. It's rather good overall. Actress girl has one of Ryukishi's best twist he's ever done and along with Running Girl, it's one of his best stories he's written.
Rose Gun Days is rather good but very linear. It's as if he went on the internet, saw people talk shit about how he could only trick people with the unreliable narrator and decided to write a simple story.
It's basically a cross between Bebop + Baccano + Moulin Rouge.
At first, RGD is very slow and you get the impression that it's his worst work until you get to the mid point of ep 1, after the first mini-boss gets defeated and the first real villain shows up. After that, it's a great read until the end.
The problem of RGD is that it's so linear that it doesn't spend enough time on its character, some are outright ignored and wasted past ep 1. But the true gold of RGD are the villain. The villains are the true reason to read this. They're so good. Wang and Gabriel are some of the best villains Ryukishi has ever made, it's great.
Another problem of RGD is the ending. It's rushed to shit. Ryukishi got sick back in November 2013 or so with the dreaded cold and couldn't write for about two weeks or so. This forced RGD Last Season to be released after Comitek but you can feel that the entire ending was reeeallly pushed out as fast as possible. There's a huge great final showdown, key members and fighters are there and aren't given a resolution. For example, there's a fight between two of the best knife welder and it's hype but he never shows the fight and neither win. It's bullshit.
Still, RGD Season 3 is up there with Ryukishi's best work such as Higurashi ep 6 and Umineko ep 5. Worth the read.
Trianthology sounds like something Ruykishi thought he might have been able to write on his own but getting sick made him realize he's pushing himself too far, so he asked for help. Hilariously, TRI was supposed to be released in Winter 2014. He probably already wrote the outline and got his friend writers from Rewrite to help out. It looks like an interesting postmodern experimental work, being able to hop between three stories to grasp themes. We'll see how it goes.

And RGD is insanely anti-nationalistic. The best characters are the Chinese, which is interesting considering how much you hear nips making Chinese being shits and whatnot. Here, they get a very good treatment.

Higanbana Tthe First Night is full on beautiful and choke-full of twists all around. It's very dark, but amongst the best stories Ryukishi has ever written. It reads like a very good novella collection exploring the darkness of the human condition.
The Second Night is much, much less good. Exception taken of Running Girl, which is absolutely beautiful, the Second Night was heavily reworked because the First Night never sold much, on account of being too dark. The Second Night reads like a Touhou SoL doujin. Not a bad one, though, if that is your thing.Ever noticed that when Higanbana appears, she usually appears sitting in an elevated position, just like her doll is in the infirmary?

I very much agree with Second Night. The problem with Ryukishi is that he's insanely sadistic but he's also too optimistic for his own good. First Night was dark with a small hope of optimism. In Second Night, there's wayyy too much optimistic.
A good example is that short story about the eyepatch girl losing her best friend and summoning a demon to resurrect her friend's soul into a teddy bear. That story, besides Running girl, is probably my favorite in Second Night. Everything from the eyepatch girl losing the will to live, the demon asking a banal exchange such as your 'hello' words to the friend going apeshit that she's been awoken.
I actually tried not saying 'hello' and 'goodbye' to people for a whole week. It's completely depressing. You become a robot who only wants things and ignore people. A truly horrible life. Plus, her friend, having her soul inside a teddy bear for all of eternity would have been the worst.
In that story, the eyepatch girl should have been fucked. She agreed to the exchange, got her friend back and her friend told her that she never liked her. The devil should have never felt pity for her. It should have accepted the deal, laughed at the eyepatch girl and both girls would have been miserable for the rest of their life. Instead, the devil felt pity and Ryukishi got to be optimistic about people moving on.
I felt a bit cheated. It would have been better to end with the girls being fucked but it's uplifting for the girl to understand to move on with her life. Meh, whatever.
Second Night was too optimistic.
That problem appears again with Rose Guns Days. Everyone should have died yet Ryukishi made it so that more than half the cast survived. That's just poor.

It took a while for me to notice that.
Something like a dozen time in the First Night alone, she is presented as sitting on fences, doors, roofs, and looking down on people while talking to them. It is subtle - Ryukishi doesn't really put the focus in it. it's just here, her default position every time she appears. I thought it was really cool when I connected the dots with the position of her physical vessel in the infirmary.
There is a lot of small things that I caught on rereading. Like the epilogue of the story with the bunny killer: she says an awfully ambiguous sentence that can be either interpreted as a rhetorical question or 'poor thing shouldn't have insulted my friend Marie'. And then little things suddenly make sense. By instance, a little back, when she asks of the killer to whom he is apologizing, I had thought she meant he should apologize to the people he killed, but she probably meant he should apologize to Marie.

It wasn't a willing decision from Ryukishi. I think he really put a part of himself in the First Night, and he was really disappointed when it didn't work. After Umineko and the way he lost touch with a part of his fanbase, he really wanted to return to its root and do something popular. The Second Night is an almost desperate reaction to the fact that the First Night simply was not as popular as (I think) it should. He allowed himself to bride himself and his creativity for his fans.
